Linux Mastery: Master the Linux Command Line in 11.5 Hours (Udemy.com)

Learn the Linux Command Line from Scratch and Improve your Career with the World's Most Fun Project-Based Linux Course!

Last updated April 2023

Our take

Based on the ratings of 27,499 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in April 2023. No course pays to be reviewed.

Ziyad Yehia's Linux course is a beginner-first tour of the command line, built around a virtual machine you set up in the opening lectures. It runs about 10.7 hours across 67 lectures and 14 quizzes. Most of the time goes to the terminal itself and the file system, with shorter sections on automation with Bash scripts and cron, and on installing software with package managers. It is aimed at people who have never opened a terminal, though someone with patchy Linux knowledge could use it to fill gaps.

Reviewers keep coming back to the teaching. They describe Ziyad as energetic, clear and a little funny, and a non-native English speaker says the explanations are easy to follow. One reviewer who already ran Linux Mint and an Ubuntu server says it explained why commands work, not just how. The complaints are mostly about age. Some say certain commands now throw errors, and one wants the ls lecture redone because the command has more options. One reviewer finds it a bit long. The one- and two-star reviews are few, and cite errors in videos, trouble following along and being nudged to leave a rating.

The last update was April 2023, so expect to look up a flag or two. Still, a 2026 reviewer says everything held up on current Ubuntu and Mint. With roughly 27,500 ratings, most of them four or five stars, and about 149,000 students, it is a safe first Linux course for a slow, type-along pace. Anyone already comfortable with pipes and cron can skip it.

Best forComplete beginners who want the why behind each command, taught with plenty of typing practice.
Skip it ifYou have years of Linux behind you, or you need every command checked against current versions.

Pros

  • Explains why a command works, not just what to type, which a reviewer with prior Linux use said filled gaps
  • Energetic, funny delivery that reviewers call fun and not boring
  • Clear English that a non-native speaker called easy to follow
  • Covers the file system, Bash scripting, cron and package managers in one beginner course

Cons

  • Last updated April 2023, and some reviewers hit commands that now error out
  • One reviewer found it long and wished it were shorter and more concise
  • No coding exercises, so practice depends on you typing along in the virtual machine
As non-native speaker the language and the explanations are clear. The practice with commands that are easy to understand is a benefit for each beginner.
Maria-Cristina Sedderz, a student

Truly beginner level. No prior Linux needed, and light users can use it to fill gaps.

======================================================================

Hello and welcome to the Linux Mastery Course where you are going to master the Linux command line in a project-based and unforgettable way.

This course has been expertly crafted to make sure that you rapidly improve your Linux skills, Turbocharge your productivity and Boost your career with no time wasting and no useless fluff.

Course Structure

  • Topic 1) Mastering the Linux Terminal

Understand the How AND Why of the Linux Command Line

If you want true mastery, it's not enough to learn how to do something. You need to understand why.

In this section, you will learn what Linux commands are, and how they are structured so that you can get valuable insight into how working with the Linux command line works, rather than just memorising command after command after command like other Linux courses will make you do.

You will learn important concepts such as:

  • The difference between the Linux terminal and the shell

  • Command Input and Output

  • Data Redirection.

  • Connecting Linux Commands together to Build Sophisticated Data Pipelines.

And so many other useful concepts that will give you the fundamental skills to confidently use the command line to accomplish anything you want.

This course also focuses on empowering you to be an independent learner of the Linux operating system so you will also learn how to use the Linux Manual.

Knowing how to use the Linux manual will give you the independence to do what you want to do, rather than just what other people have shown you.

  • Topic 2) Mastering the Linux File System

Increase Productivity by Working with Files from the Linux Command Line

Once you’ve become a master of the Linux terminal and understood the critical concepts behind what you’re doing, you will then move on to gain mastery over the Linux File System.

Working with Files is what we do 99% of the time when we work with computers and in this section you will learn how to navigate the file system from the command line and perform a whole bunch of tasks with files and folders such as:

  • How to Create files and folders in Linux

  • How to Delete files and folders in Linux

  • How to Copy and paste files and folders in Linux.

