Our take
Based on the ratings of 37,959 students and a sample of their written reviews, the syllabus, the course as of October 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
Edwin Diaz's beginner course is a gentle first pass at HTML and CSS that ends with a real site online. The syllabus shows 81 lectures across nine sections and about 8.8 hours of video, starting with page structure and basic CSS, then building a small site, adding a PHP contact form, and putting it on a live host. Later sections on a modern layout and CSS frameworks were added over time. It suits people who have never opened a text editor and want a friendly guide rather than a reference manual.
Reviewers like the tone. One says it feels like sitting next to a friend while he codes; another says he explains why, not just what. That same four-star reviewer was pleased it covers Flexbox and Grid. The complaints are about pace and depth. A one-star review says he never defines what a tag is and promised a glossary that never appeared. A two-star review says the later modules jump between ideas fast enough to need constant rewinding. Another reviewer wanted an outline of the whole course up front. Even a four-star fan calls it a broad overview where each topic needs more practice afterward.
With about 374,000 students and a 4.3 rating from nearly 38,000 reviews, this is a very popular pick, and an update in October 2024 keeps it reasonably current. Sitting beside Build Responsive Real-World Websites with HTML and CSS on our HTML list, it is best treated as a warm-up rather than the whole meal. For anyone testing whether web development is for them, it is a safe, paid first step. Anyone who wants depth should budget for a second course.
Pros
- Builds an actual site and shows how to put it online, with a PHP contact form along the way
- Reviewers say Edwin explains why he writes each line, not just what to type
- Warm, over-the-shoulder teaching style that one student compares to learning from a friend
- Updated October 2024, and the syllabus includes newer sections on modern layouts and CSS frameworks
Cons
- Later modules jump between ideas quickly; a two-star reviewer needed constant rewinding to keep up
- A broad overview rather than depth; one reviewer says basics like what a tag is are never really defined
- No course outline up front, and a promised glossary reportedly never appears
Edwin is an excellent instructor. It seemed like he enjoyed teaching this class. It felt like I was working side-by-side with a friend, looking over his shoulder.
Listed as All Levels but written for total beginners; only a web browser is required, and anyone past the basics will find it thin.

Edwin is an excellent instructor. It seemed like he enjoyed teaching this class. It felt like I was working side-by-side with a friend, looking over his shoulder. This is the intro class I would recommend to anyone who wanted to learn about building a website and learning HTML and CSS. FWIW, I used Visual Studio Code to complete the class and I did not put my website online. Still, I felt the section about going online useful to watch ; ) Thanks, Edwin, and I look forward to another class with you!

This course covers a lot of helpful introductory material for anyone who is completely new to HTML and CSS. It works well as a general overview and gives you a solid sense of how websites are structured and built. That said, it’s important to understand that many of the topics introduced here require further study and practice to fully master. This course is more focused on providing a broad foundation rather than going deep into each concept. Because of that, it’s especially well-suited for beginners who want to dip their toes into web development and see if it’s something they’d like to pursue further. If you already have some prior experience, you may find parts of the course a bit basic. Personally, I was hoping to see more examples of different CSS and HTML structures, as well as more emphasis on their modular and reusable nature, which can really strengthen long-term development skills. Overall, I would rate this course 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a solid starting point for newcomers and a good first step into web development, as long as you’re prepared to continue learning beyond the course.

Perfect start for beginners! Review: "I entered this course knowing absolutely nothing about coding, and now I feel confident building my own websites. Teacher explains concepts very clearly and doesn't just type code—they explain why we are doing it. I really appreciated that the course covered modern techniques like Flexbox and Grid. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to master HTML and CSS!"

The instructor wanted the students to learn and he was very enthusiastic to share his knowledge. He taught both the content of the subject and how the developer tackle everyday programming task. He showed how to code and talked out every step he was doing. Student can pick up tips and tricks he was using to to solve the problem. Felt like he present the kind of problems/error you faced when writing code, and how to actually fixed them. Learn a lot from developer perspective.

When Edwin mentioned that he will be using Brackets editor, I was a bit afraid, because I had bad experiences with using Brackets. But I shut that voice in my head down. I bravely went into this course. In this short course there were ups and downs. But I learned and I understanding coding and using Brackets much better. A side note I have a better understanding with files and folders as well. The only problem I had sometimes, is when Edwin would navigate through his computer too quickly. I would rewind to see what he did. Otherwise, the biggest lesson here is, if you go out of your comfort zone, you may surprise yourself. Edwin's course is really good if you are starting out.

Very good tutorial. Well organized and went over all the basics to create a good starter website with many tips to expand on our own. As the course went on the lectures got a bit confusing by jumping around to much and also the details became less when explaining what was being done.
