Course Description
There’s one fundamental thing in music that you can learn which will immediately improve your music compositions.
Without buying the latest sample libraries, without spending months or even years analysing the minute details of music orchestration, and the best news is that you probably already know a little about it.
And that’s melody.
In this melodic music composition course, you’ll learn:
A tried and tested method for composing better melodies from scratch
How to compose a strong melody over an existing chord sequence
What makes a good melody
How to compose countermelodies
The scales and modes you can use to compose more interesting melodies
I’ve taught literally hundreds of students how to compose music in person, and thousands more online, and I’ve also won awards internationally for my own music, but when I first start teaching a new group of students about composing melody, they often think it doesn’t apply to them.
Maybe you’re into death metal and don’t view that as melodic?
Or perhaps you’re writing minimalist music built on patterns or chord sequences?
Well…here’s the thing: you’re still writing melodic music.
As Leonard Bernstein said: “where there’s music there’s melody, you can’t have one without the other”
I remember one student in particular, Jamie, who was really into rap so didn’t think melody had much to do at all with what he was composing. During our first lesson we sat together and analysed some of his favourite tracks and he went wide eyed, amazed at just how many melodic elements there were in music that he himself had thought wasn’t melodic. He went on to write some of the most intricate, and interesting hip hop music I’ve heard for a long time.
So melodic music writing isn’t about composing “old-fashioned” symphonies or cheesy pop songs. It’s about writing better parts for any type of music.
Whether you’re a music producer with little formal musical training, or a classically trained musician frustrated about why your music isn’t connecting, my course on melodic music is going to help you learn to bring your compositions to life.
When you enrol:
You'll get lifetime access to the music composition program, where I walk you through all of the steps I use to create better melodies.
You’ll learn what to listen for while analysing your favourite music, all of the building blocks that are used to put a melody together,
I'll teach you a number of methods of creating and developing a melody, working with harmony, and creating counterpoint.
Remember that you’re protected by a 30-Day-Money-Back-Guarantee, no hard feelings, just in case you discover that the course isn’t right for you.
So if you’re ready to take your music composing to a new level, and to put in the work to get you there, click the “Buy Now” button now to enrol today.
See you in the course!
P.S. it isn't your mixing holding you back, you don't need a new sample library, and you don't need to be a musical prodigy to write great melodies. You just need to know what makes a good melody and apply that to your own compositions.
Enrol today and I'll show you exactly how.

I am an educator, composer, and performer specialising in composition and arranging for the moving image, and popular music performance.
As well as featuring on films that have had red carpet premiers in both London and LA, my music has won multiple international film festival awards.
Having originally studied Jazz Saxophone on LCoM’s first Jazz BTEC ND, I moved to music production to pursue a career in music for the moving image – initially completing the specialist Foundation Degree in Music Production for Film & Television, before finishing the BA(Hons) in Music Production, and topping it off with a PGCert in Composition.
I studied under the likes of Brian Morell (Elton John, Kate Bush) and BAFTA nominated Neil Myers, and have since worked on a multitude of projects but have a particular focus on film (both short and feature).

The course is the same generic textbook workflow that is freely available on youtube . it shows how you can experiment with different trial and error techniques but doesn't tell about the productivity like what the motif is really telling about the feel and what direction to move naturally rather it shows the technical approach which is already covered in depth by many other courses .

Hi, I've found the course extremely useful in terms of creativity for music composition. I really appreciate the clarity about the different forms and structures that can can be used in the composition because it has always been not very clear from other courses / videos I've attended. The composing techniques for melody writing are very clear and easy to follow. The lessons are well structured and linked to each other. Very good additional material inside the lessons. The only thing I would do is to improve the english transcription of the lessons.

I’ve really enjoyed this course and I was able to learn and apply what I’ve learned. However, I was expecting to see music notation instead of the DAW interface Jonathan uses. Nonetheless, I took that as opportunity to learn more about DAW which I found amazing. After this course, I searched for DAW software and found LMMS which is great. Thanks Jonathan! One thing I did not really enjoy, was the constant zoom in and zoom out during some of the videos. I will take the course again and will try to find more from the same author.

