What you will learn

  • By the end of this course you will have a systematic process approach and all the necessary tools needed to begin your journey as a SQL Server performance tuner.
  • In this course we will define our performance tuning objectives before we dive head first into tuning. What is our end goal? What steps are we going to take to arrive at this goal? Our end goal needs to be realistic and measureable.
  • Let’s define them right now. Your goal be the end of the course will be speed up data retrieval on the worst performing queries by at least 30%.
  • Secondly, your goal will be to reduce system stress on either the IO subsystem, memory or cpu by 20%.

Thank you reviewers for your kind feedback.

This course focuses on making SQL Server more performant.

SQL Server is like a high performance sports car. Anyone can drive it but put it in the hands of a skilled performance tuner and you've just gone from average to incredible.

No one wants an average performing system and with the KNOWLEDGE acquired from THIS COURSE your performance tuning acumen won't be average either.

This course will give YOU the foundation to become a skilled PERFORMANCE TUNER.

WE will start by building a baseline. How can you measure YOUR success without knowing how poorly the system was before you arrived?

Baselines give us a before and after snapshot of the system we are going to tune.

Once thought of as an art, performance tuning is nothing more than a series of processes that seek to accomplish TWO basic goals.

The FIRST one is to increase the response time for a given transaction or set of transactions.

The SECOND one is reduce resource consumption. On the surface this sounds simple but nothing could be further from the truth.

A database is a collection of objects. The most fundamental and most important is the table object. Users interact with tables via transactions. Most online transaction processing databases are read and write heavy. We put data into to our tables or INSERT it and we read that data or SELECT it.

Let's use an online ordering system as an example. I need a product and I've found it on x(dot)com. Before I can order it I need to give x(dot)com a few things. My name, address, product I'm ordering and money of course. All this information is INSERTED into various tables. Once I've provided all the necessary information someone at x(dot)has to SELECT or read that data so my order can be filled.

Imagine for a minute that I make several attempts to provide x(dot)com with my name, address… etc. However, after three attempts the information can't be saved to the database and I receive multiple errors. Most people won't try three times unless the product can't be purchased somewhere else. Most users will look elsewhere after that second failure.

This course WILL provide YOU with the foundation necessary to ensure data can be saved and retrieved so the database will have an organic flow of transactions.

ENROLL now. Let's get started!!!

I've worked with databases for over two decades. I've worked for or consulted with over 50 different companies as a full time employee or consultant. Fortune 500 as well as several small to mid-size companies. Some include: Georgia Pacific, SunTrust, Reed Construction Data, Building Systems Design, NetCertainty, The Home Shopping Network, SwingVote, Atlanta Gas and Light and Northrup Grumman.

Over the last five years I've transitioned to the exciting world of applied machine learning.  I'm excited to show you what I've learned and help you move into one of the single most important fields in this space.

Experience, education and passion

I learn something almost every day. I work with insanely smart people. I'm a voracious learner of all things SQL Server and I'm passionate about sharing what I've learned. My area of concentration is performance tuning. SQL Server is like an exotic sports car, it will run just fine in anyone's hands but put it in the hands of skilled tuner and it will perform like a race car.

Mike is very knowledgeable and really show relevant information for the job, that you would use on a daily basis. I would like to contribute with two suggestions on the course. 1) Please review the scripts shared in the zip file. some are not matching the description, for instance the one named PRWaitStatScript contains the unused indexes script. Others are missing (but i was able to copy them out from the screen using google lens or from another course of yours, so no problem). 2) I felt like a little explanation on what are you trying to show on each lecture in the beginning of that lecture would help us understand better. There were times when it wasn't clear at the begenning what it is about and i had to watch it over just so i could follow the logical steps. Keep it up man, i'll certainly do more of your courses in the future. You seem to be the most knowledgeable tutor on SQL Server i've found so far.

The explanation is too fast and sometimes hard to understand. The quiz quetions are not very testing and an explanation is missing. Almost every question must be answered by "true" or "false", however, some questions should be ansered by "it depends" first. For example, after 10 days you can safely remove unused indexes. In practise I think this is hardly measurable. 40 days is more safe but even after that there's no guarantee. In the end, this course has added value to my missing knowlegde.

