I just finished chapter 3 so far. There are 2 aspects about this course that I don't like. 1 is that this course content is rather outdated(it's v3), given that v4 of d3.js has already been out for a while. It's annoying because v4 is quite different from v3(go google it and you will find out) so I have to pause the video sometimes and look up for v4 coding styles. 2 is that the instruction is too fast sometimes, I need to pause several times to think about the reasoning, something that I rarely have to do w/ other courses on Udemy. however, the plus side is that it covers the core aspects of d3.js and one can certainly use this course to understand the fundamentals of d3.js and that's very important.

Originally I thought that there was not enough course content. However, there was just enough to give me the foundation I need to edit existing d3 visualisations. I've made several visualisations for my work already. For each one, I've found something similar to what I want from bl.ocks.org and made adjustments where I needed to. The instructor speaks clearly with a calm tone. My only annoyance with this course was the sublime autocomplete used by the instructor. It was distracting at times to see quick flashes of predicted text as code was being written.

It is a good course ... but very OUTDATED ! You'll pull your hair off to understand the alternative for V4 version of D3. If you have already a good understanding of this kind of framework, it should be refreshing ... but if you are a beginner with D3 framework, it will be HARD to understand the mechanism with this course ! The author speaks well and try his best to give his knowledge, kuddos for this, that's why I give 4 stars.

January 2017: I do have a project with d3, this course was useful for my development, but I had o have to keep https://bl.ocks.org/ side by side with the course as the course uses version 3 of the d3 library which is old. The good thing about course that it helped to get the logic of d3. Also was surprised that the course had a section about how to use the browser and it's developer tool. Thought, this course for developers who are familiar with them. December 2017: Got a client who needs D3, so went through the course once again. Now I feel much more confident. Thank you.

The course moves extremely fast. Definitely could've used a much more in-depth look into the logic/reasoning in many of the projects. He lightly skims over essential concepts that are needed to use the library which is what I was hoping for through this course. While I understand it would've taken more time resulting in the cost being raised, I would've gladly paid a significant amount more if the information was there.

Great course which takes the learner from crawl to run. I am about 3/4ths done with the class and feel pretty comfortable that I can branch out into other basic charts. Would love follow on courses for some of the more advanced chart types including geospatial charts and nested charts (network graph with nodes that spawn bar charts). I dinged 1/2 a star since I like to annotate the code with notes explaining why things work the way they do and it would be nice if there was a just a bit more time between code completion and display so I could pause, reflect, and annotate with the source code still displayed on the screen. Really like the starter code which provides for a quicker ramp-up but still requires the learner to interact and write code.

I would say this is one of best tutorials I've enrolled. He goes over the fundamental of d3.js, as well as good practice to make your code re-usable for future implementations. Keep in note that version 4 recently came out and so some of the d3.js methods that are exposed here will not work. You will need to reference d3.js's documentation to see what has changed from version 3 to version 4. Aside from that, I'd recommend it anyone who wants to get their hands dirty on d3.js

The teacher speaks very clearly. Biggest, problem which is a HUGE hindrance is that the teacher doesn't properly show or explain how to load data, in the final video. So, right now, I'm done the class, and I can create charts in d3, but not by loading external data. I have to jump through hoops just to get started on my own project. The core material though is well delivered. Also, this class could benefit from some exercises.

The fact that the course covers how to make beautiful Bar, Line and Scatter charts is great. These are the most important chart types IMO. It would have been great to see more advanced graphics. There were parts of section 6 and 7 where I felt like the instructor moved too fast. I had to rewind several times to understand what was going on. The instructions were clear and concise. He coded using best-practices (I'm pretty sure I will be following his format from here on out for d3 charts). I would have loved to see a summary chapter on Best Practices -- like splitting sections into enter, update and exit phases. Also using generalized functions etc. Overall great course! I recommend it for those just starting to get comfortable with D3 (and those who may not have too much knowledge of JS, html and css).

D3 is complicated. The first time I watched these lectures it looked like magic was occurring, and I thought "I can't possibly follow all of this". After trying d3 projects on my own with examples from here and other online sources, I found myself going back to re-watcg these lectures to get a deeper understanding. Finally it has all "clicked" and I can now make real d3 projects that work as expected. I recommend watching these lectures, trying d3 on your own, and then re-watching these. Udemy has another d3 course from Packt which helps to solidify concepts but I recommend viewing this course first.