This course was concise, informative, and presented in an easy to understand format. The handouts provided are a great resource (though a few more handouts on the material covered but not on the existing handouts would be appreciated, but this is far from a problem). I've been writing and playing for half my life (no formal training), and I found the instructor's method of melody composing to be the best method of explaining the process of developing a melody that I've come across so far. I think that those (preferably) with a little bit of theory under their belts will find this course enlightening.

At the beginning I decided to work right through the course without stopping to explore the detail. I do intend to go back over some sections in more detail and apply myself to the homework! So I feel in a good place to award 5 stars for an enjoyable and illuminating course. The tutor has an engaging style and I find myself wanting to learn more from him. If, like me, you have a bit of musical mileage in the locker and want to expand your understanding of music through composition, this is an excellent course even if you don't intend to write melodies! Inevitably I have a few suggestions to personalise the course to my own developmental needs but in general it is well balanced and thought through. Well done and thank you, Jonathan.

Really liked the information introduced in this class. It is done from a daw perspective for a modern producer/composer. This allows for much visual representation if your not too good at reading sheet music yet like me. Everything is clearly taught and easy to understand but very information dense. I will probably have to go through the videos several times but overall it accomplishes everything it sets out to regarding melodies. Many techniques to try out in here. Highly recommend the instructor and course.

Extremely helpful to music producers and songwriters who want to improve the quality of their music without falling into the endless 'buy another plugin' trap. Following this course had an immediate impact on my work, and I'd encourage students not to binge it right away but to apply each lesson to your music before moving along. WARNING: This course is best enjoyed by those who already have a basic foundation on music theory. If things like scales and diatonic chords sound crazy to you then please do brush up on you music theory before diving into this one.

Hi everyone! I think, the course is good! I learned a few nice tricks about the composing that I did know before actually, but just didn't think that they were that important, that useful. Like, for example, when you're writing a melody, one of the first few things to do could be: writing some lyrics first! It helped me to solve and complete several of my unfinished melodies and to compose some more new interesting and nice ones! My only complaint about the course would be that: the teacher often speaks way too fast and indistinguishable, unclear! English is not my mother tongue, but I speak and improve it already for 20 years. There were plenty of times when I couldn't understand a word even after 10 times listened, even with the transcript, that gave confusing words that didn't make any sense. For a non English native speaker at times, I think, it will be a challenge to understand what does teacher say. That was really annoying. Maybe teacher might want to think about speaking a bit slower and more distinguishable, a bit more relaxed and slow? But as I said before - the information inside the course is interesting, useful and must-know, if you want to learn to write your own music. The teacher is also definitely a professional and an expert!

I liked it a lot. It was explained very good, and although I am not a beginner in terms of music I didn't feel bored. Possibility to ask questions for the teacher and quite fast response is another big advantage. What is convenient, all lessons have markups dividing it into smaller subpoints. This course covers how to write melody, and it is the main purpose. You wouldn't get from there how to write whole songs. While whole course made an overall good impression, there are some little improvements that can be done: - I understand that due to the copyrights teacher can't play famous pieces. But it would be great if he made an analysis of them, pointing out some fragments. - It would be really handy, if there would be a small summary of all lessons in a one file, same as was done with music theory. Those are not considerable issues, just ideas to make the course perfect.

I'm an hobbyist composer, and have mostly relied on the brute force method for composing. ie. Trying stuff until things sounded good. I've found it hard to consistently output material this way. Spending a few hours to figure out 8 bars of music, and then not really knowing where to go with it other than copying it over the next 8 bars happens a lot for me. What I really needed was a structured, intentional approach to composition and this is what this course will give you. It's not just a bunch of tips, but a workflow that helps you come up with an outline for a melody and methods for developing it. This was a huge step up from noodling on my keyboard until something decent comes through. I worked on a track in tandem with the course material, and I put down a melody, counter melody, and a bass line across 16 bars of music in under 20 minutes combined over a chord progression I had. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely something I could work with to iterate on.
