Elliot Callighan
Originally a violinist, Elliot began his journey in music and audio using the Suzuki method at the age of four. He began playing piano at eight, guitar at 12 and at 20, Daft Punk convinced him to give the computer a shot, too. (Thankfully!)
Elliot has degrees in Music Composition and Sound Design, and his work has been featured in campaigns for United Airlines, Instagram, Spiderman: Far From Home, GMC, The Godrej Group, Chevrolet Motors, the Goodman Theatre and the Joffrey Ballet as well as many independent films and games.
Elliot always focuses on creating distinct personality and aesthetic in all audio while maintaining that memorable "hummable" factor in his music. He brings this sensibility to his work in games, film, trailer and commercial projects. He has served as Soundpost Co-Chair for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Overture Council and teaches as Adjunct Faculty in the Film and Game programs at DePaul University.

It's nice! My only suggestions are to: either make it possible to upload a video file if an assignment calls for it, or have it say that it's a written assignment instead (I made a video as the instructions said, but then I saw other learners were just submitting text responses), and also to let folks know that what we do in this course can be done in other DAWs, not necessarily just Pro Tools, making it clear that the software is up to anyone's preference (and wallet), and that most of these skills translate well into other popular work environments Also it would have been great to actually have assignments feedback from the course owners, but it seems like it's been abandoned for the most part. Perhaps the newer courses are more direct

This is an ongoing review, so it will be edited/added to. This course has a lot of useful information about the technical aspects of sound: how it interacts with various environments, how it is perceived, what type of hardware you should use to capture it. Also, if you've never used a DAW, or are just starting out with it, this course will help with that as well. This is all great, but I'm finding this course a bit lacking in the department of actual sound design process. The theory and technical advice are legitimately helpful, but way more time should have been spent on explaining additive synthesis (since it's an integral part of video game sound design), what types of digital or analog instruments can be used effectively with this approach; a brief detour into how synthesizers can be manipulated to make sounds instead of melodies also would be very helpful – that means teaching how to make sounds from scratch, which the title of this course seems to imply. An actual video example of sound design process is only covered in one section, which is underwhelming. So, all in all, this course offers a lot of basic technical info that will be very helpful to newcomers (about 70%) along with some brief insights into sound design (about 30% or less). Also, I should mention that the assignments in this course are almost all very good and let you learn the fundamentals of sound design in an effective and fun way.

The information is very helpful and I enjoy the examples, but when I compare this course with others in the same field (audio, sound design, beginner level) I do not find the teaching style very energizing. Frequent empty pauses where you wait for something to happen and little to no post editing of the tutorials to include helpful dynamics like zooming in on a button, highlighting an important feature, or isolating a specific area that is being worked on. I personally am very dedicated to learn this information which is why I still get through the average power point slides and other suboptimal points mentioned above. But it takes me A LOT more energy to follow and I am sure there are some beginners that don't bother finishing because at some spots it can remind a lot of the monotonous lectures in school. The video game and movie examples are AMAZING and there is so much potential here, but I just cannot rate it more than average, that would do other courses I've taken and rated 4 or 5 stars injustice. TAKE THIS COURSE IF you only want the knowledge and some interesting assignments, BUT NOT if you are expecting someone who is extremely enthusiastic and makes good PowerPoint presentations.

Fantastic course even for those who are several years deep into production in various fields. While some things may sometimes feel like a rehashing of more basic knowledge, the sprinkles of wisdom, experience, and knowledge, keep the course thought-provoking and captivating throughout. Highly recommend for all experience levels as it allows for thinking outside of our usual production state.

As I have been working in audio and have degree in audio, most of what I have learned so far is not new to me BUT I have been learning few things here and there that I did not know which I am enjoying.

Thank you for this course. Overall presentation is good, there are some parts that can be added and be improved such as sound quality on lectures, add more part where you are making more sound designs/more practical stuff. I wish for more sound design showcase stuff like making gun sounds, explosions or others and not just mostly theory. But overall good course and worth the price. :D

Very informative course. I did the whole course using Ableton Live instead of ProTools, there was just one task I couldn't do. It was very funny to do all the mini tasks and I really got a good basic overview about Sound Design! Coming from musicproduction after over 1 year break also gave me some refresh of a few topics. Elliot is very good in teaching and responds pretty fast to all questions. Only downside is that there's not much feedback for your tasks you hand in, but I can live with that. ;) I'm pretty hyped for the other 2 courses and will start them straight away. Highly recommend it, just get all 3 courses. :)

I already own a quite decent musical training (a Conservatory Diploma), but I am new to Sound Design. I am finding this class really amazing! Elliot is a great teacher! He starts from basics, giving insights directly from his experience. I am following the course using Reaper instead of Pro Tools, and I have not been having particular problems at the moment (I am now in section 3). I can't wait to finish this course and to take modules 201 and 301 as well!

I've just finished watching the course (I still have to do some assignments though). It is a good course to be honest for starters and intermediate level. It could be a little bit boring on some parts from people who come from music production or sound engineering background because he shows also how to use a DAW and basic aspects of EQ & Compression. But that doesn't mean that from a beginner level course there is nothing to learn. Elliot also could fix the volume of his voice because in some videos his voice is louder and in other videos are quieter. Also I'm not sure 100% of this but it seems he doesn't respond to questions and he doesn't give feedback on the assignments. I might be wrong for this. Maybe he answered or gave feedback on a personal message. All in all, it's a good course. I've purchased also the other 2 courses he has. But it's worth buying this for a discounted price of 10-20$.

Great course, I can't wait to start another part- 201 Additional material for practicing is good idea and powerful tool. This course is said to last 5 hours but I takes much more if you practise.
