Linux for Cloud & DevOps Engineers (Udemy.com)

Linux basics about files, directories, installations, networking, system configuration, user management etc...

Created by: AR Shankar

Last updated September 2026

Our take

Based on the ratings of 5,289 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in September 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.

AR Shankar's Linux course is a short, beginner-level primer: 43 lectures across 11 sections, about 4.7 hours in total. It starts with what an operating system is, then moves through files and directories, user management, software installs, services, and a block of extra topics that covers things like grep, sed, find and cron. It was last updated in September 2026, so it has been refreshed recently. It is built for people heading toward cloud or DevOps work who have never touched a Linux server.

Reviewers like the pace and the teaching. The instructor demos each command, and students call the explanations precise, structured and easy to follow, even if they knew nothing about Linux going in. One says it is pure learning with no filler. The complaints are specific. One reviewer hit configuration steps that did not match the demo and had to sort them out manually. A Spanish-language reviewer found the ending incomplete, with outdated network commands. Still, about 89 percent of ratings are four or five stars, and roughly 2 percent are one or two.

Value-wise it is tight. Sections like System Management, Process Management and Networking get one or two short lectures each, and there are no quizzes or coding exercises, so practice is up to the student. The course page also talks about Bash scripting, CI/CD and production troubleshooting, but the section list does not show a scripting section. Treat it as a quick foundation, then move to something deeper for scripting and troubleshooting. One reviewer suggests watching at 2x if you already know the basics.

Best forComplete beginners aiming at cloud or DevOps who want a quick, structured first pass at Linux in under five hours.
Skip it ifYou already use Linux daily or want real depth on scripting, networking and troubleshooting.

Pros

  • Instructor demos every command, so beginners can follow along step by step
  • Short at about 4.7 hours, easy to finish in a weekend or two
  • Covers files, users, permissions, services, cron, grep, sed and find
  • Refreshed in September 2026 and rated 4.6 from about 5,300 reviews

Cons

  • Some demo configurations did not match what students saw, forcing manual fixes
  • Network commands in the later lessons are called outdated by one reviewer
  • Thin on depth: one or two lectures each for networking, processes and system management
great lectures, i had no idea about linux but now i know a lot, the lectures are very structured, and in easy beginner friendly language.
Gaurav Mishra, a student

Beginner level fits: it assumes only basic computer skills. Anyone already using Linux will find it slow.

The course was good but as some points the configurations were mismatching so the things were little different and you have to manually do each and every configurations which wasted my time otherwise the course was really good.

By Ximena Flores on 2/9/2026

Curso incompleto, arranca bien pero al final hay muchos comandos de network desactualizados, podria ser mejor

One of the best courses I have taken on Udemy platform. Mr. Shankar has illustrated linux as KG teacher would teach 5 year old, Simple and easy. Thank you very much for your hard-work. Keenly waiting to watch and learn a course on Shell Scripting from you.

By Kelandama on 5/16/2023

One of those rare courses where the instructor says "For Beginners" and actually delivers on that in the framing of the descriptions. I'd thoroughly recommend it for Linux beginners.
