Course Description
Are you a developer who wants to be able to deploy and manage your own servers? Perhaps you want to start working in server side development and need to understand the back end environment. Maybe you're interested in starting a career in server administration and want to understand the fundamentals?
The fact is if you're a web developer, or web technologist you need to understand server administration. After you complete this course you will be able to independently provision your own web servers, and deploy salable web applications that can be shared globally. You'll learn the tools of the trade used by server administrators, and how to properly secure your web servers.
This is a course about DOING-- not simply watching an instructor. In the very first chapter you'll hit the ground running as you create and configure your first server. During the course you'll master command interface tools like NANO and VIM. You'll examine package managers and understanding the LAMP stack.
This course also prepares you to work with GIT code repositories and the popular mySQL database. You'll also learn the important server administration skills of working with security and logs.
When you enroll in this class you'll join a community of learners led by LearnToProgram's Henry Quinn. If you'd like to add server administration to your list of skills, we'll look forward to seeing you in class.

Very good course for the newbie. Some explanation at the start of why to use centos over other OS would be useful. A session on using python in the lamp stack might be helpful for those of us who dont want to learn php And finally some more on trying understanding the various log files e.g. auth . But exellent course.

I am a web app developer but I do not have a lot of server admin experience. I made some mistakes with installing and configuring some of the third party tools. This caused me substantial delays in finishing the course. I recognize that the instructor cannot address all errors, but maybe some general comments and a screen or two could be helpful. But I really enjoyed the course and I am putting my new knowledge to work in the real world immediately. The instructor clearly has a great grasp on his subject.

It would have been more effective if you did not require a Digital Ocean account just to start your course, it comes off looking like just a scam for Digital Ocean even though there is a lot of good information in the course. I am sure that you lost many students at this point. Overall this is a very good course.

Henry is a very engaging instructor. I am truly new to server administration, but now I've got good insights into these topics, such creating and administrating an ocean account. I am optimistic, that I will understand everything I need to maintain my own servers and probably host own websites. Thank you, Henry Quinn.

This course is great. I've always wanted to run my own server, and I had no idea prior to this course exactly how to undertake something that big. Henry is good at explaining concepts, and when I got stuck, he resolved my issues within 12 hours after submitting a question for help. I would definitely take any other courses Henry offers.

The instructor seems very knowledgeable about the topic. The videos are just right in time (5-10 minutes) so as not to overwhelm you. The instructor is also very enthusiastic about the topic he is teaching so that helps. There are labs included so you can practice what has been taught. Concepts are repeated at intervals to reinforce your knowledge. Overall its a great course.

The content is great and is presented well. The instructor speaks clearly and it's easy to follow along. He jumps right in...I found myself creating my own server in no time! The mixed presentation formats kept me from becoming bored or mesmerized. The material is still clear and easy to follow , even if you speed it up to 1.25x or 1.5x because you're a quick study! Glad I'm taking the course!

It has proven to be a good step by step introduction into the world of server administration, walking through each step and actually replicating the steps helps expose the inner workings and tools needed to successfully navigate the process. Great presentation by the instructor, easy to follow along and not in a daunting way. Great introductory class, covered most of the important basics to get you going administering your own server. Well done Henry, kudos.

Overall a great course. I was able to get my server up and running and secured. With the knowledge learned here and a quick search on Google I was able to upgrade my PHP to 7.X instead of the default 5.X. Overall, a decent overview of setting up a remote server via DigitalOcean, adding the necessary services and managing them. There is a section on PuTty that is incomplete.
