This isn't a course for someone new to programming or Scala. Most other resources I found for Scala take a kitchen sink approach, I felt overwhelmed. This video helped clear up some issues I had with the language and gave me some new focus. Wish some other things were covered instead of Akka. Mark (the instructor) has great pace to voice and gives enough information without overload. But, again, you need to have some programming or prev. Scala experience. For tooling/IDE, the Eclipse Scala IDE afaik is deprecated. Intellij workbook just gave me headaches and I can't get VS Code to work in Scala. If like me, just use the Scala REPL for code samples.

Very interesting course, the later sections were great for getting a better understanding of the uses of Scala. However, I feel like some of the topics should have been covered in greater detail. For example mutable versus immutable arrays and how you can change values of immutable arrays. Or more detail in creating maps from lists and the differences there in mutability. Also some suggested exercises to try on your own with code solutions to look up later would have been extremely helpful.

Please mention a Prerequisite in your description. Looks like this course is more for a java/C/C++ back group people. I am a Beginner and was trying to understand scala in detail. Functional part is ok but once the object oriented concepts have started i completely lost track . Please mention a Perquisite for the course as you need java background. Thanks, Sree

One of the absolutely best online programming courses I've ever viewed (over 15 plus online programming courses to date) The instructor is a master at presenting the material ! The AKKA lessons and the use of Actor for multi threading is critical knowledge for any programmer wanting to develop in the Scala language. Five Star Instructor and a Five Star Class!

Some sections need improvement. Specially the parser section : It is really difficult to follow and needs better explanation. I personally think, instead of explaining pre-written code, it is better to add code as the explanation progresses. The mud example needs a little more explanation : both the simple one and the AKKA one. Object Orientation needs more explanation : 1. What is difference between class and case class . why should we use it? 2. Inheritance. 3. variable scoping - e.g. private[package.name]

This class is one of the most detailed I have seen on the Scala language. I have been using Scala for many years now and I am still learning the internals of the language and once in a while I go back to a good refresher. This is the best so far. Thanks.

It's not a course to learn to program in Scale. It's a course to get an overview as to what is in Scala. Was useful in that sense but for someone that wants to learn Scala, you need a different course.

Section 2 was extremely helpful and was a great introduction to the language. After that the course doesn't keep up with where the language is now. I've spent just about as much time outside of the course trying to find the right imports as I have in the course learning the language. This is extremely frustrating as some of the included packages for scala are no longer there, e.g. XML is no longer standard there's a whole section that deals with it (maybe update that with JSON, a bit more relevant these days), Akka the ask method isn't in the recommended imports, currently hunting for that now. Also after Section 2 you no longer work with the teacher as much. It's more based around "Look at this code that I wrote, it does this." It should be more centered around the student typing with the teacher. It's a shame this course turns into this, because it starts off so strong. It would be great as a free course, but I don't like the idea of paying to learn something and then spending just as much time outside the course to learn it because the course is outdated.

The way the course was laid out and edited showed the large amount of time that was put into it. As a Java developer wanting to learn more about Scala, this really gave me a great overview of the various Scala idiosyncrasies. The discussion on akka and using it with the example project really helped to solidify the notion of reactive, parallel and functional programming.

This tutorial start off by showing you some of the language basics and you can work along with Scala Worksheets and see things working yourself. But when you get to Section 3 the instructor has applications already built and kind of just walks you through the code. It would have been nice to work through building some of those things from scratch, rather than just seeing completed code. Overall this course suffers from the same thing a lot of other courses do, which is the assumption that as someone wanting to learn Scala you are probably an experienced Java dev. While I understand the tie between the two, I wish more care would have been taken to cover some of the things that someone who has no Java experience might not know.
