Course Description
Learn FreeCAD 1.1 from the Ground Up
Welcome to FreeCAD 1.1: Complete Beginner's Course – No Experience Needed, a practical, step-by-step course designed to take you from absolute beginner to confidently creating, assembling, and documenting mechanical designs using FreeCAD 1.1 — a powerful, free, and open-source CAD application.
No prior CAD experience is required. The course starts with the fundamentals and gradually builds your skills through clear explanations, guided demonstrations, practical exercises, and real-world mechanical modeling projects. You'll learn not only how to use FreeCAD tools, but also understand the concepts and workflows behind them.
Fully Updated for FreeCAD 1.1
This course has been completely updated for FreeCAD 1.1 with revised video demonstrations, improved narration, clearer explanations, and a more consistent learning experience throughout the course.
The update also incorporates learner feedback and practical experience from students who have taken the course, with improvements made to the explanations, lesson flow, demonstrations, and overall learning experience.
The lessons have been refined to provide more context around the tools and workflows, helping you understand not only how to use a feature, but also why and when it is used.
What You'll Learn
You'll begin by getting familiar with the FreeCAD 1.1 interface, including documents, views, navigation, display settings, workbenches, and essential workspace customization.
You will then move into the Sketcher Workbench, where you'll learn how to create and edit 2D geometry and use geometric and dimensional constraints to build accurate, fully constrained sketches. You'll work with lines, arcs, circles, rectangles, slots, splines, and other commonly used sketching tools while understanding how constraints control your designs.
Next, you'll learn parametric 3D modeling using the Part Design workflow. Through practical models and exercises, you'll work with features such as:
Pad and Pocket
Revolve
Groove
Loft
Pipe
Helix
Fillet and Chamfer
Draft
Shell
Linear and Circular Patterns
Datum Planes and Axes
Local Coordinate Systems
Other essential Part Design features
Rather than simply following a sequence of clicks, you'll learn how these features work together to create and modify parametric mechanical models.
Learn FreeCAD Assemblies
The course also introduces assembly design, where you'll learn how individual components can be brought together to create complete mechanical assemblies.
You'll work with both top-down and bottom-up assembly approaches and learn how to use common mechanical joints, including:
Revolute
Slider
Cylindrical
Ball
Other commonly used assembly relationships
You'll also learn how to approach assembly creation in a structured way so that individual components and their relationships can be managed effectively.
Create Professional Technical Drawings
Once you've created your 3D models and assemblies, you'll learn how to document your designs using the TechDraw Workbench.
You'll learn how to create and work with:
Standard drawing views
Section views
Detail views
Dimensions
Annotations
Drawing templates
Technical documentation
You'll also learn how to export your drawings in formats such as DXF and SVG for further use.
Practical, Project-Based Learning
Throughout the course, you'll work with practical mechanical models and exercises designed to reinforce the concepts you've learned.
The goal is not simply to learn individual FreeCAD commands. You'll develop a systematic approach to sketching, modeling, assembling, and documenting mechanical designs so that you can apply your skills to your own projects.
You'll have the opportunity to practice the tools and techniques through guided exercises and practical projects, helping you build confidence as you progress through the course.
By the End of This Course
By completing the course, you'll be able to:
Navigate and work confidently in FreeCAD 1.1
Create and constrain accurate 2D sketches
Build parametric 3D mechanical models
Understand and use essential Part Design features
Modify and manage parametric designs
Create mechanical assemblies
Apply different assembly joints

It is explained in a simple way, step by step with enough exercise to practice and understand what kind of mistake you do while using the program. Really usefull. Thank you

What an amazing course! If you want to learn FreeCAD this is the only course needed. All sections are clear & concise, easy to follow and includes files. this is a hands on course, by the end of the course you will have the knowledge needed. I'm using FreeCAD 1.1, there are a few differences, but was able to complete all exercises.

Since learning Free CAD from the beginning, the teaching has been comprehensive, the content is good, and each topic is gradually added, making it easy to understand.

The course was very good for what it covered. But calling it "Complete FreeCAD" is a bit of a stretch. It really just scratched the surface. Given the length of the course, that is what I expected, the title was just a little misleading. But overall, the things that were covered were generally explained very well and I enjoyed the course. I also now feel like I can look at other FreeCAD courses or videos and I will be better able to follow them. I've also already designed a few parts of my own for 3D printing using what I learned in this course.

Starts off a bit slow but it is getting better. Some of the practice modules move too quickly if you are trying to follow along. Maybe include dimensions of practice objects in a pdf?

At the beginning, the course assumes you have already opened a file, which is not the case if you simply follow the course from the start. The course assumes you're on a computer running Windows, which will not be the case for everyone. Makes a big difference in the use of shortcuts. In Lesson 16 constraints are suddenly thrown at you, without ever explaining what they are and what their purposes are. Section 4 explains every possible way to create Datum Geometries without ANY explanation what you can or should do with it.... (?) Etc... the course assumes way more knowledge one can expect from a real novice to 3D CAD drawing. With the help of AI and other video's it is possible to follow along though, and that makes the course absolutely helpful. I like the hands on Tutorials a lot and it is of great value you can use the resources as example.

It is great course to learn from zero step by step, every step is a little step, that makes the course very educational to learn all the tools and functions of the FreeCAD software.
By Manuel Martín Bravo on 11/22/2025
This course provides a concise yet thorough introduction to the basics of FreeCAD. It makes use of excellent pronunciation of simple American English in most sections, which enhances comprehension, especially for non-native English speakers. It is intended for use with version 1.0. This review was written on November 22, 2025.

The method and approach adopted to teach FreeCAD here are are cleanly done and easy to understand. It gives you the idea directly of what FreeCAD can do with ready made models so you won't lost focus, absolutely recommended for beginners. Honestly, a 5 hour++ course is just the right amount of time to learn FreeCAD and start exploring on you own. You can always re-watch the course several times, it served as a fast guidance in case you forget certain FreeCAD feature functions. However, like many FreeCad courses are merely designed for mechanic objects. To improve this course, I think if there is electrical engineering objects design included, it will make the course more outstanding than the others. The instructor's feedback is there but to some extend only, you have to figure it out yourself. Thank you.

Overall a professional presentation, however some items such as work planes & lines would have been better if a second orthographic view was shown. Also for a beginners course, there should an overview of text creation and editing, as well as creating alternate dimension styles.
