Building Perceptive AI in Unreal Engine (Udemy.com)
AI Perception, Behaviour Trees, and EQS
Created by: Daniel Orchard
Last updated October 2020
What you will learn
- In this series we will be learning how to implement a perceptive AI solution where the AI will sense you via sight and hearing
- We will also look at how to setup behavour trees and blackboard to react to the player, with shooting mechanics and ability activations
- We will be using blueprint throughout, and no C++ will be required to make this work

Course Description
In this series I will be showing how to set up two different AI designs, one for a shooter experience, and one for a RPG style AI. We will cover blackboard and behaviour trees, EQS queries, and the AI perception component using sight, sound and damage stimuli.
The Shooter example will be a longer, slower example where we will explain everything as we go, and it will use sight and sound to give it elements of stealth AI, along with a working shooting system driven by the AI controller and it's behaviour tree.
The Magic AI example will be a more concise, straight to the point demonstration of a different way of working compared to the shooter example, and we will utilise sight and damage stimuli to make a reactionary AI who is able to heal, cast spells, and teleport away from the user using a EQS query. This series also includes a large overview of the EQS system and how to many of the tests work.

Im Daniel, I have been working with the Unreal Engine for almost 12 years now, and spent the majority of that employed as a Unreal Technical Director, working with the Film Industry. I have also worked on a number of games, arch-vis, VR and AR projects, and various other mediums. I love to teach and share what I have learned, and help developers who may be experience the problems I also went through.

Pretty informative, but definitely for an advanced user. A bit chaotic at times. I didn't like two things in particular: 1) Stuff like setting up something way in advance. "Do that, don't ask questions, we will be using it after 5 hours". I definitely prefer more iterative approach. 2) For a cleaner project I'd rather see simple rectangle gliding with exclamation marks, rather than devote a lot of time into animation, movement, health systems, physics etc.

It's definitely a good course, and I encountered minimal compatibility issues using Unreal Engine 5.2, even though the instructions were done in UE 4. The only thing holding this course back I think is that you really have to pay sharp attention to everything the instructor is doing, as he does move fairly quickly, and sometimes will click or modify certain things without verbalising the changes as he's doing them. So if you aren't watching him closely, you may not be aware he's changed something. Other than that it's quite good, although I would recommend that for absolute beginners, they get a basic understanding of Unreal Engine AI from free YouTube videos before doing this course, as you will struggle to understand everything if you are coming into this course without any prior knowledge.

Author moves VERY quickly, meaning I was constantly having to pause, catch up, unpause, scramble to work, rinse and repeat. He also made a lot of mistakes in the videos, so add that on top of needing to pause constantly, and I found the course very frustrating. There is still some good information, so it isn't a total wash, but the quality of the course could be much higher. Ok course to get an elementary understanding of UE5 AI.

Good course some areas challenged me in the sense that it lacked some guidance in particular the rpg tutorial on creating the abilities. He moves at speed so I ended up having to pause and rewind multiple times and felt that in some places i was busy catching up on what he just did or said rather than learning it. I did feel like it could of done with a little more polishing and edit review to make it a more enjoyable experience. but found it very insightful and to say i didn't learn anything would be untrue, so well done on a good course and thank you

Its more then just another tutorial which seem to find their way onto udemy more and more these days. He shows you his code and walks you through creating it step by step and explains the theory behind it. Starting this year (2021) I'm new to Unreal and AI with no prior Game engine experience and I'm following along just fine.

Great, very focused course. The only thing that bothered me is not so hot coding style, as with the all-encompassing blueprint interface, and message passing. Proper AI logic architecture could be a valuable thing to learn. I really hope we'll see more of your courses, especially one focused on advanced animation blueprints!

This course not unreal beginner course. In fact you need to have a good background in Unreal. The description is misleading. I know Unreal well so it was okey for me. Only the AI part is somewhat beginner friendly. Even in AI parts after a moment you just follow him does stuff without understanding it because he just does stuff and mumbles words. Yeah in this course he mumbles a lot and speaks way too fast. I had to rewatch a lot.

Very informative, aimed at explaining how Behaviour Trees and EQS work and it succeeds at that. The only comment I have is about the end result of the RPG AI. I have learned a lot but what I end up with is underwhelming. The tweaking the instructor does off-camera should be covered so that in the end I get the same as I see in the video. Apart from that, it's not an easy topic to explain and the instructor does it pretty clearly in a concise manner. Recommended!

The good: The instructor clearly has a lot of experience and this course delivers on what was promised, building perceptive AIs. You learn to implement a Shooter AI and a RPG AI and you definitely learn useful things. Bonus, you sometimes get random neat info (like debugging, UI animations, sneak peek at other already implemented systems). The not so good: if you're planning on also following and implementing the same thing as the instructor (not just watching the lectures), you will often need to pause and replay some sections multiple times, as there are moments when everything seems too spontaneous and fast. I feel like sometimes there is a lack of planning before the recording on what the sections should contain and how to do it. While I have some experience with UE4 myself, I found the second part (RPG AI) simple and easy to follow, but in the first part (Shooter AI) there's definitely a lot going on in a very short timeframe. And probably the most annoying thing, for me at last, is that sometimes new blueprints and code pop up between lectures because stuff gets re-recorded, or not very well explained modifications are made off-screen. These things breaks the flow, if you're trying to follow and do your own implementation.

Very impressive course... Totally explained as it was easy to learn for a starter, specially considering the velocity of instructing toggled between a full hand of tabs that are are easily mixed up by what is left by our limited senses. After all, two are being used to listen and seeing by default. Therefore, we can consider a course for more advanced users and not with some few UE4 knowledge. For the purpose inquestion, once that we can consider unproper the application of AI without proper emotions and reactions, the course is lacking on a more effective explanation of how to exactly blend animations, being doomed to not clear, imaginary scenarios. Yet (so far), we can gather very useful and elucidative know-how concerning capacities of the BT system if intended to generate options determined by specific action queries... Not having much intelligent results than what is defined by the author. Still to know more regarding perceptorial A.I., after all... And what might bring to the machine learning process. Justifying why cannot attribute a 5 star appreciation more in conformity with the instructor motivation and evident mastering.
