Our take
Based on the ratings of 16,517 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in February 2017. No course pays to be reviewed.
A free, three-hour introduction to Hadoop from a team of consultants who call themselves Big Data In Real World. The syllabus shows 15 lectures across eight sections covering the big data problem, HDFS, MapReduce in Java, then a single lecture each on Pig and Hive. About 184,000 students have enrolled and it holds a 4.5 rating from over 16,000 reviews. It suits people who need the vocabulary and the big picture before starting a job that touches Hadoop, not anyone hoping to come out writing production jobs.
Reviewers say the explanations are clear and well organized, and several call it the right first stop before a longer Hadoop course. The free multi-node cluster gets singled out as the real gem, since it lets students run what they just watched. The complaints are worth reading. One student says the MapReduce section is too brief to make the concepts stick. Two mention the captions, which are auto-generated and in places unintelligible against the instructor's accent. One older review warns that following the AWS setup in lecture 14 spun up paid EC2 instances, so check what you launch. One found the delivery monotonous.
The bigger issue is age. The last update was February 2017, so expect older tooling, and there is no HBase or Spark at all. Over 40 minutes of the runtime is also previews for the team's other courses. It shares our Hadoop shortlist with The Ultimate Hands-On Hadoop and three Spark courses; this one is the on-ramp, not the destination. Take it as a weekend primer, then move on to a longer course for real depth.
Pros
- Free access to the team's multi-node Hadoop cluster so students can run the examples
- Clear, well organized explanations of Hadoop and MapReduce concepts, per reviewers
- Short at 3.3 hours with four quizzes, so it fits into a weekend
- 4.5 rating from over 16,000 reviews, and it costs nothing
Cons
- Last updated February 2017, so expect older tooling and no Spark or HBase
- Auto-generated captions are hard to follow against the accent, two reviewers say
- One reviewer got a surprise AWS bill following the cluster setup in lecture 14
Even though it is not a paid course, the explanation of concepts of Hadoop and MapReduce are very easy to grasp. Good Job guys!
Genuinely beginner for HDFS, Pig and Hive; basic Linux commands are needed throughout, and basic Java only for the MapReduce section.

Course Description
The objective of this course is to walk you through step by step of all the core components in Hadoop but more importantly make Hadoop learning experience easy and fun.
By enrolling in this course you can also get free access to our multi-node Hadoop training cluster so you can try out what you learn right away in a real multi-node distributed environment.
ABOUT INSTRUCTOR(S)
We are a group of Hadoop consultants who are passionate about Hadoop and Big Data technologies. 4 years ago when we were looking for Big Data consultants to work in our own projects we did not find qualified candidates because the big data industry was very new and hence we set out to train qualified candidates in Big Data ourselves giving them a deep and real world insights in to Hadoop.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS COURSE
In the first section you will learn about what is big data with examples. We will discuss the factors to consider when considering whether a problem is big data problem or not. We will talk about the challenges with existing technologies when it comes to big data computation. We will breakdown the Big Data problem in terms of storage and computation and understand how Hadoop approaches the problem and provide a solution to the problem.
In the HDFS, section you will learn about the need for another file system like HDFS. We will compare HDFS with traditional file systems and its benefits. We will also work with HDFS and discuss the architecture of HDFS.
In the MapReduce section you will learn about the basics of MapReduce and phases involved in MapReduce. We will go over each phase in detail and understand what happens in each phase. Then we will write a MapReduce program in Java to calculate the maximum closing price for stock symbols from a stock dataset.
In the next two sections, we will introduce you to Apache Pig & Hive. We will try to calculate the maximum closing price for stock symbols from a stock dataset using Pig and Hive.

More detailed level explanation on writables, why we use them, when to use them, how they are in other programming languages; Also details on instances in AWS and meanings of different terminologies used. These things would be additionally helpful for beginners.

I really loved the course. It is well organised and precisely explained the concepts very well. I am to new Hadoop and this course really made me comfortable to switch to Big Data. I am also expecting some topics from HBase in the course which is currently not part of this course. Hopefully it would be added in future so that we can also get benefited from it. Cheers !!

A great tutorial. I have been listening to the videos several times. Lucid, clear with a comfortable pace. Best is the access to the AWS for the students enrolled and try out some of the commands. Very rich experience for a very low fee. Highly recommended.

For a free course, this definitely deserves a 5 star rating. I would have loved to have been able to move my own jar to the cluster in order to execute my first Hadoop MR job, I guess I'll have to go premium to be able to do that :) Even though the Hadoop in Real World developer course is pretty pricey, I am definitely considering it. Thank you for this course!

I am surprised to see the knowledge of the instructor on the subject and equally amazed of his capability to share the knowledge. I have no whatsoever background on database and even than I was able to make full sense of every statement that has been explained by the instructor. Kudos to him.

A wonderful Hadoop starter/beginner course... in very simple language. THE BEST hadoop beginner course that anyone can find. I loved the examples quoted, that made it very simple to understand the overall concept. I would very strongly recommend this course to anyone trying to get into HADOOP world. Can SPARK be part of the Hadoop Developer course ?

Course content is very useful. And the way its explained is awesome. It starts from basic and slowly its taken to the subject with real time relations. I am able to grasp and understand things as a beginner. Now i have brought hadoop in real world course. I liked this course thank you so much.

The course was well formulated. Although it was an introductory course, hdfs was given a good coverage. I would rate it as 5 if there was more coverage given to mappers and reducers. More context on where hdfs fits in the amazon's eco system. But a good course nevertheless.

Hi Team, Being am from oracle database back ground doesn't have enough idea about Hadoop, After watching the starter course I have come to know about what is hadoop and its architecture. Example given in the course are awesome.. I never had such instructor to explain the concepts in clean and simple. Good luck Thanks

Instructors pace of teaching is great for entry level learning. The lessons are organize step by step in learning the fundamentals. One of the course goal is to make one survive in the real world hadoop environment. the only rant i have is the transcript. lots of words are mispelled which can cause confusion or harder for students to follow.
