Course Description

Games should be exciting, full of secrets and special features! Let me take you step by step though my creative process and show you how I build unique game worlds for players to have adventures in. I will explain every line of code as we write it. Let's practise object oriented programming and use HTML, CSS and plain vanilla JavaScript to build a game. There will be no frameworks and no libraries, because we want deep understanding of how things work under the hood.

Let's explore an alien planet and it's mechanical life forms in a steampunk themed 2D side scroller. We will learn how to implement:

  • Sprite animation

  • Parallax backgrounds

  • Collision detection

  • Power ups

  • Different enemy types that alter the gameplay

  • and many other features of 2D game development

If you are a beginner front end web developer curious about game development, creative coding & web animation, come join me and learn how to create beautiful visuals for your games, and how to implement unique game features that will make your project stand out. Have fun!

(In this class I am giving away a lot of free game art assets for characters, environments and props. These were created by me or artists I hired, there is no copyright. Feel free to use them for any of your personal projects if you want. )

Hey, I have gifted this course to my 13 year old daughter as a base development , she has finished it but my only complain is that you have not shown them how to execute the code well. The AI system say that your course is the best in the town but now I doubt them . Please help !

Good job! Important, fundamental game developing techniqes are explained in detaill, but sometimes a little bit too fast. Be pepared to rewind and rewatch some sequences. Check out Frank's other courses if you're interested in more game developing techniques like object pooling or physics and watch his youtube videos for his excellent series on particle effects (I really love that one)

Hi, I gotta say that I'm not a newbie in coding in JS but it was my first step in coding a game. Truth be told, really fun! Definitely not a course for beginners in JS but if you're intermediate/advanced in JS and are used to coding in a more traditional way (web development, web apps), coding a game is a lot of fun, and Frank makes it even better, funny guy, super pro, I had a great time, thanks Frank for this adventure! : )

Franks is outrageously gifted with game development, his creativity with his detailed creative explanations of the game sprites, his art and animated sprite components. Frank is unique with his coding skills, ability to quickly code, speak and teach simultaneously. His games are one of a kind. If Frank would start creating mobile versions as well as the desktop versions, this would go over even better. Shalom

Excellent course. Very good teaching, with an excellent description of what is being done and why it is being done this way. However, if the student wants to do each part at the same time, it becomes quite difficult to follow without having to pause and continue. The game running (with or without sound) ends up distracting and taking away focus, especially when the sound is on.

Definitely helps to know JavaScript beforehand. This course is really cool but quite advanced. As long as you have some JavaScript fundamentals, it will be much enjoyable and easier to follow. Really cool course!

The course was really nice and fast paced, for me it was a pretty good refresher with some really nice results at the end (a working game), I would like to ask you about the extra sprites that you mention once the "base game" is done. Could we get more sprites to make other games as well? I am only asking because a video mentioned this.

the course was very informative and easy to understand for someone with a very basic understanding of other programing languages. I specifically appreciate the fact that the creator left in his mistakes and errors and explained how to fix them as this is a very important part of programming. for any beginner I would 100% recommend

Great course and lovely project! I'm a beginner in game development but not in JavaScript; I've learnt quite a bit about object oriented programming, organizing code, and game development steps. The course covers a lot of topics in a brief, compact, easy-to-understand way.

the course is great, what i would have found as a small addition would be a start screen and an end screen with add.eventlistener to start or restart the game. der kurs ist super, was ich als kleine ergänzung gefunden hätte wäre ein startscreen und ein endscreen mit add.eventlistener um das spiel zu starten bzw. neu zu starten.
