This course is gold. There are situations when the admin configures the network in a way that it is just hard to use. For example: A cannot directly talk to C, but packets can flow between A-B and B-C. However, communication between A-C is temporarily necessary for work. I can simply a) create a VPN between A-B. On A, route packets to C through the tunnel and then, on B, with ip_forward enabled, do an SNAT. or b) do a DNAT on A, so that all packets destined to C will visit B, and then on B, another DNAT (translates dst IP to C), and an SNAT. This is amazing, I am no longer bound by my work environment. And now I truly understand those cryptic iptables commands on StackOverflow and other similar sites. ------- additional comments: - I don't find the bash scripting sub-course as useful, it's kind of like a bonus. - DigitalOcean affiliate link is nice.

This course helped me a lot to understand the concept of linux kernel firewall. Prior this course I was struggling to setup VPN tunnel to my home network, and main reason was poor understanging of linux firewall. This course changed that, and I was able to troubleshoot the issue and VPN now works as expected. Really well structured course with hands-on approach. Thank you Andrei!

Linux Iptables/netfilter technical deep dive. This is a highly compact course that covers most features of iptables firewall, including access control, NAT, throttling, etc. The first couple of lessons are very dense, and I had to keep going back over the material. But later chapters review earlier material and slow down. Presenter has a fairly thick accent, but he is slow and consistent, so I didn't have any trouble following him.

A very pragmatic course that manages to teach a lot in a very simple manner. I really liked how many examples there are about the different contexts where iptables can be applied. Also, the questionnares and challenges provided make one think about and practice the most important aspects of their corresponding sections.

By Steven Seidenberg on 3/8/2021

This is an outstanding introductory guide to Iptables. The pace and breadth of topics covered gives anyone that completes the course a practical knowledge to get started with Iptables. Along with covering basic Iptables commands, this course does a good job of showing how packets traverse the various chains in Iptables. A good follow up course would be to really get into how Netfilter is implemented in the kernel.

Great course on iptables. The instructor explained everything clearly and with constant examples. I thought the section on ipset was very worthwhile. I'd like to see some more content added in the future but I feel this course has given me the knowledge to explore and understand the man pages if I need any particular edge-cases for firewall rules. Thanks for the course, a little added more content and i'd bump my review to 5 starts.

By Tommy TBones Cramer on 5/30/2020

I like that the information is given in a quick and presented in a very descriptive manner. Short easy to follow video training and as I was going through each lessons I found that I didn't have many questions. I know I'll watch ever lesson again not because I didn't learn what was taught there is so much that is relevant to my personal goals as a web server owner. I gave 5 star rating for multiple reason but I think the most important reason for me is that each lessons made me want to know more. I've taken 4 other Linux and Security courses and all were good although I feel this was the most complete regarding server security.

By Arkan Anabi on 5/26/2020

The explanation is clear for applying iptables. Just to mention, this course is suitable for people who has a basic knowledge of networking (ip addressing ipv4, subnetting, ...etc), I recommend to learn about ccna first then come to this course. I felt that this course is very good, because I can understand the commands and even when the instructor talked about blocking ip, or used in his topology L2 switch. The network was familiar to me.

By Max Preobrazhensky on 5/23/2020

I've always wanted to get some iptables skills, but the task was like a black hole. I've accumulated a lot of links and tutorials, even read some articles, but the topic always remained in a fog of war... Now I can calmly delete all the links, because the course made them obsolete. The best thing about the course is that it's hands-on and reproducible. NOTE: I've used 2 Ubuntu 20.4 Virtual Box VMs and ran them in bridged network, to ease the Host/VM communication.

By Ek Chotechawanwong on 4/18/2020

The course builds a strong foundation for its student. Chapters on various matchers e.g.set, recent, connlimit, multiport are eyes-opening. The ipset chapter is also very useful. However, I find the course lacking in the following areas - nft vs iptables (nft is replacing iptables in RHEL8) - jump vs goto target (kube-proxy uses both) and this is the reason I learn iptables - example usage of raw, security and mangle tables In term of format, I think there are too many redundant contents. Additionally, bluish font in vim is very hard to read.
