Course Description
This twelve-part video course will teach you how to engrave music professionally.
You’ll learn everything from the basics of note entry to advanced score layout. We’ll also cover numerous tips and suggestions to make engraving music faster and more precise.
My approach is to clearly and concisely show you how to create a variety of musical documents that have real-world applications. This approach will give you a modest portfolio of projects that you can use as references for your specific needs and interests.
We’ll make scores for solo instruments, vocalists, piano, chamber ensembles, percussion, and orchestra. We’ll work with graphics, typography, and custom page layouts. We also cover audio topics in Dorico’s play mode.
Lesson 1: learn to navigate the Dorico interface and create your first project: the theme from Caprice No. 24 for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini.
Lesson 2: add two variations to Caprice No. 24 (from lesson 1) and work with layout features unique to Dorico.
Lesson 3: create a lead sheet which contains lyrics, chord symbols, and repeat signs.
Lesson 4: create a traditional four-voice hymn with multiple verses and a custom score layout.
Lesson 5: create an excerpt for solo piano that utilizes modern notation, such as stemless notes, custom beaming, and free meter.
Lesson 6: create an incipit for six Chopin Nocturnes. The project covers working with master pages, typography, graphics, and how to insert frames for music and text.
Lesson 7: create the first page of an orchestral score by Johannes Brahms. We’ll also cover condensing and take a look at cues and part preparation.
Lesson 8: create three excerpts for percussion: a drum set, a percussion part with multiple staves and instruments, and a percussion kit with multiple instruments on one staff.
Lesson 9: notate the entire fourth movement of Anton Webern’s Five Movements for String Quartet. We’ll look at playing techniques, custom layout, and detailed score formatting.
Lesson 10: create a two-page music infographic that describes keyboard ornamentation, figured bass, and guitar tablature.
Lesson 11: learn to navigate play mode, customize VST playback, connect Dorico playback to Logic Pro, and use Dorico’s MIDI editing features.
Lesson 12: upload and format an XML file, take a deeper look at parts, cover music symbols and notation customization, as well as discuss best practices for score creation.

As a veteran Sibelius user, I was a little dubious regarding the opportuniy of picking up a new software. In the end I decided to go for it, and am happy with the choice. So I am a novice on Dorico, but a veteran on music typing. What I like is the fact that this course is thorough, and that it guides you step by step through all the major situations you might happen to encounter. Working on single assignments is the way to go. Kudos to Luke Carlson, who is knowledgable and reassuring even in the thorniest of situations.

It was pretty good, but I am a hands on learner. It would be better for me if after a couple things are taught, have a hands on session where you have to do/apply it and each section build on that. All of the shortcuts are overwhelming to someone who doesn't have much experience with notation software.

Informative, but there are better ways to input the slurs, although that could just be a feature of Dorico 6. Also, it would have been nice to learn how to input chords efficiently via qwerty keyboard. Had to look online to figure that one out. Using the shift-I shortcut and inputting intervals is tedious, chord mode is much more efficient for a qwerty keyboard.

Great step by step instructions. Very clear and concise. Many of these preferences, layout options, etc.. would take so long to find without this guidance. All the tips on shortcuts are much appreciated but I'm also glad that various steps are also presented using the menu options as alternatives.

Coming from a long time Finale user, this course helped make the transition fairly smooth. I can’t thank Dr. Carlson enough. I remember paying for 3 credits worth of an in-depth Finale engraving course. Dr. Carlson did all of that plus more in this Udemy course for a micro fraction of that that tuition cost. Thank you, Dr. Carlson, and I hope to meet you someday.

It's a great course! Luke did an amazing job trying to combine in 1 training as much as possible. It's clearly impossible to cover all Dorico functionality, especially taking into account how often new versions of Dorico are published. Luke also provided a great support by answering on questions. Therefore, don't forget first to search for know answers ;) I'd like percussion kit tool is covered. But as Luke mentioned there are many educational videos are available already and I'll watch them. I'd say the only real wish to Luke is to use a larger mouse cursor to easy follow it. Thanks again, Luke! Sergey

This course will help new Dorico users learn to use the program to gain notation skills and expand your horizons musically as well. This course comes from more of a "classical" point of view, but covers a broad range of musical genres. I would love to see subsequent courses, covering notating various other styles of music (for different stringed instruments, or more advanced drumming for example. The instructor does an exceptional job making this course informative and enjoyable. Thank you for the time you spent making this course. It's been very helpful in teaching me to learn this program quickly.

This course helped me to learn features about Dorico that I wouldn't have known existed. Luke presents the concepts in a simple format and then builds upon them in more complex settings. By the time I got to the end of the course, I had used several features multiple times, so they felt very familiar and comfortable already. The course is laid out and sequenced very well. I'm sure I will return to the course many times when I am called upon to do some project outside of my usual typesetting.

It's been very good, but I'm running into some obstacles here and there. As a Finale refugee, I'm finding it very difficult to understand editing/deleting notes or elements, and what to do if I make a mistake. I'm figuring that out on my own, but it would have been useful to see him messing up from time to time and how he corrects it. Dorico's grid is very logical, but the delete key etc. works in ways that aren't easy to grasp.

It's a great course. My one criticism has to do with the Infographic forced error. I was fine with the layout blowup but there was no explanation as to how we should have approached the project to avoid it. Why those numbers and when should we have entered them? How do we anticipate that situation in the future?
