Artists covered - Lightnin' Hopkins, John Loudermilk, Gary Davis, Sam Chatmon and Guy Davis.
The acoustic blues guitar masters had an enormous influence on generations of modern guitarists - the acoustic swing blues of Broonzy, for example, became the electric style of Muddy Waters, then Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The starting point fo any guitar picker wanting to play any kind of blues is to study the techniques of the original blues guitar players, to see how they put their music together and to appreciate how their fingers produced so much rhythm and syncopation onj a relatively simple instrument like the acoustic guitar.
This basic course covers several basic guitar finger picking styles, and my approach is to show you just one thing - anyone can play the blues guitar with the right tuition, time and practice - it's all up to you.
Each guitar lesson includes in-video guitar tablature, discussion about technique and slow motion demonstrations of both hands. This course is a great primer for my other blues guitar lessons, which cover all of the major guitar picking styles from most famous blues men of old.

Now online students can benefit from over 40 years of real experience playing blues guitar in the authentic way. If you want to play real blues guitar just like the old blues men, then is where you come to find out how. Keep it real with Jim Bruce and play blues guitar like it was originally played using these state-of-the-art acoustic guitar lessons.
A word from Jim - " My playing career goes way back, to the folk clubs on the UK in the sixties, clubs pubs and bars in six countries, and on the city streets of Europe. This is how I learned my trade.
One day someone asked me to slow down a lick to show them exactly what I was doing with my hands. As I tried to do this, I found that I was doing much, much more than I realized. It was these tiny hand movements that make acoustic blues so exciting when it's performed properly. This is the main focus of my lessons - to show students exactly how to play blues guitar in great detail. "
Peace, Jim Bruce

Can't find or print the tabs for each lesson so I have given up on this course

Another great blues guitar course from Jim. Still very slow on learning the Steady Thumb but there is still plenty to learn here. The Basic in E is great and the Thumb of Rev. Gary Davis is of particular interest to me. Well worth a look! His long courses are on my radar. BJ

This course is easy to follow, evokes deep feeling about the genre, and makes you want to feel what your playing...as if it were your pulse...your breath....

None of the resources, (i.e PDF tablature, or simply a chord chart of the cords used) but after each lesson a PDF resource is consistently repetitive, a PDF "closer" you might say encouraging a package of lesson. The offer is great, but without making effort to provide course content PDF resources is often disappointing.

This course is great for beginners, who want to learn blues the fun way. Jim is never boring, and is a great teacher.

Jim does a great job with teaching blues finger picking. My only complaint is that he mentions tabs that can be downloaded "below". There is no below and I can't find any tabs to download. You can copy them from the video but when you pause the video the player covers up the bottom line of the tab. So you have to make several passes to get it all. The only other thing I would like to see is a little transposition to other keys. As soon as he fixes those issues this will be a five star class.

Jim's style and methods of teaching are clear and precise. He doesn't waste your time with a bunch of extraneous filler crap. Right to the point, on the mark and thorough! I'm grateful for finding him! Check out ALL of his offerings!

I love the songs being taught in this course. I thought they would be too hard but the way Jim breaks each section down allows me to get it right before moving on. I reccomend his courses to all all my blues fingerpicking friends.

...but I am battling depression and that Voice of Perfection that will NOT give me permission to "stink". This has NOTHING to do with Mr. Bruce's avuncular and welcoming style of teaching, however. I imagine him to be a patient teacher in real life. As for me, his videos are helpful in combating my inner doubts and fears about this form of the blues. Saw an interview with Derek Trucks on a Guitar Center website, if memory serves; he said the blues was dying. I cannot allow THAT to happen. Mr. Bruce ENSURES it won't, as other great teachers of this distinctly American form of music cannot and will not, either. Thank you, Mr. Bruce. You're teaching ME, in addition to the blues, just how to stay BALANCED...and if a blues teacher can do THAT...well, it's worth the price of admission.......
