Ever wonder how the pros get those stunning shots? Believe it or not, most of the breathtaking photographs you see in magazines and online every day are photographed with DSLR cameras just like yours. DSLR cameras are powerful tools that give you the ability to take stunning photographs that capture all those special things you see and moments you experience – photos that you will cherish for the rest of your life. The key to success is to use the camera correctly and that's what you will learn in this course.

As a beginner, you may feel overwhelmed and intimidated by all the camera's dials, buttons and settings, but that will be a thing of the past once you've completed this course. My goal is to fill you with confidence, not only when it comes to choosing good settings, but also when you compose your images. By the end of this course, you too will take stunning photos with your DSLR camera.

Content and Overview

This course is divided into two broad components: first we cover all the technical aspects, like camera equipment and support, as well as the camera's most important settings. After that we look at the artistic side of photography, which focuses on light, composition and creativity.

It has been structured in such a way that you won't ever feel overwhelmed by technical jargon, complicated camera functions or obscure principles. The aim is to keep everything as clear and simple as possible, and this was achieved by tackling each important photographic element separately in short and concise lectures that last between 2 and 5 minutes each. The majority of lectures consist of both teacher-style video clips (where I explain a setting, principle or tip) and slides, both of which contain photographic examples and audio (where I interpret each photographic example).

THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL LEARN FROM THIS COURSE:

How to use your Camera Equipment:

  • How to hold your camera correctly, which helps you to get sharp photos every time.

  • Which lenses to use for which photos, so that you can best capture a specific subject or scene.

  • How to change lenses correctly in order to prevent irritating dust spots from forming on each photograph.

  • What your DSLR camera's limitations are and how to compensate for them when you're photographing scenes with high contrast.

  • Why and when you should support your camera on tripods and bean bags.

How and when to change Camera Settings:

  • Different Shooting modes (which allows you to be more creative).

  • File size and format (ensuring that you take the best possible quality shots).

  • White balance and Metering mode (which allows you to influence the 'warmth' or 'coolness' of your photos and the way that the camera exposes what it sees.

  • Drive mode (which allows you to shoot like a pistol or like a machine gun).

  • Auto focus mode (which tells the camera whether you're photographing something standing still or something that is moving).

  • Auto focus point selection (which allows you to focus on either the whole subject or scene, or on a very specific part of it).

  • ISO (which allows you to take sharp photos in low light conditions)

  • Exposure compensation (which allows you to quickly make a photo lighter or darker).

  • How to influence the depth of field in your photos in Aperture Priority.

  • How to freeze action or capture movement in Shutter Priority.

  • How to use the little pictures, or Scene selections, on your camera's Shooting mode dial.

How Light influences your photos:

  • How to take colourful, representative images in front light.

  • How to highlight detail and texture in side light.

  • How to capture dramatic back light images that contain silhouettes and golden rim light.

  • How to take photos in diffused light on overcast days.

  • How to use your camera's built-in flash effectively.

What perfect Composition is:

  • When to change the camera orientation from horizontal to vertical.

  • How to blur the background of a perfect portrait photos in 4 easy steps.

  • How to apply the Rule of thirds to ensure beautifully balanced photos.

  • Where to leave the correct amount of space in your photos.

  • How to draw your viewers' eyes into your photos with the help of leading lines.

  • How to compose striking images by changing your angle.

  • 5 simple steps to perfect composition!

How to become a more Creative photographer:

  • How to use reflections in your photos.

  • What a natural frame is and how to find and use it in your images.

  • How to incorporate different complimentary colours in your photos.

  • How to use repetition effectively in your photos.

  • How to highlight the size of something by incorporating and element of scale, and finally,

  • How to tell a story with your photos.

I use a LUMIX S5II by Panasonic comes pretty much all the feature the Nikon and conion at about a third of the price I don’t feel good about and instructor doesn’t account for other cameras out there. I feel it not fair to class may should told the class off you don’t have a canon are Nikon you may want to take a different class.

I have finally made time to improve my photography skills. I had picked up a bargain second hand Canon EOS 7D, and wanted to learn how to use it to its full capability. This course met my needs and I enjoyed Villers' presentation style. It helped that Villers also focused on the Canon EOS family in his demonstrations on how to change settings.

A great introduction that teaches the foundations on how to master a DSLR camera. I love the instructor's method and pace of instruction (great delivery of the content, plus re-iteration of important concepts during, and at the end of, each lecture). Also, I appreciate the short, clear & concise, well-planned-out lectures that allow the concepts to easily be understood and retained by the student! I learnt a great deal as a beginner through this course, and I feel much more confident now in using my DSLR camera! Thank you, Villiers! Onward I go to capturing great photos!

This course is perfect so far! Well-organized for camera use progression as well as practicality. Examples are appropriate during instruction and real-world practices. I didn't know what to expect with this course, but it has given me exactly what I need to make best use of this camera while improving my photography skills (eliminating poor habits)! The instructor is phenomenal! I love his tone, minimal hand gestures (just enough for emphasis), tone, and most important his candor! This is a course I will review again and again.

It took a while for me to get used to Villier's South African accent, but once I did, I no longer saw his presentation style as being somewhat stiff. His course clarified many concepts I was a bit fuzzy with. I've also learned about some new concepts. I found the creativity section most useful, because I'm one of those people who don't always keep that concept at the front of my thinking.

I have completed the course. I’m excited to explore & try out all the settings & thumb rules taught during the course. I think the course is perfect for beginners as it takes you through each settings in the dslr which otherwise can be intimidating. The Trainer made each class interesting & easy to comprehend by giving examples and his instructions were clear. Can’t wait to exercise my learning into doings.

Villiers’s teaching is professional, clear and easy to follow - no hyped up music / logo’s or excessive displays of personality. The pace was perfect for me. I’m already familiar with my DSLR, but I needed a refresher course after a few years of not using it. The photographs of where you find camera setting on the camera are a very good teaching aid. His example photo’s taken on various settings brings the learning process to life. I would recommend this course to total beginners as well as people like me who need a refresher course. As someone else commented, Villiers is a real gentleman. The downloadable PDF course notes are a true bonus. I’ll be looking at your other courses. Thanks Villiers. Regards, Tanya

I really enjoyed this course! I had just bought a new DSLR camera and was determined to not spend all that money and they just use "auto". I liked the fact that I could sit with my camera in hand and walk through the settings with the instructor. I learned a lot, and have already successfully used some of what I've learned. Very good course

I have just recently purchased a cannon 80D dsrl camera of which I did not have a clue how to work. I found this course very helpful with detailed and simple explanations of how to operate my camera. Villiers Steyn explains and provides clear instructions of the various functions on the camera to create different photos in different settings. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone new to the world of photography or would maybe just like to know more about how the settings on their camera work. G. Hamilton

This was a very comprehensive yet easy to understand course. The instructor was very friendly and seemed to show a personal interest in me becoming a better photographer. I am new to using a DSLR camera, so the in depth lessons on understanding my camera were very important to me. The techniques for creating beautiful photos were helpful and motivating. I also liked that the instructor made himself available for additional support. Overall, I can say that this was a very helpful course for me. I can already see improvements in my photographic skills and am looking forward to improving even more.
