Our take

Based on the ratings of 4,094 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a Word 2016 course from Simon Sez IT, a training company with a huge video catalog. It runs about 8.4 hours over 94 lectures, though roughly two hours of that is bonus material in the Extras and Additional Training sections, so the core lessons are closer to six. The syllabus moves from a blank page through character and paragraph formatting, tables, styles, page setup, graphics, mail merge, indexing and review tools. It is aimed at people with no Word background, and at self-taught users who want to fill gaps.

Reviewers mostly like how easy it is to follow. Several call the explanations concise, say the demonstrations are real screen work and not slides, and appreciate the downloadable exercises. A few self-taught users say it cleared up functions that had frustrated them. The complaints are specific. Some find the narration too talkative and detailed for true beginners. One reviewer says a few quiz answers are set incorrectly, another found the Working with Tabs lesson hard to follow, and one says the on-screen section names did not always match their copy of Word 2016.

Roughly nine in ten of the 4,094 ratings are four or five stars, and the course was last updated in December 2025. Still, it teaches Word 2016, so menus on Microsoft 365 may look a little different, and the same category lists a separate Word 365 course. Recommended for beginners on Word 2016 who learn best by watching and then doing. Experienced desktop publishers will find it too light.

Best forAbsolute beginners and self-taught Word 2016 users who want a practice exercise after each module.
Skip it ifYou use Word 365 and want its newer menus, or you need advanced desktop publishing, or dislike detailed narration.

Pros

  • Real screen demonstrations rather than slides, with downloadable exercises
  • Starts from a blank page and moves slowly, so total newcomers can keep up
  • Covers mail merge, sectioning, tables and styles in dedicated sections
  • Self-taught users say it explains functions that had frustrated them

Cons

  • Teaches Word 2016, so Microsoft 365 users may find menus and labels differ
  • Some reviewers say the narration is too wordy for beginners
  • A few quizzes have wrong answers, and the Working with Tabs lesson is unclear
I have learned more in this course than I did in a night school class. The course is easy to follow and I appreciate the downloadable exercises.

Beginner level fits, and no prior knowledge is needed. One reviewer says beginners may find the narration too detailed.

The info does not match perfectly to my MS 2016 software, but it's easy to figure out the difference in "language" ... very good so far. This very basic course would be good for someone with little knowledge who works in a small office. It is too "lightweight" for professional desktop publisher. There are discrepancies between how the sections are labeled, and how what the teacher calls them. So confusing. Very poor format.

This course is definitely worth the time and money! Very informative and engaging. Provides actual demonstrations (not just slides) on how to operate functions in Word and provides exercises to practice with. I would recommend this course to anyone!

Thank you, Cindy. A comprehensive and well pace coverage of Word 2016. However, you may like to get your assistant to go through the answers to the Quiz questions, as a few of them were set incorrectly. Nevertheless, I will still strongly recommend this course to any learners, who maybe totally new to MS Word, beginners or a quick refresher course for those who knew how to use this application, but hardly use this soft skill at work. Cindy, hope to hear from you again wrt topic on Merging Email. Thank again. Good day!

yes i feel that i need to go over this because i seem to second guess my self because i was out of the loop for so long.

By Stephen Jones on 12/26/2018

Although I have been using word for years, the course closes the gaps in knowledge of word and allows immediate practical use in my everyday job. Now when I write policies, reports or any formal document, I am able to apply what I have learned or know there are better ways to accomplish my objective.

By Juanita B on 4/27/2018

The course was ok, but I feel it could have been better. There were a few of my questions that were not addressed.

By Sérgio Santos on 2/25/2017

Very good MS Word course. It covers all of the features that Word has, the instructor is very knowledgeable, and explains everything in a clear and concise way. In the end of each module You'll have exercises and questions to consolidate what you've learned. If You are a beginner or intermediate user, I definitely recommend it.

By John Joseph on 12/21/2016

Cindy is an excellent instructor. I would pick this course if searching for a comprehensive learning tool for MS Word 2016. Unfortunately I picked one first that I was not pleased with and then this. Trust this review - it is completely fair and accurate.

By Jason Wisniewski on 12/2/2016

Overall a great overview of MS Word giving an intermediate to probably upper intermediate level understanding of the program. Each topic is nicely broken down and slowly builds on previously demonstrated information. Videos are not too long so you maintain focus.

By Alexandra Cavanagh on 10/4/2016

Excellent! The instructor does start from the very beginning, but even with the first video, there are very thorough instructions and information that any professional can use. Even if you have used this program for years, like most of us, you can certainly pick up many handy tips for navigating the program. Since there are 100 short videos, I would split it up into 3 nights and have your own version of Word open (maybe on another laptop or desktop), along with the instructional video.
