Your teachers, Keppie Coutts and Ben Romalis, are both professional artist and songwriters who have collectively over 40 years of experience writing, performing and teaching at Universities and Colleges around the world.

No matter where you start a song idea—with lyrics or music first—there is a step-by-step process you can follow to turn it into a finished song.

This songwriting course is radically practical!

Our singular aim with this course is to show you how to take your initial inspiration and turn it into a finished song - every time.

We take you step by step through not one—but two!—different songwriting processes:

  • starting with lyrics first, and

  • starting with music first

At every point along the way, we reveal the thought processes and creative decisions essential to the songwriting process, demonstrate how to do it, and how to fill your tool belt with techniques, methods, strategies, and processes that you can apply to your songwriting every time.

By the end of this course, not only will your tool belt be stocked; you’ll have a plan and a method for finishing your songs - all of them.

Why Take This Course?

  • Carefully curated playlists of over 50 song examples that demonstrate key concepts.

They are also the founders of the popular ‘How to Write Songs’ YouTube Channel, with a hell-bent mission to help people become better songwriters.

Keppie has taught songwriting at the Berklee College of Music, for Berklee Online, the Australian College of the Arts, the Open Academy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as well as at the Songwriting School of Los Angeles. Keppie’s songs appear in major network television shows, and most recently, Keppie was commissioned by Penguin Random House to write one of the first full albums of original work to appear in a major audiobook release (Mothertongues, 2022).

Keppie’s “voice is beautiful, just gorgeous. She’s like a contemporary female Nick Drake…and her guitar playing is so beautiful, so raw…” —John Mayer

“Coutts’ songs marry soul and folk so gorgeously, you’ll cheer when they get stuck on endless repeat on the jukebox in your brain.” —The Boston Globe

Ben Romalis has composed music for large companies such as Adobe and Cathay Pacific, and also composes music for games, televisions and advertising. As a songwriter, he is a founding member of the internationally touring alt-country band, The Green Mohair Suits, which has released 4 studio albums to date. Ben is the founder and head producer at Silamor Studios, a boutique studio specializing in video and audio production.

“Green Mohair Suits make music for pleasure. Our pleasure. If you don’t find yourself smiling, tapping or joining in on one of those harmonies, you’re leading a very sad life.” —Sydney Morning Herald

Ben lectures across a range of subjects including Songwriting, Production and Composition for Screen. He has vast experience designing and delivering workshops on creativity and innovation, as well as mentoring and coaching other industry professionals to help them realise their potential.

Kind Words From Students

“Keppie and Ben offer invaluable insights into the construction of melodies, each contributing their own unique observations. I experienced many 'light bulb' moments...I highly recommend this to anyone interested in furthering their songwriting and expanding their musical palette.” —Stephen Varhegyi

“I thought I had song mapping down packed, but Keppie showed me ways to take further steps to get even clearer about the direction the lyrics can go. Keppie really shed light on verse development and I’ll be applying this to my songs in progress to finally finish them!”

great teachers very clear explanations and great information. came to them from youtube where they also post great stuff! room for improvement for the price course is brief coming in at 2 hours. Their other course on songwriting contains the exercises more in-depth for what they outlined in this course. so really you have to spend double for both courses. I feel that maybe they could be one course at a slightly reduced price point. and other notes would be nice to have some more referencing for further reading and listening at the end of each chapter. i know that Pat Patterons work is a source be good to have some book recommendations and song recommendations to continue what this course outlines and deepen. other than that love the teachers and the content. so happy customer

Your video lectures are so good! You have a beautiful way of demystifying the writing process and braking it down into practical steps! But most of all I feel like I was equipped and walked away with actual usable tools that I can implement! The only thing I found a little disappointing was the "printable recourses" I would have loved to have more comprehensive documents / templates for things like rhyming schemes, song structor, etc... but overall I found this to be a wonderful resource!

The interesting point is that I find that I already do a lot of what is being taught, but it was never codified or laid out - it just 'happened.' The point of songwriting or copywriting or any other creative activity is letting a natural flow happen and when that flow works, then looking and seeing what was actually done and then putting it into some format, without being rigid. So, then it can be used, repeated, debugged, enhanced and then taught. I think there is a point where I believe Keppie said something like, 'it's not all about inspiration - there's a craft here to learn.' This is very true, but that craft is (I believe) take from a natural 'inspiration' that I believe we all have to a greater or lesser degree. That gift or ability can then be noted and then not lost. It can then be taught... inspiration then becomes a tool - because we all have that spark of creativity. The craft them becomes how to use that spark to create something. How to complete a cycle of action - i.e. start it, move through it's steps, then complete it to a finished product. So, going over this, over and over and letting it sink in enhances the creative process that I have already experienced, I see how they have cataloged it and how to enhance it. Very excellent experience so far - I've written and rewritten songs during this course so far - the ideas flow here. So, this is all very helpful. A.B.

Decided to do the course after discovering and watching some 'How To Write Songs' videos on YouTube. I was particularly interested in how to improve my lyric writing skills and tackling it in a structured and methodical way. This course ticked all the boxes for me and has provided a tool box of ideas and suggestions that I know will make a difference in my approach to writing. It is jam packed with explanations and examples and put over in such an enthusiastic and delightful way. Well done and thank you Keppie and Ben.

Well done coarse showing how a song is created lyric first and music first. Well put together and lots of helps and ideas along the way introduce contrast into your song to keep the listeners interest. This is a coarse about the song not production. Once you have a good sound then you can move on to production. A good production of a bad song is not a win. A good song with a good production is a win win. Great coarse and not long on time. Just right.

Although this course is short, it's one of the most helpful, clear, easy songwriting courses I've found. It's very practical, and I would recommend it to anyone. It's worth noting that it doesn't delve into some important parts of the actual poetry or word-smithing of songwriting, so I would recommend also getting Pat Pattison's "Writing Better Lyrics" as a more general supplement for the practicals found here.

By Gillian B. on 12/26/2022

This is a remarkable course. It's short and efficient, but never feels rushed, and in its short span Keppie and Benny show two completely different methods for writing a song, start to finish, with plenty of detail and illustrations, and step-by-step instructions for what you should do as you go along. Incredibly helpful and illuminating!

By Justin Davies on 10/29/2022

Keppie and Benny work so well together to deliver a thoroughly engaging step by step process to writing songs. They are clearly both wonderful musicians, as well as great educators, and the way they bounce off each other works so well. I've really enjoyed the process and will enjoy going back over the content as I keep working on writing songs. Thanks so much Keppie and Benny, love your work!!

By Garry McCandless on 9/30/2022

A truly useful course! The class gave me specific ways to get better at song writing and, by using the examples of the two songs, showed specifically how to actually use them. I liked that the class was so focused, and that it was it was based in the real life examples of the two songs. Sometimes you can watch a long video or read a book and not come away with anything that you then actually use. I found, after the course, that I was able to remember and then use right away two of the methods taught .
