Our take
Based on the ratings of 200 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in August 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
Valentin Despa's course is a three-hour tour of DeepSeek's models for people who want to use them, not train them. It covers the V3 and R1 split, distilled models, censorship, the chat apps, running models locally with Ollama and LM Studio, and the DeepSeek API. The syllabus shows 45 lectures across seven sections, and about 56 minutes goes to the API. Around 1,300 students have enrolled.
Reviewers like the clear explanations. One says the teaching makes V3 and R1 easy to follow even for beginners, and another picked up terms such as distillation, chain of thought and MoE. Of 200 ratings, 96 are five stars and 84 are four, with only five at two stars and none at one. The complaints are mild. One reviewer wants more hands-on projects, another found section 6 rushed for the tools it introduces, and one calls the course a bit long.
The local section is only three lectures and 16 minutes, and the requirements list a powerful GPU, so expect to watch rather than follow along on a modest laptop. The course was last updated in August 2025, so check the API steps against DeepSeek's current docs. As a short, paid primer it suits curious developers well. If you want projects or depth on building apps, look elsewhere.
Pros
- Clear explanations of V3 vs R1, distillation, chain of thought and MoE
- About 56 minutes on the DeepSeek API, the most useful part for developers
- Covers Ollama, LM Studio, privacy and censorship, not just the chat app
- Short at 3 hours, with 96 of 200 ratings at five stars
Cons
- Few hands-on projects, and reviewers ask for more real-world app building
- Section 6 moves fast for the tools it introduces, per one reviewer
- Local running needs a powerful GPU and gets only three short lectures
The course was well-structured and covered all the key concepts effectively. The instructor explained topics clearly with practical examples.
All Levels, with no prior AI knowledge needed, but running models locally calls for a powerful GPU.

Valentin Despa
I teach IT professionals what I wish I'd known earlier.
My foundation is built on years in the trenches as an Agile Enterprise Software Developer, engineering solutions for everything from fast-paced start-ups and SMBs to large global corporations. I hold recognized roles as an AWS Community Builder, Postman Supernova, and GitLab Hero, alongside a deep history of securing and building major open-source projects.
For over a decade, I've taken that real-world experience and quietly built one of the largest learning communities around API tooling, test automation, and DevOps practices. What started as a side YouTube channel turned into hundreds of thousands of learners, conference talks, and team workshops at companies most IT professionals have heard of.
The thread through all of it is the same: take something that looks intimidating and break it down so anyone can understand it in plain language.
Lately, I've been spending more time on practical AI in the workplace. I look at how teams can leverage AI for both everyday knowledge work and hands-on IT engineering, like coding and testing. I focus on cutting through the hype to figure out how AI actually helps IT professionals get work done, build, and ship faster. New formats, same approach.

Very informative for effectively communicating course recipients on LLM 360-degree but at a quasi-technical level. A bit long, though
By Helen Fung on 3/19/2025
I found this course to be really informative and helpful. It provided valuable insights into DeepSeek, and I learned a lot about its application and potential. The examples, particularly those involving AI reasoning limits—like the color box and the typo city location scenario — were great and really highlighted the nuances of AI capabilities. Section 6 was a bit more challenging. While it delved deeper into other libraries and tools, I felt the time allocated didn’t quite match the complexity, which made it a bit harder to follow. Despite this, I really appreciated how each topic was kept to concise, manageable sections. The overall course was well-structured, and I definitely gained a lot of new knowledge.

Yes it increased my knowledge within AI and learned a lot of new technical terms such as: distillation, regurgitates, chain of thought, MoE.
By Nityananda Ghosh on 2/3/2025
The course touches upon some of the fundamental concepts of LLMs. The training, architecture, comparison of reasoning model with standard models were explained very well. I would like Valentin to add more practical usage of LLMs in building applications and solving real world use cases problem. Thanks for bringing out the course.
