Course Description

Do you need to interview someone but don’t know where to start? Do you want to create great interviews that attract audiences and listeners? Are you a podcaster, blogger, journalist, or academic researcher looking to improve your interviewing skills?

The interview is a staple of podcasting and journalism today, but it's often badly done. Most interviewers are making key mistakes that are limiting the potential of their interviews. In this course, learn to illuminate a new topic, tell someone's amazing story, and stand out from the millions of interview recordings on the Internet – without ever having to go to journalism school.

Learn those problems – and how to correct them – in this course taught by an experienced journalist and writing professor.

The course moves logically through the interview process, including these important topics:

  • Preparation to make sure you are respected as a interviewer;
  • Which recording methods to use, as the technological medium can affect you and your interviewee;
  • How to reduce the inevitable nerves that come with doing interviews;
  • The importance of using open-ended questions to get people to open up and tell you fascinating stories; and,
  • How to write up your interviews into blog posts and newspaper or magazine articles that are coherent and interesting to read.

The course also explains the importance of using interview recordings to create an online  following of fans, which is vital for marketing a product or service.

If you're new to interviewing, the course also provides information on microphones and recording software to get started on interviewing people in-person and online.

This is a good overview of what interviews can be in a journalistic context. It doesn't go very deep. It's a good reminder, but it won't make you a terrific writer, nor does it explain in detail how to decode your interviewees.

By Lyssa Klein on 2/23/2024

Easy to understand and follow and covered fundamental topics and techniques that form the basis of a good interview.

By Stephanie Ross on 4/14/2023

Could have focused more on the interviews you have to do, rather than "only interview people you want to interview." And tips for those challenging must-do interviews.

By Shawna Brezny on 10/1/2020

This is a VERY good match - I need inspiration to be an amazing facilitator, and the instructor's stories are relevant and succinct. It is definitely sparking my creativity which is exactly what I was hoping for. I really like that he kept his recommendations for tools and apps to a minimum, and are things he actually uses. And I love his recommendations of videos to watch on what to do and what not to do to highlight his lessons.

By Lisamarie A. on 5/14/2020

I'm enjoying it very much. The information is interesting and I'm motivated to follow along.

By Gemma on 3/30/2020

Great course with some valuable information. I definitely feel more confident in developing interview questions and having a good narrative structure in my podcasts

By Louise Fremder on 2/2/2019

Yes I feel this is what I want to do, but have been lacking the confidence to take the first step.

By Sean Smith on 10/21/2018

This course is just common sense. I don't feel like I learned anything. Additionally the instructor speaks in a monotonous monotone voice which makes it easy to have your mind wander. In short, it's boring and not informative or helpful.

By Theresa Neumeister on 4/26/2018

It provides a good overview for everybody interested in interviews or podcasting. More examples, details, methods, and advise is missing.

By Bruce Ritter on 12/10/2017

The presentation gave food for thought. The information was easy to understand and engaging overall.
