Our take
Based on the ratings of 5,368 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in July 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
Matthew Falconer is a working colorist, and the course is built around jobs he was paid to grade. It runs about 34 hours across 137 lectures in DaVinci Resolve. The first half covers the conform, scopes, primary grades and a long block of secondaries. The back half is project work: a corporate video, a music video, a feature film scene and a full short film. The requirements ask for some video editing familiarity.
Reviewers mostly praise the teaching. They mention clear explanations at a followable pace, lessons split into digestible pieces, and good practice footage. One student found Blackmagic's free training too crammed and liked the slower approach here. Complaints are scattered. One reviewer says time goes on unimportant detail, another finds the videos dull, and an older review calls the picture soft on a 27 inch screen. The sharper ones: a one star says the download files do not match the footage in the lessons, and another waited a week for an answer on a RAW question. About 3 percent of ratings are one or two stars.
With 36,008 students and a 4.6 average from 5,368 ratings, it is a well-tested pick for Resolve grading, and it was last updated in July 2025. It is long and has no quizzes, so it suits people who learn by following along on real footage. Anyone after a quick tour of the color page should look for something shorter. For everyone else who edits and wants to grade properly, it is an easy recommendation, with the caveat to check the project files early.
Pros
- Four long project sections: corporate, music video, feature scene and a full short film
- Slow, clear explanations that reviewers say are easy to follow along with
- Covers conform, scopes, secondaries, node trees, LUTs and color management in one place
- Large, well-rated base: 4.6 from 5,368 ratings, refreshed in July 2025
Cons
- A couple of reviewers find the videos dull or padded with unimportant detail
- One reviewer says the download files do not match the lesson footage
- One reviewer's Blackmagic RAW question went unanswered by the instructor for a week
He explains in a very clear and understandable way at a pace I can follow.
Listed for all levels, but it assumes basic editing skills and some comfort with video software.

Course Description
Behind the Blackmagic
Color grading still enjoys an odd, almost mystical status among some filmmakers, but what if I told you that you can do it with software that you can get for free? Well, there's no magic (Blackmagic doesn't count) here, just hard graft and know-how. This course will take you from a standing start, right the way through to high-end and professional color grading using the excellent post-production solution; Da Vinci Resolve. The training material I'm providing comes from real-world projects where I was paid to provide my labor. I'm going to take you through how I approached each one of these projects to achieve professional results.
On this course, you will learn:
The full Da Vinci Resolve workflow, from receiving a project right through to final delivery
Primary grading tools which work on the entire image
Secondary grading tools which allow you to make highly accurate corrections to your image
Keying, tracking and rotoscoping in the color panel
The parallel and layer mixer nodes, and when to use them
Best practices for large and complex projects
Tips and tricks to deal with challenging footage
Da Vinci Resolve color management, including LUTs and camera RAW decoding
Da Vinci Resolve's OpenFX plugins, including the Beauty and film grain plugins
How to make your footage sing and deliver a project professionally, every time
And much, much more!
I'm now a Blackmagic Design certified trainer in Da Vinci Resolve, and I've been color grading professionally for over nine years. In that time I've produced work for brands such as Unilever, Greggs Bakery, TNT Logistics, Joules (a UK clothing line), the NHS, the BBC and Virgin Airlines. It doesn't stop there, either. I've delivered drama and factual work for broadcast and web, as well as feature films for international distribution.
Missing a mentor?
I'm bringing the benefit of my experience to this course because I know what it's like to have no-one to teach you. When I started to grade on my film course back in university, there were no tutors who could teach me to grade at all. I wound up spending long nights in the grading suite (some winter days I actually missed the sun completely) teaching myself to use Resolve from scratch. It paid off as I wound up delivering grading work for the BBC wildlife unit, on the project that became Life Stories, whilst still studying at university! But why was it like that? I still believe I'd be a lot better now if I'd had the right training earlier, all the harder to iron out bad habits when there's no-one around to call you out!
So this course is my attempt to provide that support and that training to as many people as possible, all for the price of a pizza (a heavily discounted pizza if it's a large one). If you want to learn how to finish your film projects to a higher standard, then come along as we cover Da Vinci Resolve in Depth in this course!

