A free two hour introduction to Photoshop aimed at people who want to mock up a simple web page, not retouch photos. Carl Heaton, who runs Web Courses, walks through nine short sections: new documents, brushes, shapes, layers and groups, moving and resizing, blend modes, text, and a final 31 minute build of a clean page layout. The syllabus shows 19 lectures and no quizzes or assignments. It suits absolute beginners who have never opened Photoshop and want the basics in one sitting before touching anything harder.
Reviewers like the pace and the plain structure. One calls it short, sweet and simple, and another says it took away all their initial fears about the program. The big complaint is age. The course was recorded in Photoshop CS5 around 2011 and last updated in 2015, so the menus, icons and panels do not match current Photoshop CC, and one student says some linked files and websites no longer exist. Lower ratings also note the practice files are low resolution and that the web design part is more copy and paste than real design work. No design principles are taught.
It costs nothing, and at two hours it asks for little time, which is why it still has around 225,000 students and a 4.5 rating from nearly 6,800 reviews. Next to the longer paid Photoshop courses it sits beside, it is a warm up rather than a real alternative. One reviewer points out that Heaton has a newer CC version of the same course, and that is probably the better pick if the old interface bothers you. Take this one if free and quick matters more than current.

Short, sweet and simple. The structure of the content is done in a systematic manner, and you will find no problems understanding what he is doing in the video.
Listed for all levels but really for first timers; the only requirement is basic computer skills and it stays at that level.

3. The Key to Custom Shapes

4. The Core of Photoshop, Layers and Groups
Layers are the most important part of Photoshop, as they allow you to make changes to specific areas on the screen. You can further group these layers together to make it more manageable when you're designing.
5. The Shortcuts to Moving and Resizing
In this lesson we're going to be looking at how to move layers around the screen and how to resize them using the free transform tool, something you will use a lot in your designs.
6. Getting the Most from Zooming and Panning
We are going to look at how to look around your design and see the details by using the zoom tool. So in this lesson we look into two very important features of using Photoshop daily, zooming and panning.
7. Creating Cool Effects with Blending Modes
Blending modes are when you have two layers interacting with each other and effects are different things you can apply to single layer, things like shadows, inners shadows, gradients etc.
8. Text, Love it or Hate it
Texts are one of the trickiest things in Photoshop, reason being that its not really made to do it. So in this lesson, we're going to find easy ways to work with Photoshop and texts.
9. Clean Web Page Design using Photoshop
We are going to be creating a webpage design in Photoshop. We are going to use grids to organize everything and get things in line and various other tricks to make the perfect web page.

The course was helpful in introducing the basics of Photoshop to me. However, it was extremely outdated (being nine years old), and some of the files and websites he mentioned did not even exist anymore. I sometimes had a hard time following along because his Photoshop and mine were completely different from each other. Technology-related courses like this one should constantly be updated, in my opinion.

I found the course very enlightening and to the point. It provides step-by-step the basics of Photoshop and after finishing this course you can start using Photoshop effectively. The instructor's guidelines were very detailed and comprehensive. I would definetely recommend this course if someone wanted to learn the Photoshop essentials.

I loved the tutorial. It's free but and it offers so much value and substance without being boring, that's why I was able to complete it. I think the instructor was great. He's obviously an expert and he's clear and concise with his explanations and shortcuts. I hope he can share more free tutorials and more advanced trainings for hopefuls like me looking to add skills as a freelancer.

This is a great course for anyone new to Photoshop! I use Photoshop for my job, mostly to edit photos. I took this course to learn more about designing web pages and other documents using shapes, texts, etc. I learned quite a bit and found many of the shortcuts very useful. I am self-taught in Photoshop, and many online tutorials go too quickly for me, skipping some of the most basic information. This one covers all the basics!

This is very easy to follow course for beginner learning Photoshop. One of the best course I have taken so far. I am not a tech guru, but the instructions of this course is easy to follow. I recommend this course to everybody who is interested to learn Photoshop.

I very much enjoyed the course. The only problem was it appeared the course was generated on an older version of Photoshop. The version in your lecture series did not look at ALL like the Photoshop on my screen! It took a while -- with plenty of stopping, rewinding and starting again -- to figure out the differences and move forward. Still, I was able to complete the course and am pleased not only with the results -- but the curriculum as well.
