Docker for Beginners: DevOps for Java & Spring Boot (Udemy.com)

The course does a good job of explaining Docker fundamentals and the concepts are easy to follow. However, the content is quite outdated and many of the examples no longer work with current versions of Docker, Docker Desktop, Java, and Spring Boot. While following the course on a modern Apple Silicon MacBook, I encountered several issues, including: Deprecated Docker images (e.g. openjdk:8-jdk-alpine, rabbitmq:3.5.3-management) that are no longer available or supported. Docker Compose syntax changes (scale command, obsolete version attribute, etc.). Compatibility issues with newer Docker Desktop and containerd versions. Spring Boot 2.0 projects requiring Java 8, while newer JDKs (17/21/25) caused multiple runtime and build issues. Several configuration updates were needed to make the projects run successfully on current environments. The core concepts taught in the course are still valuable, but beginners may spend a significant amount of time troubleshooting environment-related issues instead of learning Docker. Updating the course to use current Docker images, Docker Compose V2, and modern Java/Spring versions would greatly improve the learning experience.

Great course for beginners. End to end examples and supporting documentation to followup independently for completion of the hands on really helps. Hands on example covers good depth and ensures by the end of the course you really understand the concepts. And you also learn new concepts around the micro services. I didn't know Zipkin before so that was an add on.

Great exposure to Docker, and microservices. Some minor issues with outdated versions, but for the most part those were easily resolved by the Q&A sections. Thanks. Looking forward to doing another course in28minutes!!

Excellent content to acquire in-depth knowledge on the topic. I really liked Ranga's style of explaining and how he touches on small details and theories while showing hands-on codes. I highly recommend this course to someone who wants to learn the nitty-gritty on the topic.

My only suggestion is that while you tell us the commands to execute, it would be great if you could also show us the link to the official documentation, e.g. - for openjdk:8-alpine, how did you know that there are also commands like EXPOSE, ADD and ENTRYPOINT that we could use or that ENTRYPOINT will have "sh" and "-c" arguments? I don't see these commands or options documented at https://hub.docker.com/_/openjdk

Zipkin and other api's being used in this course have been updated. Recommend this course be updated accordingly. Also, there have been a couple of instances where the code provided did not work on my local machine. In one instance I had to change up the order of the services defined in the docker compose file. In the other instance, not matter what I tried, on several different machines, using Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20, I could not get the app to run. I have posted these issues in this course Q&A section. Thank you.
