Jazz piano is important because it is a significant and influential genre of music that has shaped the course of musical history. Jazz music, in general, emerged in the early 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States and quickly spread throughout the world, influencing other musical styles and cultures.
Piano has played a significant role in the development of jazz, with many of the most celebrated jazz musicians, including Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Herbie Hancock, being pianists. Jazz piano is characterized by its improvisational nature, complex harmonies, and syncopated rhythms. It often features intricate and challenging solos and requires a high level of technical proficiency.
Jazz piano has influenced and been influenced by many other genres of music, including classical, blues, and rock. It has also served as a source of inspiration for many other musicians and artists. Studying jazz piano can enhance a musician's technical ability and improvisational skills, as well as their understanding of music theory and composition. It can also deepen their appreciation and understanding of the history and cultural significance of jazz.

I have classic piano background and I have been taught by three different teachers, but I still cannot play jazz piano though I have enough materials and I listen to jazz. I was relieved to hear Willie, the instructor says nobody can improvise at the beginning. His instruction adds up with each video and at the end of the course, it gave me hope I could do it. Also, since I have a full-time job, the time to spend for practicing is limited, but I found this course very time-efficient since each video is relatively short.

I wanted to take my time to really comment on this course. I can now can say with hand on my heart that this course is just brilliant and inspiring. Willie is an engaging teacher who is really clear on just how you can achieve your goals in a realistic way. I am so delighted that I am finally sounding more like I wanted to play. I will be definitely taking further courses as this is exactly a match for my interests and abilities. Thanks so much Willie!

I'm an eternal beginner in Piano and was skeptical towards learning from online videos. But the description of the course sounded like exactly what I was looking for (entry point into Jazz). I went in with full motivation and committed to practicing 30 min for 5 days a week. Progress was steady and after spending a total of 15 hours I reached the end of the course. I still need to get the song up to speed but otherwise I am thrilled with the result. The best thing about this course is the instructor. At first I had the impression that he will go too fast but it turns out that he's very patient. In most cases when I had a doubt myself about something he just said, he repeated it himself, sometimes twice, sometimes slowing down. This gave me the feeling of being on track and being encouraged. To sum it up, he has really good pedagogy, something that many online teachers are lacking.

Really enjoying this course. I'm a relatively new piano learner (Started at 40 years old, about 1.5 years ago). And I'm learning that Jazz & Blues is pretty complicated, but Willie is making it possible even for me to learn & catch on to some of the topics. With lots of practice, I'm starting to get the hang of Ben's Blues! Early on, when I was just starting, I asked my young kids if they wanted to hear me play Ben's Blues... They said "Nooooo, please noooo!". But now, they're like "Oh yeaaaah!!!!" So I'm feeling pretty good. Thanks again Willie for making this possible. And I'm looking forward to progressing deeper into this course.

Willie ... fantastic. I haven't played in years and have recently retired to an island in Panama. Looking for new ways to keep the brain young and have fun. Your class provides both. Only minor issue I had is that the closed captioning had errors in it that could be edited out. When I tried to pause and grasp a concept better, the closed captioning didn't tie together with the audio.

I would appreciate a little bit more music theory - Just mention that you’re paying playing a C chord Moving to a f chord. Even casual references that are not understood by all Will start getting the terminology and theory. No one can become of that artist simply by memorization. You have to understand what you’re doing. I’ll have to see if this gets any better but that would be my main criticism. Definitely you added more music theory right after that is very helpful. I’m not quite sure how all of these parts fit together yet because some of the things that we’ve learned don’t seem to fit into the song but I guess we’ll get there.

Is a good udemy course. Can learn something even you are a beginner or an advanced player. I think one point I would highly appreciate is the neat / simple approach of this course, which also reaching a deep and board objective. e.g. this course included (1) a simple base line and melody for beginners (2) some jazz chord formulas (3) pentatonic scale, blues scale and methods to lick them which are some core of jazz (4) and some improvisation tips. In this way, the structure is simple and short enough, but with these elements can get a good beginnings on practicing jazz. I think is worthwhile for the time and cost. p.s. my bg. I played piano for 30+ years and publicly performing in local church for 15+ years. 1st half mainly on classic and 2nd half mainly on contemporary. have had some basics in blues and jazz, watched many jazz courses / books, and find this course useful.

With just a few basic piano skills this course is a superb way to ramp those skills, fast and furious. I was blown away by the progress I made, musically, just by picking up the vibe Willie gives off. What basic skills do you need? Know the names of the keys. Know how to construct a 7th chord. Be able to find your way round a simple basic sheet of music. That's all. You will pick up the rest quite easily from the course content. I found the presentation method a bit strange at first. The first 4 lectures are just downloads, with no explanation or reasoning. The next 8 lectures are demos, with no reference to the downloads. Eventually it became clearer, so don't let it bug you. Just revel in the mind-blowing thrill of it all.

Upped my rating to 4 stars after going through entire course - but I bought this on sale for $10 and would price this at about $25 tops. Very good production and content and obviously he knows his stuff and really knows how to play. The bass line riff is excellent and challenging and not the usual 123 and 4; and he breaks all the left and right hand riffs into small chunks in separate lessons. He does talk very fast and this might be an issue for some. Small gripe - I just wish he wouldn't frustrate the student (me!) by occasionally playing the bass line ultra fast licks without looking at the keyboard. It's intimidating and it smacks of "I'm (naturally) a great jazz artist, and you never will be at my level no matter how hard you practice". Frustrating to watch at times. But the goals he sets in this course are specific, well taught and attainable (at a decent speed) for the student who is willing to put in the effort.
