Golang101 - Learn Golang Basics (Udemy.com)

Learn the basic features of Golang in an hour

Our take

Based on the ratings of 180 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a free, 84 minute introduction to Go from Orhun Onar, a mechatronics engineer who works on automotive projects. Nineteen lectures cover Hello World, variable types, a single function, loops, if and switch statements, then close with a 26 minute rock-paper-scissors project. There are no quizzes, exercises or certificate. It is really for people who have never touched Go and want to see whether the syntax clicks before spending money on a longer course. About 3,900 students have enrolled since it went up in early 2023.

Reviewers like how plainly the basics are presented and that there are plenty of code examples to go with the theory. Four-star reviews call it a nice little training or a quick overview, and the rock-paper-scissors game gets a specific thank you. The complaints are consistent. Three-star and two-star reviewers say it is not detailed enough, that explanations are sometimes thin, and that anyone who already programs will find it too basic. One student missed where the VS Code Go extension was installed. Only 52 of 180 ratings are five stars, and 82 are four, which fits: solid, not memorable.

Value is easy to judge because it costs nothing. The course has not been updated since February 2023, though the syntax it teaches has not changed much, so that matters less here than it would elsewhere. Treat it as a warm-up. If it clicks, the other courses it sits beside on our Go page, such as Go: The Complete Developer's Guide, are the place to go for everything this one leaves out.

Best forComplete newcomers who want a free, one-evening taste of Go syntax before committing to a long paid course.
Skip it ifYou already program in another language and want depth on goroutines, packages, testing or web work.

Pros

  • Free, and short enough to finish in a single sitting at 84 minutes across 19 lectures
  • Plenty of code examples sit alongside the theory, which reviewers say makes it easier to follow
  • Ends with a 26 minute rock-paper-scissors project that one student singles out as what stuck
  • Presents variables, loops and conditionals plainly enough that true beginners keep up

Cons

  • Too shallow for anyone with prior programming experience; several reviewers wanted more depth
  • Explanations are sometimes thin and one student had to look elsewhere to fill gaps
  • No quizzes, exercises or certificate, and no update since February 2023
Great introduction and quick overview of Go. Definitely worth a watch and working along with the examples if you are new to Go. There's plenty of code examples to go with the theory, which makes learning easier.
Ewald Horn, a student

Beginner is accurate: the only requirement is basic VS Code use, and reviewers with prior programming experience found it too thin.

Course Description

Dear Students,

Welcome to the Golang course on Udemy! I am thrilled to be your instructor and guide you through the exciting world of Golang. In this course, you will learn how to program using Golang, an open-source programming language developed by Google.

Golang, also known as Go, is a modern programming language designed to make it easy to write efficient, reliable, and scalable software. It has gained popularity in recent years due to its simplicity, speed, and concurrency support. It is used by companies like Google, Uber, Netflix, and Dropbox to build large-scale systems.

In this course, you will start by creating your first Golang program, a "Hello World" project. You will then learn about variable types in Golang, including integers, floats, strings, and Booleans. You will learn how to declare variables and constants, and how to use them in your programs.

Next, you will learn how to create functions in Golang. You will learn how to define functions, pass arguments, and return values. You will also learn about loops in Golang, including for loops and while loops, and how to use them to iterate through arrays and other data structures.

In addition to loops, you will also learn about logical statements in Golang, including if statements, switch statements, and conditional expressions. These statements allow you to make decisions in your programs based on the values of variables and other conditions.

Finally, you will apply your knowledge of Golang to a sample project, where you will build a program that uses functions, loops, and logical statements to solve a problem.

I am excited to guide you through this course and help you learn Golang. By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in Golang programming and be ready to take on more advanced Golang projects.

Let's get started!

I missed where the Golang module was installed for Visual Studio Code, so I went with the one supported by Go Team from Google. The rest is great, it presents the basics very clearly.

By David Fernández on 3/9/2026

Buen comienzo para aprender las estructuras básicas del lenguaje de programación Go.

By Marta Latorre on 11/24/2025

Very good course for beginners for free :)

By Harley Jones on 10/29/2025

Good overview, not in depth enough for beginners and advanced programmers

By Roberto Leibman on 3/20/2025

The course was ok, but too basic for me, I'm looking for a go course for an advanced developer in other technologies, and this one was good for a total newbie

By Jaikamal on 7/7/2024

Today, I've learnt something new apart from my syllabus especially that rock-paper-scissors game program. Thank you for giving this kind of opportunity to learn and explore new staffs to me. Thank you.

By Jens Schendel on 12/23/2023

Nice little training to show the main features of the GO programming language to beginners.

By Aditya Gupta on 11/25/2023

It’s simpler and given an idea to deep dive into the language more.

By Ayush on 4/15/2023

Really good for basics, but have to refer chat gpt sometimes haha!

By Pande Made Saka Mahendra Arioka on 3/19/2023

I already use golang but not to learning, but to surviving. Now I know better about basic. Thanks.
