Course Description

Course purpose:

Musical Architects will guide you step by step through the writing and production process of creating a professional recording.

I strongly believe that the best way to improve your skills is through practice. So let's write and produce a song together from a basic idea to the final mix!

I show you step-by-step the process I have used thousands of time from indie releases to #1 Billboard hits. I teach this hands-on workshop in Logic Pro, but the concepts apply to almost any DAW and music style.

Course layout:

Laid out in 12 sections we will cover each area we need to master in order to create a complete song and an interesting and unique production that reflects your unique voice and style. Each section covers an aspect of the process in detail: writing chord progressions, making a beat, melody writing, sound design, and side-chaining all the way to mixing and basic mastering of your composition.

Why this course?

It’s holistic and complete! The job of a writer is to express an idea or experience in a unique and authentic way. The job of the producer is to translate and dress this idea in the most effective way for the genre he or she is working in. Today’s independent artist has to understand both tasks to be successful and self-empowered.

You will not only improve your technical skills, but you will also grow musically and creatively in a holistic approach to songwriting and music production.

The Plan: How we’ll do it:

Together we’ll go on a journey to create Alchemy from a basic musical idea and demo to an emotive and professional sounding recording that moves you and the listener. I am writing and producing a brand new song alongside you.

The Benefit: What you will gain:

Students who complete this course will have a blueprint and a whole new toolset to produce and arrange their songs ideas and find a more unique and professional sound. They will be guided from building a section that works to a structure that flows, from a basic arrangement to a refined and 3-dimensional production that makes you discover more every time you listen to it. They will be taken beyond a you-can-hear-all-parts-mix to a dynamic and sonic world with depth.

We will question every step:

· Do the chords evoke the emotions we want?

· Does the rhythm move us the right way?

· Does the melody stick and yet surprise us?

· Are the sounds and timbres unique and compliment each other maxing out the sonic space?

· Do the dynamics take the listener on an auditory ride?

· Can we hear the essentials, can we hear the details?

· Is our mix and master comparable next to other mixes in the genre?

Who is it for?

This course is for the song-writer, beat-maker, and aspiring producer/composer with at least a basic understanding of music and maybe using a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation like Garageband, Logic, Pro Tools, Fruity Loops, etc.) to record a demo but is struggling to make their productions unique and sound like a pro. But you might get lots out of it even if you are quite experienced.

Why would you listen to me? Good question! (:

Real-world: I channeled 30 years of experience into this class, including producing (including 2 #1 Billboard Hits, contributing to 20+ million records sold) writing hundreds of songs and cues for independent releases and film and TV placements (over 4000 last time I checked like Blood Diamond, Little Miss Sunshine, Cable Girls, Sex and the City, etc.). I also taught over 2000 students for 10 years at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, and helped them in learning Logic (Apple Teacher Certified) and advised them in writing, recording, and producing their music.

Academia: I have a degree in classical guitar from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and additional studies at Berklee College of Music. I also have 5 years of professional experience in electronics.

What knowledge would be required as prerequisites?

Knowing the basics of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like Logic Pro (preferred and used in the class), Pro Tools, Ableton, etc.

It’s helpful to have good, basic computer knowledge, basic song-writing skills, and the ability to play simple chords on a keyboard and/or guitar. But, good ears can make up for a lot.

What do I need? (Software/Hardware)

A computer with Apple Logic Pro (preferred) but principles can be applied to any DAW like Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton Live, etc. This course is not as much about teaching the DAW as it is about the core principles behind writing and producing a complete piece of music.

Using Apple Logic Pro will make it easier to follow and enhance your Logic skills tremendously. You will need Headphones or speakers and enough space on your hard drive or even better an external hard drive to save your music. Please refer to the manufacturer of the software for minimum requirements.

Instructor Details

Marc Dold

Hi my name is Marc and I love the process of creating music.

As a songwriter, platinum-selling producer, but also an indie artist and Apple certified Logic Instructor, I love helping students take their projects to the next level. I enjoy coaching them how to go from demos and basic ideas to releasable and professional-sounding tracks. This is the purpose of Musical Architects.

My journey lead from recording my first crappy four-track demos in a basement in Switzerland to producing major artists in Los Angeles. From writing some basic guitar riffs in my first bands to creating music that garnered over 4000 placements in film and TV.  Teaching classical guitar students during Conservatory to instructing over 2000 students for 10 years at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA.

I always wanted to create a class that incorporates all those experiences and gives musicians a holistic course in writing and producing a complete song from start to finish. A hands-on building plan that demonstrates every step of the way, not just technically but also creatively, what we need to know to be self-sufficient artists these days.

I don’t know what you will write and produce but I am convinced that following this course will make you evolve and grow on all levels of music creation.

