Our take
Based on the ratings of 57,990 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in June 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short concept course, not a hands-on one. John Honai walks through the old way of building software, where it hurt, and how continuous integration, continuous delivery, continuous deployment and DevOps grew out of those problems. It is 13 lectures in a single section, about an hour, with no coding exercises or projects. Most of it is animations and cartoons, with a few plain bullet slides. The audience list is wide: beginners, developers who keep hearing the terms, managers whose teams are switching over, and architects new to the area.
Reviewers like how plain it is. The words that keep coming up are short, simple, precise and well structured, and a few say the visuals and the comparison with the old way of working made the ideas click. One person new to cloud operations said it sorted out the difference between CI/CD and pipelines. The complaints are fewer but pointed. One reviewer found the delivery like an old-school lecture, a static slide and a script read aloud. Another wanted tools named and explained, and one expected a more technical dive and called it generic.
Treat it as a primer, and a quick one. It was refreshed in June 2026, more than 160,000 students have taken it, and about 960 of roughly 58,000 ratings are one or two stars. The description itself says to move on to tool-specific courses afterward, which is sound advice. Anyone who already works with pipelines every day will probably find it thin. For everyone else, it is an easy hour that gives you the vocabulary.
Pros
- About an hour across 13 lectures, so it fits in one sitting
- Animations and cartoons carry most of it, and reviewers say that makes the ideas easy to follow
- Sets the old release cycle beside CI/CD, so the reason for each practice is clear
- Rated 4.5 across about 58,000 reviews, with under 2% at one or two stars
Cons
- Theory only: no coding exercises, no projects, no pipeline to build
- Does not name or demo tools, which some reviewers wanted to see
- Slide-and-script delivery feels dry to some, and one reviewer calls it generic
Really good overview. Good to learn the basics in just one hour. Thank you.
Beginner is accurate. It assumes only the basic software development lifecycle, with no coding or tool experience.
What you will learn
- Learn the basic concepts of Continuous Integration (CI), Continuous Delivery and Continuous Deployment (CD), and DevOps.
- Understand the pain points in the traditional Software Development Life Cycle which paved the way for CI / CD/ DevOps.
- Learn how business revenue and time-to-market are greatly improved by bringing in CI/CD/Devops.
- Learn how CI / CD / DevOps evolved step by step. This will help build a solid foundation to learn more about the implementation part and the tools involved.
- Learn using illustrations, animations and cartoons. About 90% of the course is illustrated, the remaining 10% consists of crisp bullet point slides.

Course Description
CI, CD and DevOps have taken over the software development world by storm. Most companies today realize that the practices of continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) will yield tremendous benefits like increased business revenue and faster time-to-market. The demand for these skills has been steadily rising over the last few years.
There are a plethora of tools available in the CI/CD/DevOps landscape today. Implementing continuous integration, continuous delivery and continuous deployment with these tools and frameworks can help us immensely in modernizing our software development lifecycle. It catches us bugs early and increases the quality of our software products. This, in turn, reduces the overall cost for software development in startups and enterprise alike.
But before getting into tools and frameworks, it is important that you get a holistic picture of CI / CD and DevOps. For this, you need to understand where we started from - the old school traditional software development cycle. We will pick holes in the old model, identify pain points and learn how CI / CD and DevOps evolved, one step at a time. Once you build a rock solid foundation using this course, you can move on to more specific tool oriented courses.
If you are thinking about moving on to CI/CD/DevOps from your old school software development model, this course is for you. Well illustrated with animations to help you grasp a clear understanding of the underlying principles. Once you complete this course, you can take on bigger challenges related to implementation.
The demand for professionals who have experience with CI/CD/DevOps has been growing steadily over the last few years. The salaries for these skills have gone through the roof and are only bound to go up as the demand for these skills increases. Professionals with CI / CD / DevOps skill set can demand as much as $150K as their yearly compensation as per latest US job and salary surveys. And this is where you start!

Being a graduate in Computer Science and Engineering, IT was a natural choice for me. I have donned a number of caps including that of a programmer, a software designer, IT operations analyst, and finally that of a Systems Architect. I have laid my hands on almost all facets of IT systems from servers, integrations, deployments to Enterprise Infrastructure Design & Architecture. I also spend a good amount of time conducting training sessions for my team. I lay emphasis on getting the core concepts right. All my courses are well illustrated. I tend to doze off if you bombard me with too many verbose slides. So when I set out to teach, I make sure I take the monotony out of it, and make it a fun and exciting journey. I would love to know my students better. So drop me a hello, and lets talk technology!

Love the short duration of this course yet it provided a thorough explanation of DevOp, CI/CD and pipelines. I was new to Operations and Management of a Cloud Hosted WebApp in it's O&M phase, so I had gaps in my understanding of what Cloud DevOps and was confused as to the steps and differences of CI/CD and pipelines.

An excellent beginner level introductory course by instructor Mr. John Honai into CI/CD domain Thanks a lot Mr. John Honai sir! The crisp explanation given to CI - Continuous Integration, CD - Continuous Delivery, and CD - Continuous Deployment over the 12 chapters are great In addition, the word of caution about CD - Continuous Deployment stands out This is a mandatory stepping stone course for beginners into the world of CI/CD

i liked the short and simple explanation but I got quiz after the course- which is more into the subject than discussed in the course

Explanation of CI/CD and DevOps was great in easy language and visual representation is a great add on it helps to consume the concept easily.

The content was fine but I am not sure the delivery method was the best. It felt like an old-school lecture with a static power point and the teacher reading a script but it was fine.

Great introductory CI/CD course. The content was easy to understand, practical, and well-structured. I would have liked to see more advanced real-world deployment scenarios and troubleshooting examples, but overall it was a valuable learning experience.

This is one of the best training material for beginners who wish to know about CI/CD , DevOps. Loved how it was explained throughout the course.

Awesome course! Exactly what I needed. I'm a student of Computer Science, and got the internship with a DevOps team. I knew nothing about DevOps. This course explains everything you need to know what DevOps is about.

I believe that there should be more explanations about DevOps, like what tools and automations can be used to automate the integration between Operations and Developers for the scripts and dependencies that needs to be installed on the environment for the tests. - it is clear that it is a new culture, but I would like more information on how a DevOps person for example, do it in real activities.
