Learn Java the Easy Way: Build Desktop & Android Mobile Apps (Udemy.com)

This was an amazing course. An easy and fun introduction to Java. The only issue I'd have is not explaining some aspects of Java in more detail (e.g., some more obscure variable types, public/protected/private, etc.). He just uses some things and explains some better than others, but not why we'd generally want to use it. You can generally get it and extrapolate after a few uses, but this course isn't really designed for you if you want more of the fundamental "theory" of Java. There are probably more courses for that. The android apps were harder to fully get because the interface is more confusing and the xml code is a bit more complex (and aside from telling you what to write/change, he doesn't explain anything about why it's structured that way or how to really use gradle). The very last app I wasn't able to finish because of some errors using ImageView, even though I followed along exactly with his code. I think it might be because there have been several updates to the android classes (I'm taking this course in 2019) and his version doesn't fully work now without some changes--stackoverflow could probably help. With all that though, overall this was a an amazingly fun course to take and I'm really excited I got to create so many wonderful apps.

This really takes it to the basics, making use of easy-to-use frameworks so we get to a result fast. Today's (March_08_2019) Android Studio has a slightly different look and feel but it's the same functionality. One course that got me creating an .apk on my Samsung S9+ after only a few lesson definitely keeps me excited and wanting to learn more! Instructor has apparently abandoned the course. Students are placing "questions" where they essentially ask the instructor and other students to debug their code with uploads of more than two hundred lines, and Udemy has no checks or safeguards against such abuse. I don't blame the instructor for abandoning his course when students are abusing the system with massive uploads like that. The biggest of the big for a 2-Star rating: The Android Studio interface which the instructor uses has a completely different interface from what the student can get today; making the last two thirds of the course, well, I'm not going to learn how to write an Android App. By the way, this disparity with the Android Studio User Interface is now eight months and running. HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The instructor is an excellent teacher, and I'm going to continue the course to become proficient in Java on the Desktop, as the Eclipse stuff is absolutely perfect. So, after eight months, I have decided to salvage what I can from this course, learn Java on the desktop, and perhaps learn Java App development for Android some other way. Again, the instructor's course structure and ability to teach are excellent. The Android Studio User Interface is the one, the only, and the entire problem. This may have been the nicest and friendliest intro to coding I've seen. One reason why I like web design over raw programming is that you can see interesting results without too much effort. This instructor, especially with the BubbleDraw, accomplished that. I've taken several programming courses and it's always seemed it took a lot of code to do very little in return, which is a turnoff. The Bubble app really produced a lot in return without extreme elbow grease, relatively speaking. Plus the instructor is so nice.

I purchased the book not knowing there was on online course that also supports the same book. This class get's to started by IMMEDIATELY having you code along your first app. Learn by doing....Coding/programmer is just like running or exercising. You can read all you want about the theory and discuss it however, if you don't get down playing around with the software and learning, it's not going to stick. Great job Dr. Payne.

The high/low guessing of the instructor is EXTREMELY distracting and annoying after the first many times, the course should be revamped by having learners and the basic program as taught display the target number as a "cheat" so we don't waste all this time; that's what I did in my program, it's such a waste of time guessing up to 7 times and watching the instructor doing the same, it becomes demotivating. The course is quite good, but really needs to be updated for current Android studio and really needs more theory, I feel like I'm not really learning how to find things, understanding the "why" of syntax and structure, etc..

Lots of fun doing this course. Bryson has a lovely teaching style. Its definitely a 'Learn by doing' approach, consequently there are times when I feel I don't quite understand exactly what something means or why something does what it does. I'm likening it to any spoken language...if you want to learn Italian move to Italy! Sure, in the start you wont understand much and will be just 'parroting' but eventually the understanding will come......fingers crossed.

Very good course to jump right into the language. I really enjoy that you get to see the immediate outcome of the coding, and that you can see a real world application for what you've learned, as opposed to dry, boring exercises. I found the challenges at the end of the lessons to be challenging without being overly difficult. I enjoyed them. He really makes the content relevant and understandable. I had no prior programming knowledge (outside some basic, outdated HTML) before this course.

Dr. Bryson Payne's teaching approach is excellent and impressive. His easy-to-follow videos showing step-by-step how an application is developed allowed me to learn Java in three (3) different platforms. Indeed, one can truly learn Java the easy way, as stated in the course title.

I really like Bryson's' teaching style. He knows his programming very well. He is also very helpful when it comes to answering questions. I hope he teaches more advanced Java course, so I can learn to develop more complex algorithms and data structures and design GUI's like a pro.