The color grading course far exceeded my expectations. It's well-priced for what it offers and includes valuable lessons on components and hardware, alongside the limitations of the free version of the software. The course clearly differentiates between what can be achieved with the free and paid versions of the program. Some concepts may seem confusing at first, but with a bit of research, they become understandable. The course brought back memories of my school days, with the professional and experienced instructor explaining everything clearly. He covers both the main tools used in his professional work and lesser-known ones, and the course is regularly updated, which is fantastic. Overall, it's an excellent package for the price, and even better if it's on sale. Kudos to the instructor for starting this ambitious yet well-executed project and sharing it with the world. Congratulations to everyone who has successfully completed the course. Patience is required, but the practical exercises are an excellent way to gain experience in DaVinci Resolve's color grading section. The course also covers basic professional video clip organization, different formats such as film, music videos, short films, commercials, and independent cinema. It explains the necessary hardware for each and their requirements, including effects and styles. Additionally, it guides you on finding your unique style during preproduction. Blessings and continued success.

Honestly speaking, I can't rate this so high because it's the only course I got on colour grading other than YouTube. You can learn all this from YouTube, but this course is beneficial as a course. What I mean is that this course compiles all the necessary information into one course. I've used YouTube for some time to learn, but all the information you need is scattered around and it just wastes quite a bit of time, you can definitely find a lot of good content for free but having a dedicated course is going to help save a lot of time. So I'm going to say that this was a great purchase.

I have paid for other color correction courses that cost much more than this and didn't cover anywhere near as much information as Matthew does. This course gives a solid foundation for serious students and is far superior to learning sporadically from YouTube videos. If you want to be able to earnestly present yourself as a professional colorist to clients, then I can't recommend this course to you enough. It is the most comprehensive and thorough course I have come across on Udemy yet. Thank you for putting in so much effort and creating such a high quality course, Matthew.

Came in not knowing anything about how to colour grade and am finishing feeling like I can now work my way around the colour suit with some much needed confidence. Gives a really good base for understanding how the science behind it works as well as giving some insights into the art of the grade. Really, really impressed with the professional nature of the course and how it assumes you don't have an understanding of grading from the beginning. It's really cool looking back to the first project to what I know now finishing the last one!

I used DaVinci Resolve before but only scratched the surface. The course is giving me an in-depth and better understanding of the software...thank you.

This is probably one of the best tutorials on Resolve on Udemy. On a serious note this is a very big deep dive into the inner workings of Resolve but even more so, it is more valuable for watching the tutor practise his colour grading techniques, which in turn you follow along with. To get the benefit you need to watch the videos particularly his process on first and second passes. You don't always need to grade everyshot, but I find it very helpful to do so if you want to retain the knowledge and techniques. Thank you for making this.

Couldn't recommend this more. The instructor has the rare gift of both knowing what he's talking about to an expert degree while being able to communicate that effectively and efficiently to a beginner, making complex things to get your head around digestible. Furthermore, there is a healthy amount of repetition throughout the course to allow the things taught to both develop and cement which is invaluable in any form of learning. There is a generous variety of different types of footage both in terms of creative and shooting format also. Lastly, I asked a question and got a prompt, detailed response which is all you could want from an online training resource. Outstanding course.

1st point - well worth the price. The instructor is quick and to the point. All the intro videos show only what you need and there is a lot. What I find most useful is that he grades actual projects. He gets into a rhythm that is easy to follow. I recommend watching, even when he is not speaking for long periods of time. Be observant on what is happening. There are lots of clips to play with and try your hand at grading. The course is created at increasing levels of complexity. At just past the half way point and I am finding many aspects of this course useful. I really enjoyed the practical projects. Some of the adjustments made were not obvious on my monitor, especially when denoise was being done. I was having a hard time figuring out why certain values were being chosen since I couldn't see their effect. Overall a great course.

An excellent course from every point of view. First of all, I emphasize the instructor shows an excellent personal quality, and an admirable professionalism. In this sense, you can clearly see a very skilled domain of DaVinci, and a way to explain the workflow of a professional step by step. Also, the order in which the course structure has been assembled is impeccable, both for the selection of the contents, the explanations of how the application works, how to use it professionally, and above all starting from the most basic, adding little difficulty to little, until reaching truly professional jobs. Congratulations Matthew!! Excellent work and a real pleasure study with you in this amazing Masterclass!!!
