Course Description
NEW COURSE! AI coding agents like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Codex are powerful, but they don't know your workflows, your standards, or your domain expertise.
You've probably experienced the frustration: the agent "forgets" your instructions mid-session, produces inconsistent outputs, or requires you to repeat the same context every single time.
This isn't a prompting problem. It's a context problem.
And there's now an official standard that solves it.
What Are AI Agent Skills?
Agent Skills is a new open standard, maintained by Anthropic and adopted by Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, and others, that lets you extend any compatible AI agent with portable, reusable capabilities.
Instead of stuffing everything into a bloated system prompt and hoping the agent pays attention, Skills use progressive disclosure: the agent loads only what it needs, when it needs it.
The result? Leaner context, more consistent outputs, and expertise that travels with you across tools.
Write a skill once. Use it everywhere.
What You'll Learn
The Context Problem
Why AI agents struggle with long conversations, what "context rot" actually is, and why bigger context windows don't solve the problem.
How Skills Work
How do AI Agents use Agent Skills under-the-hood? The progressive disclosure pattern: discovery, metadata loading, task matching, activation, and execution. You'll understand why skills are architected this way, not just how to use them.
Skill Anatomy
SKILL file and folder structure, YAML frontmatter, instructions, scripts, references, and assets. What goes where and why.
Skill Authoring
How to write skills that actually work: good metadata for discoverability, clear instructions, token budget awareness, and designing for portability across agents.
Final Project
You'll create a production-ready skill for your own workflow, something you can actually use the day you finish this course.
How This Course Teaches
If you've taken my other courses, you know the approach: Don't Imitate, Understand.
This isn't a tutorial where you copy what I type and hope it works. We'll go under the hood. You'll learn why context windows create problems for agents, why progressive disclosure solves them, why the skill specification is designed the way it is, and how AI Agents use Skills under-the-hood.
When you understand the mechanics, you can adapt. You can debug. You can build skills the documentation doesn't cover.
Who This Is For
Developers using Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Codex who want consistent, repeatable results.
Team leads who want to encode standards and workflows that agents follow automatically.
Anyone tired of repeating the same instructions every session.
Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with AI coding agents. No specific programming language required. Skills are language-agnostic.
Why Now?
Agent Skills is new. The specification was open-sourced in late 2025 by Anthropic, and adoption is accelerating fast. OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have all added support.
The developers who understand this standard early will be the ones building the skills everyone else uses.
This is a short course. You can finish it in an afternoon and have a working skill by dinner.

Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, now married and living in upstate New York, Tony is primarily focused these days on trying to be a good husband. While inexperienced at that, he's quite experienced in all things web.
Tony has been programming since he was 12 years old, and got into web sites and web application development at 16. After graduating with a Computer Science degree from Case Western Reserve University, Tony continued with that interest as a software application developer and architect, database designer, and user interface designer.
His 25 years of experience has ranged across technologies such as modern semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, Node.js, SQL as well as user experience design, usability testing and more.
He believes strongly that deeply understanding any topic allows you to properly learn it and, even more importantly in a real-world environment, quickly overcome problems.
He also has a deep interest in human nature and behavior, and how that impacts human-computer interaction. This interest translated into extending his career into user experience design and usability research.
Another link in the chain is his 25 years of experience in public speaking and teaching, both in front of large groups and as a one-on-one private instructor.

The course touches on an important aspect of interacting with LLMs: what text you send as context and how LLMs handle it. Ultimately, every agent/framework formats your text (e.g., system prompt, skills, tools, etc.) into an array of messages and feeds it to the LLM. Knowing that and how it works makes a huge difference in getting the best results from your generative/agentic AI project.

The content is great, but I had trouble seeing the video and your website is difficult to navigate to find support, especially while in the middle of a course. Suggestion is to add some direct "Need help?" links within your video player, because I honestly thought for the first 10 minutes that it was only text on a black screen by choice. Turns out CC was on and without that I would've been unable to follow much. So, just a suggestion - I'm sure lots of people have this same issue (Hardware acceleration was on).

There were a few moments when I was not sure the course was for my zero level, but in the end we got there. Quite helpful, and in the end I learned what I need to do to create my first skill in Anthropic, for example!

In general a good course. Good build up with theory leading to usage. Course seems short but it was adequate. I was missing some hands-on in between like writing a simple skill earlier on and a more complicated one later. Also some course material with tips and links would have been nice.

Another great Tony Alicea course! This course helped me better UNDERSTAND Agents Skills, including how they work, how I can use them and how I can BETTER create them. The consistent, successful model Tony uses for his courses, integrating Big Word Alerts and Conceptual Asides, draws me to purchase his courses when I'm interested in finding out HOW something works and not just implementing it. Thanks again Tony!

I chose to create an Agent Skill that helps users complete a specific task more efficiently by giving clear guidance, organizing information, and producing useful responses. The skill is designed to understand the user’s request, break it down into steps, and provide helpful output that saves time and reduces confusion. By building and using an Agent Skill, I learned how important it is to give clear instructions so the agent understands the goal and responds accurately. I also learned that an Agent Skill can be useful for automating repeated tasks, improving productivity, and making information easier to understand. Testing the skill helped me see how small changes in instructions can improve the quality of the responses.

Great course!!! It really helps to understand the mental model and fundamentals around SKILL.md Course also explains well important technical terminologies with "Big Word Alert". I appreciate the effort from Author of the Course

When we talk about AI courses, specially those related to LLMs and such, the great majority of courses are really shallow in content, focusing in aspects that only someone who had zero contact with the technology would find useful or interesting. This course surprised me positively by being short, well paced and focusing on an aspect that really makes a difference when working with AI: creating good, well written skills. Kudos to the creator.

I really liked how the course simplified the topic that a non-technical person can understand and have appropiate infleuences that nudges course recipient to become a skill builder in a open source way and help the community of skill builders leveraging available AI agents.

This course is excellent for understanding what skills are and how to build them effectively. The explanations are simple and easy to follow, the pace is just right, and the examples are very well chosen and clearly explained. Overall, a very well-structured course for anyone looking to develop a strong foundation in this area.
