Our take

Based on the ratings of 855 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in November 2019. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a short slide walkthrough: 13 lectures and about 2.1 hours across six sections. It starts with data warehousing, adds a quick SQL refresher and an ETL overview, then spends two sections on ETL testing and test scenarios. The listing says intermediate and asks for SQL and Informatica experience, but the content reads like a first introduction. It was published in 2018 and last updated in November 2019, so expect an older, fairly static lesson.

Reviewers who liked it call it a clear overview for a beginner and a handy refresher for people already in the field. One said they expected a product demo and found real warehousing basics instead. The Startup Central Co., with Tuhina Mehta, gets credit from some for slow, easy delivery, while others find the accent hard to follow. Complaints repeat: audio that cuts out or sounds choppy, slides running off screen, a query that compares source to source instead of source to target, missing resources, and no hands-on work.

The ratings are split in a telling way. Of 855 ratings, 265 are five stars and 260 are four, but 111 are one or two stars, many of them citing the missing PowerCenter coverage or the poor audio. Treat it as a quick conceptual primer and you will probably be fine. If the tool is the point, look elsewhere.

Best forBeginners who want the vocabulary and a list of ETL test scenarios before an interview or a first testing role.
Skip it ifYou want to watch tests built in Informatica PowerCenter or practice SQL on real data.

Pros

  • Short at about two hours, so it works as a fast refresher before an interview
  • Starts from data warehousing and SQL basics, so a complete beginner gets the groundwork first
  • Reviewers say the delivery is slow and clear, easy to follow for a complete beginner
  • Data quality and data accuracy sections give concrete scenarios to test

Cons

  • Informatica PowerCenter is in the title but never shown, according to several reviewers
  • Slides only, with no demos, quizzes or exercises despite the promise of practice
  • Audio drops out or sounds choppy for some, and a few slides and queries are cut off or wrong
it introduces the basic concepts of warehousing, which is really value adding for both beginners (as fundamental knowledge) and also a good refresher for people who has been in the field for long.
Carson Yeung, a student

Listed as intermediate, but it really suits beginners. Reviewers say the ETL tool in the requirements is never used.

Course Description

COURSE OBJECTIVE
The Primary objective of this course to make you familiar with ETL testing concepts.

The course starts with data warehousing concepts, as that is required before you start testing the data in data warehouse.

You should be well versed is SQL (RDBMS query language), hence this tutorial has a brief introduction to SQL and normalization to structure data in a database.

You will learn how to test the loaded data by ETL process after transformations. After you finish the tutorial, you can start creating a set of test cases for your ETL mapping and build your own queries to execute them.

All sections of the course will have relevant exercises for you to do, so you can practice your new skills.

WHAT IS ETL TESTING?
ETL stands for Extract-Transform-Load. It is a process of loading data from the source system to the data warehouse.
ETL testing is done to ensure that the data loaded from the source system to a data warehouse (after transformations), is accurate.

TOP 3 BENEFITS OF LEARNING ETL TESTING

  1.  ETL testing professionals are in high demand in the market. Tools like Informatica PowerCenter, IBM Infosphere Information Server, Oracle data Integrator, etc. are in huge demand in the Industry and there is no sign of this trend should stop growing anytime soon.
  2. ETL testing Jobs are generally well payed and include many benefits.
  3. Learning ETL testing will improve your data analytical skills.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I would say it is "easy". But if you have the right knowledge (like this course) and SQL experience, it should not be much of a problem to get a good ETL testing job in various companies. The future of ETL Testing is very bright. There will always be a need to store data for analysis, for any organizations that has large amount of transactions.

What skills are required before I opt for ETL testing?

It is a very good course for you if 1. you are about to have an interview and nee quick tips. 2. you are new to all this and need a quick and crisp explanation. 3. Its short, to the point and simple as it should be. Really enjoyed learning most of the concepts. Instructor also touches some of the practical cases and potential errors one might run into, which is quite insightful to know. Defiantly, it is worth watching for a quick refresher. Course is just a refresher or an in depth introduction. No case study is being solved step by step however there are references from the practical examples while explanation.

Good global overview in a short time ! this course gives sense to fix the scope. The explanations are fine and the teacher talks slowly for understanding ! many thanks

By Carson Yeung on 3/24/2021

I was thinking it is a product demo. but it introduces the basic concepts of warehousing, which is really value adding for both beginners (as fundamental knowledge) and also a good refresher for people who has been in the field for long.

By Sandeep Pattar on 3/6/2021

The content of the course and explanation could have been much better. There was no hands on in the course. No examples were shown using the tool, everything was theoretical. Session 10: Data Quality slides were off the screen. Query was in correct in Data Accuracy Testing.

By Sujay Chandrashekar on 2/21/2021

This course is excellent for a beginner tester. Adding few more examples on OLTP and OLAP with basic data would have help the users to understand the concepts even better. Good job team! Keep it up and improve on further.

By Sapna Chauhan on 1/30/2021

Not so good till now, as presenter did not review her own content before presenting, given example for SCD type are having wrong end date, where start date (april 2018) is greater than end date(march2018). expected start date always be less than end date.

By Fahim Hy on 1/13/2021

This is just a presentation of a bunch of slides at hand. Many errors and misinformation can be found in the slides in itself. No practical view of ETL or its tools such as Informatica Power Center. The title is completely for click bait.

By Todd Smith on 12/31/2020

Several slides in the Data Quality section 10 was off the screen. Few slides had several misspelled words. Speaker was slow at times speaking. Also, there were errors in queries such as comparing source to source instead of source to target in Data Accuracy section. I expected the material not to be so repetitive between sections with too much overlap. Course could be a lot shorter than 2 hours.

By Atul tripathi on 12/28/2018

Not very great. Example with tables wouldhave been helpful. Many points were helpful for knowledge wise and less understanding wise . However Unable to feel even a lil of handson or even picturise anything. Its more like a reading session.

By Elin Rasmussen on 4/16/2018

Working through the course. I like that the instructor is a woman. She seems very competent and I like here style. Content is rather informative, although I don't quite have the overview just yet of the ETL process, but I'm guessing I will once I'm done with the lessons.
