Course Description
This course is part of an award-winning training programme — the Skill Up Break Free project won the WCVA/European Social Funds national award in 2017 for making most progress with learners. This is the only structured, modular Guitar Repair Technician training programme available online at this level.
Guitar Setup — How To Set Up Your Guitar is Module 2 in the Guitar Repair Technician series. Together with Module 1 (Maintaining Your Guitar) and Module 3 (Making New Bone Nuts), these modules give you the practical skills to carry out professional guitar repair technician tasks on electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and basses.
This is the only online training programme of its kind. There is no other structured Guitar Repair Technician course available at this level. Guitar repair workshops typically cost £200–£300 per day — this programme gives you the same professional-level training at a fraction of the cost, in your own time, without leaving home.
What you will learn
This module covers the four core tasks that every Guitar Repair Technician carries out during a professional guitar setup:
• Checking and adjusting the truss rod — correctly setting neck relief for playability
• Checking and adjusting the nut action — string height at the headstock end
• Checking and adjusting the bridge action — string height at the body end, across acoustic, electric, and bass guitars
• Setting the intonation — ensuring the guitar plays in tune across the full fretboard
• Identifying and fixing dead notes on the fretboard
• Setting string camber — following the radius of the fretboard
• Balancing pickup volume on electric guitars
What this course covers
• Step-by-step video instruction for every task
• Downloadable PDF guides and checklists — print them and use them at the bench
• Quizzes to check your understanding at every stage
• Covers electric guitars, acoustic guitars, classical guitars, bass guitars, and Floyd Rose systems
• Professional-level measurements and techniques, taught at a pace that works for beginners
• Ask questions directly — support included
Who this course is for
• Guitarists who want to set up and maintain their own instruments
• People looking to work in music shops, guitar repair, or as a guitar technician
• Anyone wanting to save money on professional setups — a standard setup costs £30–£60 per guitar
• Those who want to build an independent income from guitar repair on their own terms and schedule
• Complete beginners — no prior repair experience needed
What learners say

“I wanted to learn how to set up my own guitars, both acoustic and electric. This course was great! It provided the detailed how-to information I was desiring, made especially clear through the videos.”
“Very concise but thorough! Excellent course!”
“All my guitars are now set up beautifully. The precise measurements in each step make doing a professional set up easy.”
“There are many people who can play guitar like a champ, but very fewer who know how to set up the guitar. As a guitarist, our playability depends a lot on the setup. Thank you for this course.”

You will receive a certificate of completion — evidence of your skills to add to a CV, use with customers, or support a job application in the music industry.

Somatic Trauma & Life Coach for those who's daily functioning is impacted, perhaps been knocked off-course. Qualified teacher since 1995. Subject Advisor for Initial Teacher Training. Assistant Head Teacher and Subject Leader.
When not coaching people to reset their nervous system and regain their life, I enjoy my time teaching people how to play and repair guitars, whilst following my other passions for cooking and traveling the country.
I'm very much a creative person, making the most of life and my interests. And that's also included self employment, something that I really enjoy. I particularly loved the Guitar Repair 'employability' projects that I'd established and ran for a number of years .. and actually secured European Social Funding to deliver the programs, and received a national 'EU Funds Winner' award for the most progress made with individuals. I'm very proud of that, extremely proud of those folks who used the training programs to improve their lives in even the smallest ways, and grateful for those who gave their time freely to help where possible.
Most importantly for me, when you're on my training courses, is that you're inspired, you benefit from the training, and you're enjoying it!
I'll leave it at that, and look forward to seeing you on my training programs.

Incredibly valuable information for first-time guitar setup (I have done this for my e-guitar and a new acoustic/western guitar). I have seen many (also free) videos before but this is the best so far because it comes in short videos for each step (= easy to find and re-visit) and shows all relevant details. Also the workflow (= order of setup: truss rod, nut height, action of strings, then intonation and pickup height) is quite clear. Furthermore it gives hints for (despaired ;-) beginners what to change when buzzing appears on the first few frets or 12th++ frets or all over. If I had a wish (for a six-star rating ;-) I would like to get a downloadable cheat cheat with all info summarized on one PDF page (also containing tables with the default "best practice" measures for different types of guitars) So all in all: Really great course, well done!

The course covers the key points, in setting up a guitar as described.. the presenter does a good job i refer to the video for carry out particular repairs on my own guitars, constructive criticism, it does not go into much detail on troubleshooting, for example if you continue to have string buzz, how to truly feel confident you know exactly where the buzz is and discuss all the causes, from uneven frets, twisted neck, in the video it just covers trust rod adjustment which in my experience does not solve all fret buzz issues

Great advice from a down to earth instructor! Using the first 2 modules I have managed to setup my old ESP Floyd Rose back to a playable standard after giving up and hanging it on the wall for a decade! Now looking to put these new skills into practice and experiment on some cheap marketplace acoustic and electric guitars to expand my knowledge. Onto Module 3 to build some nuts next!

Excellent course, perfectly pitched! Thank you for making everything so concise and easy to understand. As someone who has played and 'tinkered' with set ups for many years this was the best instructional course I have ever come across. Thank you.

I now have an even better understanding of how a guitar can sound perfect and how I can achieve this perfect sound through a few fine adjustments. While I have only practiced on an electric guitar with a floating bridge, I now have the know how to work on other types of guitar as well. And I can refer back to this at any time if I need to refresh my memory. Really enjoyed this module and the first one, and looking forward to starting another very soon!

I have been meaning to learn proper guitar setup for some time, having 'dabbled' over the years on my own collection using online videos as reference. This course was a great resource, detailing each stage of the setup process in depth while offering some very worthwhile tips along the way. Kevin was both engaging and extremely knowledgeable!

Yes, this has helped fill in the gaps to what i already thought i knew. It is something i will need to have my practical experience of to ensure i can put into practice what i have learned and do expect this to take some time, but am confident that i now have the resources to go back to so i can methodically set up a guitar.

Kevin, like myself, seem to learn this craft from hobby experience. He summarized what is already vastly available in youtube. But feel is he is focused on making more courses instead of deeper understand what is behind the guitar mechanics and give us some special hints and tricks we cannot find anywhere else. Lectures are relatively short, not much theory.

Another great lesson set from Kevin. Even if you know some of this stuff, it's a nice refresher, and you can have all the information on doing set ups consolidated in a well organized video set if you're ever fuzzy on something.

I wanted to learn how to set up my own guitars, both acoustic and electric. This course was great! It provided the detailed how-to information I was desiring, made especially clear through the videos, and provided great information on the proper tools to use and have on hand! Thanks, Kevin!