  • How to Move and Rename files and folders in Linux.

  • How to Find files and Sort data in Linux.

  • How to Backup and Compress files and folders in Linux.

But you'll do it all from the Linux command line!

You will also learn some productivity tips to squeeze every bit of juice out of your command line work as well as getting a tour of the Linux file system so that you feel right at home :)

  • Topic 3) Mastering Task Automation and Scheduling

Save time by automating the boring stuff!

Once you’ve mastered the Linux file system, we will turn our attention to task automation and scheduling.

Now, if you’re the kind of person who loves to automate tasks and free up your spare time, you will LOVE this section!

We will cover how to write bash scripts and automate them using a special scheduling program called cron so that you can automate the boring stuff and increase your productivity.

  • Topic 4) Mastering Package Managers and Software Repositories

Discover new tools and possibilities by exploring Open Source Software.

Then in the Final section of the course, we will turn our attention to Linux software management.

One great thing about Linux is that it is an open source operating system that is being contributed to by millions and millions of people around the world.

In this section of the course you will gain the independence to search through this enormous body of software for cool new tools that do what you want, and learn how to install and manage that software all from the Linux command line.

You will also learn how to access source code and customise programs, as well as understand the subtle differences between free and open source software.

Projects + Quizzes

At the end of each section there are capstone projects that serve as badges of honor that confirm you have fully understood concepts and are ready to progress to the next level of Linux mastery.

There are also quizzes scattered throughout the course to further check your understanding.

BONUS: Lecture Summaries + Cheat sheets.

The course also comes with free professionally-designed cheat sheets and section summaries so you don't even need to take notes!

Excellent course. I have taken so many courses on Linux so far and this is the best among them. Best because I learnt new techniques of file creation, brace expressions to create multiple files and folders (which I did not learn anywhere else - this was new to me) and also the instructors sophisticated British English. Using all these I would ask chatGPT to prepare a few questions to reinforce my learning further. All of these techniques made this course a truly memorable one. I have also enrolled into Ziyad's Bash scripting course and hope to learn more in that one too.

By Pramesh Maurya on 8/1/2026

nothing able to understand its make me boring

By Willie Pietersen on 7/7/2026

This course was exactly what I needed. I am not totally new to Linux, and my laptop uses Linux Mint, and my VPS is Linux Ubuntu. There were a lot of things I knew how to do, but did not know why and sometimes not even realising that there was a reason for some commands. It is now if I can use the command much more in advance. The trainer's explanation is also very good. You will notice that this course is a bit old, but I must say everything is still relevant to the newest Ubuntu and even Mint. So yes, I will recommend this course. Even for 2026

By Carlos Farfan on 6/26/2026

the course is good but is not updated and while I try using some of the commands explained here , I get many errors which after researching I see that this is due to updated commands, I have to mention that I have seen this before and did not paid much attention on this 2017 course which shows many commands that don't work on and need to be updated. Over all is good teaching but not updated material

By Juan Carlos de Leon Torres on 5/19/2026

I'm learning a lot. This is the first time I ever do anything with Linux. I just have to take my time to understand everything.

By Maria-Cristina Sedderz on 4/12/2026

Excellent experience for me. As non-native speaker the language and the explanations are clear. The practice with commands that are easy to understand is a benefit for each beginner. I'm looking forward to the upcoming lessons in this course.

By Abdelghani Souirji on 2/21/2026

Thanks Ziad for this excellent course that makes it much easier for me to quit Windows' inferno and enter efficiently into Linux freedom!

By Sean Ellis on 2/21/2026

I was very impressed with what I learned by the end of the course. My only wish is that the instructor spent more time on permissions, but this was a good course for a beginner.

By Noah Alvarez on 1/13/2026

covered everything in depth and expanded on the concepts perfectly with mini assignments. great course

By Raghu Vikas Reddy Yadavalli on 1/8/2026
