Our take
Based on the ratings of 1,845 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
Emile Ackbarali's course is a short, focused bridge for people who already understand Modbus on RS485 and now have to deal with Modbus TCP/IP. It runs about 2.8 hours across 73 lectures. The first half covers the IT side: network layering, IP addressing, Ethernet and the query-response cycle. Then come simulations, a DL05 PLC setup and two NETIO devices. It was last updated in May 2026, so it is not a forgotten upload.
Reviewers keep coming back to the same points. The teaching is clear, visual and step by step, and the examples are practical. One reviewer pulled data from plant monitoring sensors after finishing, and another says it helped with a Siemens PLC project. A third says it covers things other courses skip. The complaints are small. One early reviewer found the network layer lectures too short and wanted a live PLC to energy meter demo. Another wished the course showed how to find register addresses on devices that do not publish a map.
Value is hard to fault at under three hours, and the crowd agrees: 1,063 of 1,845 ratings are five stars, with 8,339 students enrolled. There are no quizzes or exercises, so practice depends on having a simulator or some cheap hardware to follow along. The course assumes RS485 knowledge, so take the instructor's RS485 course first if that part is new. For a working technician, it is a quick and sensible next step.
Pros
- Explains network layering, IP addressing and Ethernet only as far as Modbus TCP/IP needs
- Clear, visual, step by step teaching that reviewers find easy to follow
- Simulation section is the longest, so there is hands-on practice with client-server setups
- Reviewers report using it on real plant sensors, bench devices and a Siemens PLC project
Cons
- No quizzes or exercises, so practice depends on having a simulator or hardware
- Assumes working Modbus RS485 knowledge, so it is not a starting point
- Hardware sections use a DL05 PLC and NETIO units, which may not match the devices you use
Practical and straight to the point. I successfully obtained data from monitoring sensors in the plant using the skills taught in Emile's lecture.
Listed as intermediate, and fair: it expects Modbus RS485 and SCADA basics, but no IT or networking background.

Who it is for
The instructor says it suits
- Electrical Engineers
- Electrical Technicians
- Electrical Tech or Engineering Students
- Process Control Technicians and Engineers
- Automation Engineers
What you need before you start
- Working knowledge of Modbus RS485 Network Communication.
- Working knowledge of the process control devices in a typical Process Automation or SCADA system
Course Description
If you deal with Automation and Process Control equipment, chances are that you are very familiar with terms like RS232, RS485, 4-20mA, DI, DO, AI and on and on. However, standards in Information Technology have been making their way into the fields of Automation and Process control. Modbus falls into that category as well.
Modbus has traditionally been used on RS485 networks. However, Modbus TCP/IP has gained in popularity and is being implemented more and more. Here is where the challenge exists. As a tech or engineer in the automation field, in order to implement, maintain and troubleshoot Modbus TCP/IP networks, you will need to know about certain technologies in the field of IT work. The latter can be a BIG challenge since the field of IT is so expansive and you don't have the time to learn all of it.
That is what this course is for.
In this course, I am going to take your existing knowledge of Modbus RTU, combine it with what you need to know from the world of IT and give you all that you need to build, maintain and troubleshoot Modbus TCP/IP networks. And I am going to do that in the shortest possible time and in the most practical way that I know

I have been working in the fields of Software Development, Software Systems Integration and Process Automation since 1996. In 2003, I stepped out on my own and started working for myself providing software development and systems integration services to small and medium businesses.
Teaching has always been a passion for me. I have taught at the tertiary level for many years on the subjects of programming, control systems as well as systems integration. In the last few years I found myself incorporating more and more videos into the curriculum with amazing results.
When I heard of uDemy I just could not help but sign up. With teaching in a classroom, you can reach only so many students, but with uDemy you can reach the world! I plan to publish and promote as many courses as I possibly can on the uDemy platform.

It is really good, it complete things that the other course do not cover. It really god idea how showed the conection throught everything, it could be amazing is he have a course with this this 2 types of protocol applied to a device that do not shows the maps of address, I know that the instructor say that you are death in the water, however, there are devices by certains company's that do not show that information, so it will really help if there is a way, at least, to find the address for trouble shoothing.

Another great course has come to an end. Thank you Emile, for your explanations, the knowledge you provided, and the things you taught. After Mastering the RS485 course and completing this one, which course do you suggest I should take from you next? I work in this field and need to become proficient in these topics. I look forward to your response. Thanks!

This is another brilliant course from Mr. Ackbarali. It got me from a total noob to someone who can now connect to TCP-IP devices on my bench using my laptop and some cheap devices I bought to practice along with this course. It's simple, punch and full of useful information, so time and money very well spent for quite invaluable teaching. Perfect for beginner and intermediate level engineers.

Course content is good, delivery is good. Very clear explanations. One thing I felt was that each of leesons are too short and then it loads the next lesson. The frequency of loading is too high. Instead, each lesson can be made for a period of 10 or 15 minutes and cover one full topic

The best course for beginners who have no prior knowledge about Modbus TCP/IP protocol. The trainer was very thorough and was able to explain the stuff in a simple and "easy to understand" manner. Furthermore, the hands-on exercises and practical simulation of some simple real life examples helped to put into practice what I learned in the course. I came with zero knowledge and now leaving the course feeling like an expert on Modbus TCP/IP protocol. Thank you very much. Please do more courses and keep us enlightened and do let me know if you have published a course for SCADA with IEC 61850 protocol.

yes am glad so far on network layer lectures are carrying a lot of info but they are very short i expected we do a demonstration where a client PLC and a server ( energy meter ) are connected in a network + pg but am just glad and happy to have something to build on ..thank you very much and i appreciate

This is an excellent course conducted by an awesome instructor. Emilee explains key concepts very well and combined it with useful software simulations to enhance one's understanding of the topic. I benefitted immensely from the course and I have gone on to apply Modbus TCP/IP for my Final Year Project in my studies. Thanks, Mr Emilee.

Iam a automation engineer and the reason to take the cources is to find a solution for our customers for educating themselves. The course is great, but my opinion is if the PLC's for the hardware tests are more upgraded or up to date, let say them more modern, all will be excelent. Thanks.

The instructor does an amazing job of breaking down how modbus TCP/IP works at the byte level. One is easily able to understand how all the data bytes are put together. Update: just finished the course on TCP/IP and I must say that the instructor did a wonderful job! Emile seems to have a gift for making the complicated seem easy the way he breaks down the concepts. There is no doubt that I am ready to use this knowledge at my work. Thank you Emile for doing a wonderful job!!
