Course Description

** Udemy Top Seller **  Courses by this instructor are consistently listed in Top Selling Music Courses.

This course is "5-Star Certified" by the International Association of Online Music Educators and Institutions (IAOMEI). This course has been independently reviewed by a panel of experts and has received a stellar 5-star rating.

This is a class designed for music producers who are ready to get serious about drum programming. The art of programming drums on a MIDI grid, in drum machines, or with audio files can be tricky to master, but when you finish this class, your tracks will have the extra energy that comes from professional drum tracks.

100% Answer Rate! Every single question posted to this class is answered within 24 hours by the instructor.

Dr. Allen is a professional musician, top-rated Udemy instructor, and university professor. In 2017 the Star Tribune featured him as a "Mover and a Shaker," and he is recognized by the Grammy Foundation for his music education classes.

I'll be using Ableton Live and some Logic in this course, but it will be easy to following along on whatever program you are most comfortable with. We will start the class off with basic rhythm theory, and learning where (typically) we put the kick, the snare, and the hi-hats. Then we will learn to adapt that pattern to work for a number of different styles.

DRUM PROGRAMMING MASTERCLASS, COMPLETE is a comprehensive class - that means there are three (3!) different classes that together make the complete sequence. This is the COMPLETE sequence and includes all of parts 1, 2, and 3.

Also in the class, we will be doing a number of analysis projects. That just means we will load up some tracks, and re-construct the beat in the track. Doing this will help us to see how those beats are built and guide us in making our own beats.

I am about to dip my toe into creating electronic music, and I wanted to have some basic concept of drum programming. I have already taken a ton of classes from J., so I bought this bundle. This is amazingly explained, very entertaining. It is so clear that I could do my first listen of the course while running, and I could still follow the lectures without the videos. It is an excellent way to get started.

By Seamus Graham on 7/26/2024

Overall I would not consider this a masterclass. A lot of these concepts are rudimentary and this course should be consolidated and updated with more modern drum sounds and should be more genre specific. A course of this length with a niche such as Hip Hop drum masterclass or pop drum masterclass would be more helpful to people not looking to learn about other genres that aren't are popular, like footwork for example. Only take this course if you are a complete beginner who has never programmed any drums before but even then there are better resources.

This course was incredibly helpful in getting me starting with making drumbeats and introducing me to tools and techniques that are very useful for making a better sounding beat. I went into this course with very little knowledge of making drum beats, but this course helped me learn how to listen to other beats and pick them apart piece by piece.

By Jeremy Hatch on 2/25/2020

Lots of great insights into making beats & the hallmarks of various key genres in electronic music. Although not a specific topic in the course, I also learned a lot about workflows in Ableton just from watching Jay make all these beats in real time, and the course has ended up significantly improving my own approach to working in Ableton. If you're using Ableton maybe that'll be a benefit for you too. However everything in here (except possibly the warping he uses to lock the model beats to the grid) could have been done with any good DAW. I will never produce music in any of the genres discussed here (my music is in the ambient/downtempo/lofi realm) but those sections were extremely interesting nonetheless, and they provided an excellent framework for presenting techniques that are widely applicable. I put these techniques into immediate use in my own beats and can hear the improvement. And of course Jay as always is a first-class explainer of technique and theory from the practical perspective of a composer or producer.

THIS IS A BEGINNER CLASS! PROS: 1) Impeccable music taste. 2) Knows the basics well and makes sure to repeat important ideas. 3) Links to good resources. 4) Gives downloads of sessions for you to work along with. 5) Moves at a pace set for beginners. CONS: 1) There's a lot of filler talking and glossing over parts. (I had to breeze through the first 2 sections and bit's of section 3, skipping over etc. in order to not lose interest) 2) Their navigation of the DAW is painstakingly slow at times. 3) They have hardware issues that make video capture and midi input simultaneously cause latency issues, so it can be hard to follow along at times. My assessment: I spent 10$ on the class and it was well worth it. I personally wouldn't have spent more than 40$ because apparently I'm not a beginner, but you may very well be a beginner.

By Daniel Guzman on 1/14/2020

Calling this class a master class is ridiculous. It was nothing more than the basic backbones of various genres. This is a good thing; however, what we want to learn is everything, from beginning to end, from breaks, to fills, to all the tricks done by drum programmers in modern music. This is what we expect to learn when we read "Masterclass". This is what I was expecting when I purchased this course, and I didn't get it.

By Geoff Petrie on 8/31/2019

This course was equal parts of education and inspiration. The course had great content to give you the insight you need to build your own beats as well as fun analysis of other tracks of different genres that allow you explore sounds in different ways. I couldn't recommend this more.

By John Churchill on 7/21/2019

It was good but I was expecting something a little different. We spent lots of time covering genres of music I'm just not interested in so I guess I was just hoping for something more technical and maybe more old school (if genre based at all). More about how to avoid making hits that are impossible (like open and closed hi-hat at the same time) and that are realistic drum sounds. I should probably just learn real drums in order to figure out programming digital ones. I think that is the type of thing I was hoping for.

By Shaun P on 7/17/2019

I am quite familiar with beat making. But taking the course from the very beginning as a refresher. Very good content, for a complete beginner, this course is the place to be. Looking forward to the later classes for more in depth knowledge. 5 star so far! Through part two. may class 60-72, the levels between mic feedback and tracks playing altar a lot. Therefore finding myself turn up and down a lot on my side. Something that could be monitored better. But not unmanageable.. Huge DnB & Dub fan. So loving the song selection for analysis.

By Maya Ormston on 2/26/2019

J Is a wonderful instructor! Through this class, I've learned so much more about Drum Programming than ever before. I used to spend hours trying to figure out the right way to create drum beats for my tracks, but now I can apply rhyme and reason (and don't forget rhythm) to help create better-sounding tracks in a lot less time. :)