Wow, this is an amazing course. Marc brings a very special mix of creativity and structure together in this course. Not only does he show you his creative process and approach but he openly shares all of his musical and technical knowledge. On top of this he is constantly teaching tips for Logic Pro, which has totally upgraded my workflow and speed using the software. What I learnt helped me to advance my music production far beyond anything I could imagine. One area for consideration would be whether there be updates to the course to reflect the updates to Logic Pro in recent years. Highly recommend this course, incredible value.

Is really good actually, I thought this might be an average course on Logic Pro based stuff and not much about music prod. or teach anything song-related, BUT NO! ITS ABSOLUTELY WHAT I NEEDED! Yes its really good.

I have heard, learnt and used many of the practices shown in the course over the years - and still got stuck at times and not able to take things really to the end. This course is gluing it all together. Now I understand how all these topics connect, how I can get unstuck, and what tools and approaches I can effectively use to overcome challenges. This is helping me to take my craft to the next level. Thanks so much, Marc! You are a great musician and a great teacher!

An excellent course, very informative. Marc has an excellent style of presentation. My experience beforehand was having written a dozen songs, the lyrics and all instrumentation, and using Reaper for recording. So the first few modules had several nuggets of advice I could use, but mostly reinforced I was on the right lines. I can see how it would be even more beneficial if I'd seen this before I'd started songwriting. The main benefit for me came from the later sections, on recording vocals and better use of the software (sidechains, production, buses, mixing) where I've gathered plenty of hints and tips to make things sound better. I am undoubtedly going to be a better producer of my music after Marc's advice. Thanks!

This is quite a comprehensive course and I enjoyed it a lot while also (importantly, of course) learning quite a lot. What stood out to me was the considerate, patient, and well-organized teaching style of Marc, who is able to take the perspective of a (less experienced) student of the course, also showing and appreciating different alternatives, the occurrence of uncertainties, and emphasizing subjective tastes, creativity, etc....while still providing clear, focused structure and guidance suitable for any style or genre (for example, with multistep guides to important steps of the process). With my music, there were times, when I felt kind of lost...I was entering the course at a somewhat-intermediate level but would also recommend the course for beginners. So many important concepts (small and big) that I picked up over the years from random sources are bundled here. Did I miss something? In my personal case, I try to get better in sound selection, instrumentation, texture. So I would have been interested in more details in the change-up from the original draft with keys as the dominant sound to the new version with guitars, organ, etc. It was a difference like day and night and I really would have been interested in more details in the thought process, experimentation, also a bit in the sound design of the guitars. (I understood, though, that the basic approach was similar to what we had learned before.) There were a few similar examples where I would have liked to know more about such specific details along the way, but I also think Marc made the right choice to focus on progressing with the course instead as it is long and comprehensive enough as it is. Thanks, Marc, for a wonderful course. It was crystal clear to me as a viewer how much time and effort you put into this and my impression was that it really paid off for me as a student. I also appreciated the lovely details like metaphors, drawings, overlays for additional structuring, and of course the playful background music and sound effects. All the best to you!

Hi Marc, I can't locate the 1 downloadable resource mentioned in the intro notes and would like to know if the completed project, "another world", is available too as a file from somewhere. You've done a great job on this I'm most grateful for your time and effort. --- I have located the Musical+Architects+Syllabus.pdf and am totally satisfied.

I'm only halfway through the course and it has already exceeded my expectations. The course clocks in over 9hrs of content and covers the whole spectrum of songwriting, recording, production, etc... It's honestly worth a lot more than what is being charged. The only reason that I think someone would have given it anything but a 5 stars is it is an intermediate course and they may have been a beginner. It is jam packed with content and if you aren't at an intermediate level, it may be daunting, but not impossible. I'm certain I'll re-watch this course many times as it has so much information to take in.

By Olga Maria Kopaczyk on 2/13/2022

Great value for money! I think the content is above my level (I'm a beginner, haha), so I actually have to pause a lot and experiment, go back to my notes etc., but seeing how Marc goes through that process is very illumunating. A few things that I've enjoyed so far: - clear structure, clear aim of every section and very good quality of materials - tips that appear on the screen throughout the course - the initial Logic Crash Course - a lot of space for reflection and "playing" with options - the depth of the topic - before I signed up to this I also had a look at other available courses (of course) and all of them seem to be super short?

By Katherine Stone on 1/15/2022

Around halfway through the course, and it's a good fit for what I was looking for. Taking a tour through the complete creative process has been extremely valuable, and I actually like that it's not a step-by-step tutorial - you need to pay attention to keep up with all the handy shortcuts and techniques the instructor uses. It's not a class I'd recommend for the complete novice. Some foundation in music theory and basic DAW usage are almost certainly necessary to get the most out of the content. For someone who has been noodling with musical ideas and hasn't found a process for turning an idea into a complete song, though? It's a great structured guide to one person's process as a solid starting point.

The course is very well structured and covers a wide range of topics that come together when producing your own music. What i loved about the course was that Mark gives a very positive and encouraging feel which make the videos a pleasure to watch and makes you think of music production from a holistic perspective. I can't recommend this course enough to beginners but also advanced producers.
