Our take
Based on the ratings of 2,335 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, free introduction to HTML from Laurence Svekis. It runs about two hours across 29 lectures in three sections, and nearly all of the time sits in one main block on tags, tables, lists, forms, images and links. It also touches on HTML5 and building a reusable template. The audience is people who have never written markup, including returners like the former print designer who left one of the reviews.
Reviewers mostly like how plain it is. Several call it clear, well structured and easy to follow, and one says it sticks to the basics without a lot of unnecessary talking. Teaching gets mixed marks. One older review says Svekis rambles, repeats himself and opens each video very loudly. Another says he assumes too much about the server setup, and a Mac user hit a snag saving workspaces in dev tools. One learner says forms and CSS left them confused.
Of 2,335 ratings, 999 are five stars and 850 are four, against 120 that are one or two, so the 4.2 average holds up. There are no quizzes or coding exercises, so you will be watching far more than building. The last update was November 2024. For a free first look at HTML it is a fair pick. Anyone who wants real practice should plan to follow it with a longer, hands-on course.
Pros
- Two hours and 29 lectures, so a total beginner can finish it in a weekend
- Reviewers say it explains HTML plainly without making it sound overcomplicated
- Covers tables, lists, forms, images, links and a reusable page template
- Free, with the resources and links supplied inside the course
Cons
- No quizzes or coding exercises, so there is little built-in practice
- One reviewer finds the delivery rambling, repetitive and loud at the start of videos
- Setup steps assume some know-how, and forms and CSS confused at least one learner
Very good intro into learning HTML without making it sound overcomplicated. Fantastic resources are cited as well!
True beginners are fine, but the server and dev tools setup assumes a bit more than the level suggests.

The course content is good. Even though i know alot about HTML and CSS, i still learned a lot of new things that even i didn't knew! The downside is that i think while it is an introductory course, the students should have atleast some basic grasp of HTML before going through this course since some of the things the instructor went through without properly explaining them. Nevertheless i applaud his efforts in providing such an outstanding course

i had a nice time taking this introductory course, it was really the basics which i needed to begin with, only thing is that i had issues with the graphics, at some point it looked really blurred and i had to strain my eye even with the use of glasses.

It was great in terms of content. Being a beginner I also would appreciate it maybe if we could have a coding pane within the course content so that we practice with the tutor on the go

I loved the course, it's really good to start with or to get some basics knowledge of HTML. ++ Great audio quality without any background noises! ( If you decide to learn you should you the "pause" button like a lot :) and try it yourself, and try to start with a Visual Studio it easier )

very meaningful and necessary course. the lecture has been delivered in such a wonderful manner that even a layman can understand technical terms very easily. I am extremely happy to join this course as this has made me aware about HTML which is very useful form me.

I did learn some new things by taking this course. I believe that the instructor knows what he's talking about. He does not explain things very clearly though, and often rambles and repeats himself. He also begins every video with a very loud, shouting voice and then gets gradually calmer and quieter as the video goes on, lulling you into a calm state, only to be startled again by the next aggressive intro. I believe he could improve the quality of his content by writing a script, revising said script to prevent repeating himself and ensuring clear communication, and re-recording his lessons, perhaps with a more consistent volume as well. Again, the information presented is still good information. I would consider this a really good first draft of what could be a much clearer lesson.

Great short introductory course to HTML. It introduces the most important elements to you in a very useful manner so you can start practicing and developing simple pages. HTML is really the first step in becoming a web developer and you shouldn't skip it. Yes, websites without CSS and JS look very plain and uninteresting but without understanding it properly, you're basically lost. Also, it's good that the instructor included the source code, especially the last one that covers the entire website. Other code editors you can use to edit your code are Atom and Sublime Text if you don't like Brackets. The instructor is quite knowledgeable about what he is talking about and I'm glad he also tries to cover the bigger picture (e.g. evolution of HTML, talking about how CSS and JS interact with HTML and so on).

Buen curso introductorio al HTML. Breve, claro y sencillo. Solo he echado en falta unos subtítulos, pero tampoco han sido imprescindibles, y algún ejercicio práctico para afianzar lo expuesto, aunque se podía copiar lo explicado.

Course is very, very good, but one important thing is missing. It will be more than great if trainer will add chapter regarding creation of menu (horizontal or vertical). It will be much better then chapter for java script... in my opinion java script should be included in java script course. Here we are wasting time on chapter regarding java script, but we are not reaching any valuable information... just simple alert... But overall, great job :-)