This is a course for people with DBA access on a database who wants to do performance tuning. The course is absolutely great for the topics it deals with, however I was looking for a course that had detailed explanations on query plan analysis. The tuning focus of the course is more on instance level, which I admit is very important. To run the scripts attached you would need access to the sys tables. There are however projects, like the one I work now where we are not given any access to the sys tables, let alone running stored procedures on them. Anyways I loved the content of the course. Requesting Mike to create a course on query plan analysis, plan objects, index strategies that can be applied without having the user to get sys priveleges and sp_whoisactive scripts.

Being quite the neophyte to performance tuning, I learned a whole lot of things from Mike's course. Mike touched on all the basics and a lot of things I've never really heard about or understand until I saw those things practiced in Mike's course. Overall, i wish Mike would have touched on some of the basics of query tuning as well since he's done such an excellent job with Server and Instance tuning. However, I still feel like this was an excellent course.

This is an excellent course; the material is broken up into small chunks (videos of about 2 to 5 mins long), and is therefore easily digestible. At first, the material seemed to be out of order, but then realized, it is presented in a very clever way, to give you a better understanding of the subjects, as they all relate to each other. I have now improved my SQL Server Tuning skills, and my job as a DBA is now going to be easier. I have been able to put these skills to work already, in my existing role as a SQL Server DBA!

My ultimate goal is to become a top-level query and performance tuner. To this end, I've read numerous books, articles, and blog posts on performance and query tuning as well as watched various pluralsight courses as well as youtube videos. Although the resources I've studied were helpful, none of them mapped out a clear and definitive performance tuning methodology like this course. After taking this course not only will you have a sound performance tuning strategy and be well equipped to establish baselines and apply performance tweaks on your servers, but more importantly, you'll have a strong performance tuning foundation and be poised to take your new skills and understanding to the next level. At such a low price, this course is a no-brainer whether you're a junior or senior DBA. I'm so impressed with the course that I bought three additional courses that Mike teaches. Thanks for putting this course together Mike!

I've been watching for quite a while now... I still don't know how to tie a problem to a solution. I can add files to tempdb to decrease latching issues and I can turn on optimize for AdHoc .... this is not going to make me a "World class" DBA any time soon. I am at 43 of 55 items complete. The remaining 12 items had better be stunners, or I have wasted my money. I have taken a course with Paul Randal and Kimberley Tripp. It was way more in depth than this, unfortunately it was also too much too fast to absorb it all. I was hoping this course would allow for a slower pace and more hands on to pick up all that I missed. So far, I am not impressed. I'm done, and I doubt I will take another course.

This was just the course I have been waiting for. Mike's demos and scripts have helped me become a confident tuner. The best thing about this course was that I was able to improve our server performance straightaway. Load generator was a highlight of this course as I was not aware of this earlier. Thank you Mike and I look forward to seeing many courses like this. Best regards, Jyo

I already have a great deal of DBA related experienced in the real world. What this course did for me was help me establish a model, and strategy for database tuning and performance monitoring. Also, this course has a great deal of useful tools I'm pretty sure you won't already have. Mike is brilliant and gets straight to the point. This course has helped me further my goals, and establish my foundations in what will be a lifetime of successes. Thanks Mike, you're the best! Sincerely, Laurence - If you are a DBA, then this course is definitely for you!

As much as I wish I could find a course that would magically fill me with the skills and knowledge to effectively administer and tune SQL Server databases, such classes are nowhere to be found because every server and every database is different. So while this course did not wave the magic wand and immediately turn me into a perforamance tuning guru it does a great job of driving home the art and science behind it. I'm still not the sql tuning wizard that I aspire to be but now I know much of the science behind it and I know how to approach the task. Mike has provided a number of scripts that will enable me to effectively troubleshoot and remediate performance issues. He's also provided me with tried and proven methods, scripts and tools with which I can monitor database server instances effectively. I know that it will still be quite some time before I have mastered all of these skills but I'm certain that this course, as well as Mike's other course on sp_whoisactive, have given me exactly what I need to achieve my goals. If you desire to learn effective sql performance tuning methodology this is the course for you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mike, I really appreciate it.
