Azure Security: AZ-500 (Udemy.com)

Update April 2025

Created by: Kevin Brown

Last updated January 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 2,400 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

Kevin Brown's AZ-500 course is about 12 hours and 116 lectures on Azure security, taught mostly by clicking through the portal rather than showing slides. Brown has been a Microsoft Certified Trainer since 2000, and his bio says he wants every concept demonstrated. It assumes you already know Azure. The requirements list a year of experience and the Azure Administrator course first. Sections run from Entra ID, PIM and Key Vault through Azure Firewall, Defender for Cloud and Sentinel.

Reviewers praise the clear explanations and the demos, and one says they are handy to go back to. The ratings lean strongly positive, with 1,337 five-star and 850 four-star votes out of 2,400. The complaints are consistent, though. Some say parts are outdated, and one reviewer in late 2023 noted the videos go back to 2020, before the 2024 Entra ID refresh the description lists. Others say it is too shallow for the exam: no Azure CLI, no quizzes, and one reviewer says it misses about half of what the practice test asked. One mentions background noise.

The last update was January 2026, so the newer Entra ID material is there, but expect some older screens in the rest. Treat it as a hands-on foundation. Add practice tests and a deeper exam-focused course afterward, such as the Alan Rodrigues course one reviewer prefers. For working Azure admins who want to see the security tools actually configured, it is a solid start. As a sole route to the certificate, reviewers say it falls short.

Best forAzure admins who learn by watching every setting clicked through, and want a first pass at the AZ-500 topics.
Skip it ifYou want one course to pass AZ-500, with quizzes, practice tests and Azure CLI work.

Pros

  • Nearly every topic is a portal demo, so viewers see the settings configured, not just described
  • The Entra ID, Conditional Access and Azure Firewall lectures were redone after the Azure AD rename
  • Taught by a Microsoft trainer since 2000, and reviewers call the explanations clear and engaging
  • Covers a wide span in about 12 hours: PIM, Key Vault, WAF, Defender for Cloud and Sentinel

Cons

  • No quizzes or practice tests, and some reviewers say exam depth falls short, with no Azure CLI work
  • Reviewers flag older demos and outdated sections, and one hears background noise in the audio
  • Assumes a year of Azure experience and the Azure Administrator course first, so it is not for newcomers
A well structured course with a lot of practical showcase than just slides. It is not a one shot course to clearing the exam but it's a solid start to anyone preparing for the exam.

Instructor Details

Kevin Brown

I have been in the technology field for more than 20 years.  I have been a high performing Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) since 2000 and a Cisco Certified Systems Instructor since 2006.  I began my career in telecommunications more than 20 years ago.  Since then I have worked as a Systems Admin, Network Admin, System integrator, Solutions Architect, and CTO. My courses are not presentations that rely on slides to explain concepts.  My goal is to demonstrate every concept covered, instead of using slides that cover theory, we will use the interface to configure every setting that is discussed.  In my view, if you do not know how to complete a task that a course covered, that course was not beneficial.  I will make sure that you know how to complete each task and the various configurations for those tasks.

This course has been an excellent learning experience so far. The concepts are explained clearly with practical examples, which makes understanding Azure Security much easier. It is well-structured and aligned with the AZ-500 exam objectives. The hands-on demonstrations and real-world scenarios are especially helpful. It is definitely a good match for anyone preparing for the AZ-500 certification or working in Azure security roles. Highly recommended!

By Salam Altameemi on 2/18/2024

Kevin is the best. I obtained three certificates by watching his videos and am currently working on AZ-104 and AZ-500. I keep asking Kevin questions, and he always responds and helps with my inquiries. Also, as a non-native English speaker, I can understand him clearly.

By Jesse Allen on 1/19/2024

The material is great and organized well. The instructors annunciation is great so the material is easy to follow. It was great on a computer but if I played it on the mobile device, some items was hard to view. Casting it to a large screen solved that.

By Sourish Das on 7/23/2023

The course captures in depth the important concepts pertaining to the AZ-500 exam. However, the course structure can be improved by including a summary lecture after every section and a short quiz after every sub-sections and a main quiz like a mock exam. This would help students who are also working and have less time to prepare.

Overall it is a great course for people looking to get an introduction for the security aspects in Azure, however based on the practice exams I took for AZ500, there is not necessarily enough depth in calling out what aspects are important for the certification

This class was awesome, the teacher is very knowledgeable, experienced and skilled. Before watching this course my Azure security knowledge was very minimum , however after completing the course my skills definitely improved. I highly recommend this teacher to anyone who want to learn/master azure security. Thank you Yero

Kevin did an amazing job of going through the material. I liked the way he mostly worked on the platform to show us how to configure the settings. This approach is extremely helpful in learning quickly. Additionally, he used scenarios that put the capabilities in context to understand the applicability. I'm a security professional with over 13 years experience. I have taken several courses. This is probably the best one.

By Mack Marchand on 12/30/2021

The exam material has changed and much of the lessons are no longer being tested on. In addition, many of the new test features are not covered at all. This material is dated. I enjoy the hands on approach but this material is far from adequate study material for the exam. I've taken 5 microsoft exams before and will have to find another lesson now.

By Carla Jenkins on 4/25/2021

This course is compact and helpful. It gets straight to the point and delivers. Having received my AZ-900, DP-900, AI-900 and AZ-104, I am well-versed in Azure; but, this course truly has filled in so many knowledge gaps as it pertains to Microsoft Azure in general and Azure Security in particular. Some examples are dynamic vs. assigned users, Azure Identity Protection, Azure Sentinel and conditional access. I also like when you do the labs and connect all of the concepts together. Thanks for creating this course.

By Matt T on 8/5/2020

I've taken many of Kevin's courses. His approach to teaching is methodical and very well presented. Most important of all is that he demonstrates all his theory in labs. Kevin's communication skills are amazing. Many instructors on Udemy are almost impossible to understand and makes learning difficult and extremely challenging. Communication is so important to have an effective learning experience. Highly recommend Kevin and his courses.
