Darktable Made Easy for Beginners | GIMP RAW Editing (Udemy.com)

So far the course has been helpful. A couple of years ago, I started watching a very in depth series of YouTube videos about darktable by Bruce Williams. I think his videos are very useful and still refer to them. I think the benefit of Chris Parker's course is that it's systematic and gives people an idea of what an image editing program is, as well as about the specifics of darktable.

This is a review after lesson 18. Mr. Parker is a really good instructor with a very pleasing voice, in my opinion. He gives some tips that I would not have picked up on my own. His talking speed is perfect for me, also. As I follow along using the provided images in my copy of Darktable, I'm learning a lot about the software. So far, I'm really glad that I signed up for his Darktable course. One caveat, though. He is using a version of Darktable that has since been updated after creating this course. So some explanations do not apply to the most current version. This is somewhat frustrating, but I'm not going to ding him a star because I think the instruction is otherwise excellent.

Clear and easy to understand. The course provides information on a wide range of skills and tools in darktable. I wish it was updated for the newer versions as many modules have changed and processing quality has greatly improved, eliminating or reducing many of the edits that were demonstrated.

Great and useful course! It covers all the basics that every Darktable beginner needs to know. The most common modules explained in detail and shown on the examples. Hope to see Darktable Advance course on Udemy from Mr. Parker in the near future. Strongly recommend this course.

There are useful tips but the course needs to be updated, many new features are not mentioned and some features are no more applicable, only a handful of modules are shown and it lacks examples and challenges compared to other courses. I will update the review if this course improves in future

Overall an excellent course. While I'll need to go back over it several times to get it clear in my head, this is not an adverse reflection on Chris's ability as an instructor. I find his style of presentation measured and methodical, giving quite complex info at a pace and in a manner that's easy to absorb. Having gone through the entire course once now I feel far more confident to tackle darktable head on. Keep up the great work Chris.

Improved my skills and confidence but was limited by the fact that the images didn't always match when loaded (presumably due to settings within the software). Also a few of the videos covered tools that no longer exist within Darktable making it difficult to follow along. I think more time at the start looking at settings would be helpful. Response to query was brilliant though and can't fault that. Also not everyone uses Windows or an Apple - had quite a few hoops to jump through to try and get compatible versions running in order to do it.

I took a photography class at the university last semester and I had a Lightroom license for free, then it ended when my class finished, so I started looking for options to Lightroom and found Darktable to be an excellent one. Then I came across this course and it taught me everything I needed to start editing again. This is an excellent choice to learn Darktable. Thanks Chris!

Chris is a very good teacher and as the title say it is the perfect course for beginner. I am now more confident to explore the software myself. However, after finishing the course I would love a part 2 for more advance feature. For example, the filmic and the new diffuse and sharpen module and a more in depth view on the parametric mask to only cite a few.

Darktable has been updated since this series was created. The update is substantial enough to be a nuisance if you want to follow along. Still, it's pretty easy to get the gist of things. The lessons towards the end where he walks you through a few "real life" edits is very good and you get to hear what he's thinking. The Quick Edits lecture at the beginning, especially since so much has changed, does more harm than good.
