Our take
Based on the ratings of 897 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in January 2024. No course pays to be reviewed.
This is a 2.6 hour, 24 lecture introduction to MySQL from Meta Brains, split into six short sections: an introduction, three parts on basic queries and operators, one on joins, and a bonus. It is pitched at people who have never touched a database. About 74,000 students have enrolled, and the rating is 4.4 from 897 reviews. There are no quizzes or coding exercises, so it works as a watch-along, not a practice course. It was last updated in January 2024.
Happy reviewers like the short lessons and the clear narration. One says it covered the basic scripting they wanted, up to and including joins, and another credits an AI voice for making it easy to follow. The complaints are sharper. Several say on-screen mistakes go unexplained, including one case where the narrator says one comparison and the code shows the opposite. Others say edits hide errors, the join table setup is skipped, and the delivery sounds like someone reading aloud. One Mac user could not get the software running, and another notes that phpMyAdmin is installed and never used again.
About one in five of the 897 ratings is three stars or fewer, and the pattern in the written complaints is consistent: slow pace, thin explanations, small errors. The narration covers what to type more than why it works. For someone who has never seen SQL, it is a low-pressure way to see the basics in an afternoon. Plan to pair it with a course that has exercises, since nothing here makes you practice.
Pros
- Lessons are broken into short chunks, which reviewers find relaxing and easy to rewatch
- Narration is described as clear and easy to follow, even by reviewers who rate it low
- Covers the basics through joins in about 2.6 hours, so it is a quick first pass
- Needs no prior database or SQL knowledge, per the requirements list
Cons
- Reviewers report spoken-versus-typed mistakes and edits that hide errors, with little explanation
- No quizzes, coding exercises, or practice tests, so there is nothing to check your learning
- Shallow on the why behind queries, and joins get only three short lectures
It's very easy to understand. I liked the sections broken down into small minutes of tutorial so it makes it very relaxing and not overwhelming.
Aimed at true beginners, but the slow pace and unexplained slips can trip up people who have never seen any SQL.

Lecturer explained slowly which is suitable for beginners, but the explanation is not enough thorough about the underlying mechanism. This thing is kinda difficult for listener to completely understand. The speed is sometimes too slow, lecturer doesn't need to speak out every character in their code.
By Brad Smith on 4/4/2024
doesn't take into account issues with getting the software running correctly I.e I ran into issues on Mac and could not proceed. Once up and running the course is easy to follow along with and a good refresh for me
By Kevin Obniala on 3/23/2024
The last part tutorial isn't really understandable, we use jointable to join from a foreign key from another table and she deleted it that makes everything confusing
By Alejandro Jair García Jiménez on 10/18/2023
