Our take

Based on the ratings of 1,057 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in May 2021. No course pays to be reviewed.

This is a single-camera course, not a general photography class. Jeremy Bayston, a picture editor for British newspapers for nearly 30 years, walks through the Canon EOS 2000D, 1500D and Rebel T7 (the same body sold under three names) button by button, then moves into modes, effects, lenses, flash and video sound. At 19 lectures and 4.4 hours, it is short and built to be watched with the camera in hand, which is how reviewers describe using it.

Reviewers praise the pace and clarity: one calls it well structured with excellent tone and clarity, another describes it as idiot proof. More than one reviewer says it worked as a refresher after time away from the hobby. The main complaint is the opposite of a compliment on pace, one reviewer felt it moved a little fast and had to keep replaying sections, and another reviewer mentions keeping the course around to refer back to rather than finishing it in one sitting. One review flagged video buffering, though that reads more like a playback glitch than a course problem.

The course was last updated in 2021, so menu screens should still match unless Canon pushed a firmware refresh since. It sits closer to a manual than a creative photography curriculum, there are no projects or assignments, just explanation and demonstration across one long section. For anyone who owns this specific Canon body and wants to stop guessing at settings, the rating (4.7 from over a thousand reviews) backs it up as a safe, narrow pick.

Best forNew Canon 2000D/1500D/Rebel T7 owners who want every button and menu explained
Skip it ifYou own a different camera body or already shoot in full manual mode

Pros

  • Goes through every button, dial and menu tab on the 2000D/1500D/T7 specifically
  • Taught by a 30-year newspaper picture editor, and reviewers like his clear delivery
  • Short at 4.4 hours, easy to watch alongside the actual camera
  • Covers video and sound recording settings, not just stills

Cons

  • Only useful if you own this exact camera body, no wider photography theory
  • Last updated in 2021, so a firmware update could shift a menu screen or two
  • One section, no quizzes or projects, and at least one reviewer found the pace too fast
The course is very well structured, the lessons are not too long, and most importantly, the tone and clarity of what is being said are excellent

Built for true beginners who just bought the camera, but detailed enough to help lapsed hobbyists refresh their memory

I'm trying to get back into photography since Covid. My Canon EOS80D packed up and now the 2000D is my replacement. I'm really pleased to have discovered this course as I needed a complete refresher and an understanding of the new Camera. The course is literally idiot proof. Presented clearly and at a good pace. Extremely thorough. I'm especially pleased that I have the course for referring back to if I forget to do something that seems really obvious for example setting the white balance. It's so easy to think you know everything and this course was purchased with the intention of avoiding bad habits. I really just need to get out there now and start taking photographs.

I thoroughly enjoyed Jeremy 's Canon REBEL T7 Camera Course at Udemy. Using his lectures and Notes, I feel confident to have the tools to learn about the manual settings of t Rebel T7 camera. I learned to use the camera beyond auto mode and am now determined to master the manual settings of the camera. I look forward to take his Canon Lens course at Udemy.

This course was very informative. I am in the very beginning stages of using a digital camera so I had trouble understanding some of the terms, but I was able to key into the settings that I knew I would use most. I also learned not to be afraid to try different settings. Very glad I took the course.

By Ed Conroy on 8/31/2021

Great course on learning the various aspects of my camera. I am now taking a more advanced course on using the different modes, depth of field, aperature, and light settings. I will go back to this course from time to time to refresh my memory on the different settings and how to get there. Thanks! Ed Conroy - beginner.

I found the course to be an excellent introduction to digital photography. All the subjects were explained clearly and I will definitely be using the course as a valuable reference resource as I develop my photography skills .

As an EOS 2000D owner I can say that I have learned a lot about my camera thanks to Jeremy's course. Jeremy is a really good instructor, you also feel the great experience he has. I'm really excited about the course, in fact I bought Jeremy's other course too. Thank you for making this course. Luca

Great class! So much more informative than just reading through the manual. Jeremy adds a lot of general photography tips and suggestions along the way that I enjoyed. I particularly liked the examples where he shows the same exact shot but with different camera settings. The night time photography section was great too. I wish he would do an entire class dedicated to night photography with the Canon 2000D (hint, hint).

By Lee Riley on 8/31/2020

Excellent instructor. I'm at hobbyist level and don't think I could have learned how to operate the Canon T7 by using the manual alone. Excellent feature of the course is that I can return time and again to get answers to information I have forgotten. Will definitely consider the course on lenses after I'm more familiar with the camera.

By Heather Shearer on 2/1/2020

yes I think it was a good fit. I love taking pictures but I have never owned camera that I could manipulate the ways of taking them. So yes this is great. The only thing I can think of having you go over would be the very basic definitions of the 3 variables, aperture, ISO and shutter speed. In the beginning of the program. Vey helpful, I loved it. Thank you

Jeremy you did a great job designing this course. I will be honest when I say that this is the first Udemy course I have ever completed from start to finish. Thanks to the lessons learned I feel confident in navigating my Canon camera and although I use a T7i, the lessons you taught on the T7 also applied to my upgraded camera model. One suggestion I have is to insert little quizzes to test the student's knowledge and refresh their memory as they go through the course. Otherwise this was just a fantastic course and I'll be joining my first local photography group this Friday. Thank you! - Adam Johnson
