Our take
Based on the ratings of 4,597 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Robert Hean's course is a short introduction to HR and people data, about 3.1 hours across 65 lectures. It covers where HR data comes from, common gotchas like nicknames and abbreviations, how metrics such as headcount, turnover, engagement and diversity are calculated, and how to present the results to leadership. It is aimed at people new to an HR team, plus managers curious about what the data says. The listing says plainly that HR data scientists and senior HR leaders are not the audience.
Reviewers like the short, clear videos and the practical exercises, and several call Hean's explanations easy to follow. One said it works as a refresher on Excel and Google Sheets, and another did not expect that much spreadsheet training. That matches the syllabus, where the spreadsheet basics section is the longest at 70 minutes. The complaints are small but real. One reviewer wanted more than two Excel formulas and a simple pivot table, another found little informative about HR data, and one noticed the audio volume jumping around.
The rating is 4.5 from 4,597 reviews, and more than 4,000 of those are four or five stars. About 20,000 students have enrolled, and the last update was in August 2026, so it is current. Expect a first look, not a deep analytics course. It is a good, quick start for newcomers to HR. Anyone already comfortable in spreadsheets may find the middle of the course slow.
Pros
- Short, clear videos that reviewers find easy to follow
- Works through headcount, turnover, engagement, diversity and recruiting metrics hands on in Excel and Sheets
- Shows how to present HR data to stakeholders and partner with other teams on data quality
- Updated in August 2026, with six quizzes and two assignments for practice
Cons
- Thin on depth: one reviewer found only a couple of Excel formulas and a simple pivot table
- Some reviewers report uneven audio volume and a few confusing Excel explanations
- Not for HR data scientists or senior HR leaders, and only a first pass at metrics
I learned a lot of detail about how to organize data to report on Metrics. I did not expect it to contain such a high level of Excel and Google Docs training.
Beginner level fits new HR staff and managers who already know basic spreadsheet functions but have no analytics background.

I really enjoyed this course, especially because of the way Robert delivers the content. His explanations are clear, practical, and easy to follow. Beyond the technical aspects of HR analytics, he provides valuable insights on how to measure data effectively, present findings to stakeholders, and communicate metrics in a meaningful way. I also appreciated his emphasis on the importance of HR metrics and building strong relationships with colleagues and business stakeholders. Overall, it was an informative and relevant course for HR professionals looking to become more data-driven.

I struggled to find relevant practical cost effective courses that dived into the professional development areas of HR that I wanted to do. So far I am enjoying this course with the hopes of being able to use the practical skills in my career going forward.

This the first course I've taken on udemy and I'm happy about that. The instructor is very thorough and clear in his explanations. I'm hoping other courses are taught this way.
By Anonymized User on 10/30/2025
It was very insightful however this course is slightly too long and hard to remain engaged the entire time. I would like more videos that show you how to do something rather than showing a formula that ahs already been done.

I’ve taken several trainings on Udemy, but this is the first one where the instructor began by explaining how to use Udemy effectively as part of the introduction — something I found very helpful, as I learned several things I didn’t know before. The course also provided great insights into HR data and was very useful overall.
