Our take

Based on the ratings of 3,358 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is Rick Crisci's course for the VMware VCP-DCV exam, code 2V0-21.20, built around vSphere 7. It runs 13.4 hours across 107 lectures and 12 sections. Networking and storage are the biggest blocks, at roughly three hours each, followed by DRS, upgrades, security and a short Kubernetes section. It assumes you already know the basics and builds on his separate Foundations course, so the real audience is people who already touch vSphere at work.

Students like the teaching. Reviewers call the explanations clear and easy to follow, and one says the networking lectures helped them understand switches and vNICs. Roughly nine in ten of the 3,358 ratings are four or five stars. The complaints are about structure and exam coverage. One three-star reviewer doubts they could pass after finishing and dislikes being sent back to the Foundations course. Another says it jumps between topics, going deep in some places and skimming in others, and one found the Kubernetes section confusing. Single reviewers also mention missing handouts and video that isn't 1080p.

The course was last updated in September 2024, and the description says the demos run on vSphere 6.7, not 7. There are no quizzes or practice tests, and the exam it targets is the 2021 one, so check that it matches the exam you are booking. We'd treat it as a good main video series for experienced admins, paired with Foundations, VMware's own documentation and a source of practice questions.

Best forWorking vSphere admins who finished Rick's Foundations course and want a video walkthrough of the VCP-DCV topics.
Skip it ifYou are new to vSphere, or want practice questions and one course that covers the whole exam on its own.

Pros

  • Rick's explanations are called clear and crisp, and reviewers rate his presentation and demos highly
  • Networking section gets specific praise for explaining switches and vNICs and how they talk to each other
  • Broad VCP-DCV coverage: storage, security, DRS, HA, upgrades and a Kubernetes section
  • Short lectures, mostly 5 to 15 minutes, with over 50 live demos in the vSphere Client

Cons

  • One reviewer says it isn't enough to pass the exam and keeps pointing back to the Foundations course
  • Reviewers call the structure jumpy, with some topics deep and others skimmed, plus bloat in places
  • No quizzes or practice tests; demos run on vSphere 6.7, and the Kubernetes lectures confuse some
Rick is an amazing tutor, his explanation is clear and crisp. If you concentrate well, you will understand the concepts well.

Listed as intermediate. It expects solid vSphere Foundations knowledge, so it suits current admins, not people starting out.

great. local storage under raid installed with esxi OS is treated much different than other storage . I ALWAYS build my esxi hosts with separate RAID configs and then ADD another RAID group in BIOS to allow sys admins to see the new larger storage group

I am on Simple VMware vSphere 7 Professional training and I am hearing and reading a lot of vSphere 6 instead vSphere 7, I hope the intention is for the version 7 since it is what I am planning to get certified. Thanks

By Roger Laboy on 5/18/2022

This is a great class, he goes through every topic important to the VCP in great detail. Make sure you pay attention to everything he is saying. He helped me pass VCP6.7 two years ago and now VCP7. Thank you Rick!!

Course was very informative and a learned a ton, but I often had to stop the videos to Google terms I wasn't familiar with and read up on them just to understand certain lessons. Also, several videos reference documents and the links are not provided in the lessons. I had to Google these as well. All in all a good course, but took a look longer to complete than the 13 hours to do my own complimentary research.

By Enielson DaSilva on 3/21/2022

I did have time to complete this training 100%. I did about 77% and combine with another small training it was enough to assist me in getting my VCP 2022. Thank you, Rick Crisci. Great Training.

By Dean Rellland on 2/19/2022

I appreciate the training. You speak clearly and relay the subject material in a way that keeps me engaged. Thank you! Clear, concise and engaging walkthrough/lessons. I appreciate your thoroughness!

By Michael Russcher on 2/2/2022

I wish the sections of this training corresponded to the sections in the study guide for this test. Also, I've heard him mention vSphere 6 so I think this training has just been brought over from 6 to 7. It would have been nice if all of this was covered in the Introduction along with an explanation as to the reasoning for all this. Otherwise the training seems to be alright.

Summary. There is a large amount of topics covered in this course. Ricks style, presentation and demo's are high quality. However, do I think after completing the course I could take the exam and pass. No i don't. I would have expected more, reference to "this may be an exam question" or "review this area in depth". Too many times it refers to the fundamental course, I would have expected if it was to be on the exam to be covered under this course, even just at a high level recap. I should not have to purchase 2 courses. Will I buy another one of Ricks courses for exam prep. Maybe, but I would consider other courses first. Average, could be better.

This course make me clear and helped me to combine in common all knowledge about VMware Vsphere. And fortunately it was my painkiller during my Covid illness period. Thank you Rick for your very good and clear English. Looking for more advanced course for high load with some troubleshooting. And don't forget to update this course with new info

By Phillip Zissimou on 11/4/2021

Course coverage was great, also like the demo videos and diagrams. I personally felt some areas could have been better explained (e.g. Tanzu, Storage). I also felt the course could have been made better by the inclusion of end of module quizes and maybe even a video to talk about what to expect in the exam.
