Practical Hands-on Data Query and Manipulation with SQL

Our take
Based on the ratings of 523 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in March 2026. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a short, hands-on intro to Transact-SQL, Microsoft's version of SQL. It uses SQL Server Express and SSMS, with the AdventureWorks sample database as the main playground. It runs about 5 hours over 55 lectures, and roughly an hour of that goes to installing and setting up before real querying starts. The sections cover CRUD operations, filtering, sorting, joins and aggregate functions. It is aimed at people who have never written a query, plus anyone who wants a quick refresher on SSMS. About 21,600 students have enrolled.
Reviewers like the pace and the plain explanations. Bluelime Learning Solutions gets called clear and concise, and several people say it works as a refresher after time away from SSMS. Of 523 ratings, 433 are four or five stars. The complaints are consistent, though. Many say lectures repeat the same step, like picking the right database before each query, and one says black screens and re-explaining pad the runtime. Others miss quizzes and want queries inside queries. One reviewer found narration and screen out of sync.
Last updated in March 2026, but it still teaches on SQL Server 2014 tooling, so the interface shown is an older version. The syllabus shown stops at joins and aggregates, so the views, triggers and indexes mentioned in the description are not clearly covered. As a first step into T-SQL it does the job, especially if repetition helps. Anyone wanting practice problems should add their own.
Pros
- Slow, clear explanations that reviewers say need no prior SQL or SSMS experience
- Covers the core loop: create, read, update and delete, plus filtering and sorting
- Joins and aggregate functions get their own sections, about 90 minutes together
- Short enough to finish in a weekend, and handy as an SSMS refresher
Cons
- Repetition is the top complaint: the same steps are re-explained in lecture after lecture
- No quizzes or coding exercises, so students must invent their own practice
- Built on SQL Server 2014, and reviewers say there is little on queries within queries
Easy and perfect pace to explain end user with no Experience or knowledge in SQL . Really enjoyed the sessions.
Truly beginner. The only requirement is a computer, and it assumes no SQL or SSMS experience.

Course Description
The volume of data available is huge and increasing daily. Structured Query Language -SQL (pronounced as sequel) is the standard language used to communicate and interact with data stored in relational management database systems like Microsoft SQL Server Oracle, PostgreSQL,MySQL etc.
Different database management systems have their own proprietary version of the SQL language but they all conform to using some commands in SQL the same way. Microsoft SQL Server's version of SQL is known as Transact-SQL (T-SQL). In this course you will learn the basics of the SQL language and Transact-SQL since both use certain commands in the same way.
T-SQL is also popularly referenced to as T-Sequel .In this course you will learn all the basics of T-SQL. We will discuss the T-SQL features step by step. We will be using SQL Server Express 2014 (which is a free download). As a sample, we will use AdventureWorks 2014 as our database. Along the way, we will be creating our own t-SQL queries to get data into a database and also out of a database. But AdventureWorks 2014 will be our main focus. As far as T-SQL, we will start with the simple select statements and add new features as we go. I will introduce you to the data types available so you can make the appropriate selection when creating a column. Then, we will talk about joins, functions, tables, procedures, triggers, indexes, and much more. By the time you are done with this course, you will be very comfortable using T-SQL.
This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to create queries using Transact-SQL. It will teach you how to select, filter and sort data from multiple tables and how to use views and stored procedures. You will also be familiar with SQL Server Management Studio 2014 also known in the tech industry as SSMS. This is the tool you will use to write and see the output of your T-SQL queries.
What You will learn includes:
Installing SQL Server
Install SSMS
Basic Database Concepts

This was a great refresher course for myself. I found the material to be easy to follow. Great for beginners and people who haven't worked in SSMS in a while.
By Brett Daly on 11/19/2023
Alot of repeated tasks, explainations which can be frustrating, wastes time reexplaining things and the lesson is like 5mins to literally just say change 4 letters in some code on acending and decending, black screens for half the lectures sometimes to inflate the time on this course.

The instructor for this course I like a lot and is very clear & concise. Thank you for publishing helpful content, it has helped me so much to develop within my data job.

A lot of the times the same concept is repeated over and over troughout the course , like how to use the correct DB when writing a query , but overall it is a decent course, appropriate for someone who is just starting to learn SQL.
By Xavier Smith on 11/23/2022
This was a great course. The only thing I would ask for is a brief overview of datatypes, and how to navigate the MS-SSMS interface. Love the course, thank you!
By Andrew Krall on 8/12/2022
I found this course to be a good refresher coming from MySQL and PostgreSQL. The course was a bit too basic for my needs, but the course is titled "Microsoft SQL for beginners", so that probably should have been expected. Overall, the course was good. The only thing that I felt was missing was the fact that there were no knowledge checks at the end of each section. Having knowledge checks or quizzes would be beneficial in terms of ensuring the student understands each section of the course.

I subscribed for this course cause my current job requires some basic SQL knowledge about the queries. I am amazed cause I didn't get only basic knowledge but this course get my attention to SQL! Thank you!!!

Good clear instructions. A bit repetitive and slow at times but I think that is good, practice makes perfect. I watched this at 2x speed beacase it sometimes moved to slow. Otherwise good and informative.

What the instructor is teaching aligns well with my university course which is helping me to study SQL and database for my upcoming final exam
By Juan Pablo Luna Oliver on 6/2/2021
Excelentes explicaciones, en inglés británico nativo, muy fácil de entender, entonces se cumple una doble función, aprender SQL y practicar listening
