Course Description

Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.

Git is easy to learn and has a tiny footprint with lightning fast performance. It outclasses SCM tools like Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and ClearCase with features like cheap local branching, convenient staging areas, and multiple workflows.

From web developers to app developers, Git is useful to anyone who writes code or track changes to files. So what’s it all about and why should you start using it?

What is Git?

Git is the most commonly used version control system. Git tracks the changes you make to files, so you have a record of what has been done, and you can revert to specific versions should you ever need to. Git also makes collaboration easier, allowing changes by multiple people to all be merged into one source.

So regardless of whether you write code that only you will see, or work as part of a team, Git will be useful for you.

Git is software that runs locally. Your files and their history are stored on your computer. You can also use online hosts (such as GitHub or Bitbucket) to store a copy of the files and their revision history. Having a centrally located place where you can upload your changes and download changes from others, enable you to collaborate more easily with other developers. Git can automatically merge the changes, so two people can even work on different parts of the same file and later merge those changes without loosing each other’s work!

would be nice to have : - graphics to illustrate the principles - real workshops to practice, not only quizzes

By Martin Mirchevski on 12/16/2024

The course is a mess, without structure and repeating the same commands over and over again. The course presents only a small portion of git commands, around 6-7 in total - enough to start a project from scratch, nothing beyond that. If it's a "crash" course, you'd expect more commands to be covered. The commands are not well described, speaker has a habit to speak about different things on the screen, such as the file name and why he has named it that way. Example is the notes app, nano, which is useful but is not what the course is about.

I recommend adding more visualizations to the lessons, not just a written command and aural explanation.

Because it's quite easy to understand. In section4 11. part2, people using git for the first time would have serious issues and confusion. The following commands should be taught: 1. git config --global credential.helper store (To store credentials of the author as well as his Github username and password, to give ease during pushing after pushing for the first time) 2. git config --global user.email 3. git config --global user.name 4. git push -u origin master/main (master/main for mac/windows users respectively, for first-time pushers. Also there was no lecture teaching people that upon first push they would need to provide their GitLab or GitHub login details) These may confuse absolute beginners especially now Github use Tokens rather than personal passwords.

it is very simple and flowed strait forward but some of the videos are seems to be cut of or not cooked well. any way it was very useful thanks

Very helpful course and i liked the simplicity and shortness of the videos and the quiz after every small part. great job

By Ahmed Alfadil on 3/5/2022

It was a really nice course and I recommend it to everybody who wants to improve their programming skills ... it's so useful, especially for beginners.

By Haidy Ahmed on 2/25/2022

most of those commands are only for mac users not windows and it made me search a lot to get the specific commands for me. the course is very helpful thank you!

By Jose Moukarzel on 1/10/2022

I am not a developer. I am a technical writer. But this is so far a good match for me. English accent makes it sometimes hard to follow, what would otherwise be a very clear explanation.

By Youssef Mamdoh El-Nemaky on 8/10/2021

This was a really good introduction course for git. I really enjoyed it and found it easy to follow up with. There were only few missing pieces like downloading git and getting it started for the first time ever other than that, it was such a great course.
