Course Description
My Class is designed to help you turn your uninspiring photographs into paintings to be proud of. I will demonstrate techniques that help you plan your painting to get maximum light and colour from dull photographs. This workshop is for beginners and intermediate painters, I encourage you to ask questions at any time throughout the lesson to enable you to get the most from this course.
Together we will produce a value sketch which will help you plot the shadows and create the values necessary to establish the feeling light in your work.
We then move onto the painting itself. A reference image is provided as a download for you to work from. We then paint step by step breaking the painting down into eight parts. This enables you to grasp every stage before moving onto the next lesson. If you are unable to understand any part of the instruction I encourage you to contact me. This gives me the opportunity to help you and clarify parts of the painting you may find challenging.
What Will You Learn
- How to turn a dull scene into a painting full of light
- How to paint loosely and confidently in watercolor
- You will learn how to simplify shapes
- How to use a simplified palette of colors to achieve colorful results
- How to mix colors, keeping them fresh and bright
- How to create a value sketch prior to painting

Instructor moved to quickly. This is a beginner course. Trying to mix a color, I missed the next steps. Got tired of going back in the video. It was like he was in a hurry, not sure why. Could have been a good lesson but got tired of trying to catch up. Not enough explanation of what brushes he was using, and why, etc… I’m sure other beginners were frustrated as well.

It’s a great step by step course and you can easily get the same result as the teacher as explanations are very clear. Audio could be a bit better (couldn’t help but notice the washing machine going in the background - it’s definitely not loud and the video is totally audible, I’m just very sensitive to noise).

First off, I'm a Yank and just have to say that I love Patrick Ley-Greaves' accent! Fun to listen to! His easy style put me at ease. I watched the entire course but only did the drawing along with him. Now I am ready to watch again and paint along. Patrick's loose style is wonderful and impressionistic. I especially like how he used so few colors to create the lovely scene, depicting a beautiful sunny day. I have an issue with control right now so I may not allow myself as much freedom but I sure am going to try! Thanks for a great lesson!!!

Absolutely excellent. I learned more from this video with this teacher than I have with many other "in-person" lessons with other teachers. The step-by-step approach was so helpful as was the mixing of colors that the instructor walked us through and demonstrated throughout the demonstration. And the finished product was beautiful. I will refer back to this lesson and will have another go-at-it with at least 2 or 3 more practices on this particular scene. I am going to look for more video lessons by this teacher. Thank you!!

Early days but, so far, excellent! I am totally new to painting (other than Art 'O' Level GCE about 65 years ago!!!). I love your relaxed style and feel as if you are right here along side me with advice. Hope you don't mind me making this early suggestion but just one small point. It would be helpful if there could be a small thumb nail of the original photo in view as you are sketching the next stage. I need to do something to make the time pass before Corona is defeated. Kind regards David, Hampshire UK

That was a very pleasant relaxing tutorial. The only addition I would add to the course, is a bit more explanation as to the underlying rationale of adding a non-existent light source and how it affects the various elements in the photo. In that way, I could use my own reference photo and figure out how to realistically transform the middling color values. I enjoyed it very much.

This the second of Patrick’s on-line courses that I have taken in a week. I found the first one brilliant and instructive in so many ways, and this one was equally special. From what looked like a rather boring photo of a couple of barns Patrick applied skill and imagination to transform it into an interesting summer scene. Each step in the process is explained and culminates in the final touches of shadow which transforms the painting. As a novice painter I feel I’ve really progressed.

This course is perfect for me. I am an absolute beginner. The information is straightforward and easy to understand. There are no special techniques to confuse me. The information provided is sufficient and yet still challenging and Patrick's easygoing approach is a pleasure to follow. I will watch again and follow along then try painting scenes of my own photos. Thank you.

First of all, I have not yet actually painted along with Patrick in this series. I just watched the entire series and am planning to undertake the actual work later this week. However, I know his style from his YouTube videos, and this instructional video series was so wonderful. Patrick’s presentation style is natural, accessible and unassuming. It’s obvious he is an accomplished artist but he doesn’t come across as a snob. I learned so much, particularly about varying the colors within a shape, keeping the palette simple and harmonious, and creating the light through the darks. His tip about softening many of the hard edges was an eye-opener for me. I also appreciated his method of creating a values sketch before committing the drawing to the watercolor paper. I highly recommend this course!
