Course Description

In this course, we will break down 25 progressive sight-reading pieces in three unique ways:

1) intervallic analysis

2) rhythmic analysis

3) practice videos

By isolating and strengthening each skill (intervals, rhythms, patterns) with dedicated videos for each example, we will train our eyes to rapidly recognize shapes and patterns, increasing speed, accuracy and efficiency in reading.

With 5-10 minutes of daily reading, students who are consistent with practice can expect to finish the entire course within a month, and will have gained a solid foundation not only in sight-reading, but will become more independent in practice with a specific methodology to tackle more challenging scores.

The quality is excellent. This method of sight reading, especially the intervalic identification, is new to me, which was exactly what I was looking for. Would highly recommend. It starts out very basic and gradually the pieces get a little more difficult but so far they’re all in five finger position (I’m on exercise 21/25) so I hope Sam does another one for more complicated music.

I'm a musician who wants to improve my sightreading skills. The teacher does a good job explaining the patterns to recognize and how they cross over into subsequent exercises. Interesting resource. He really just goes from one exercise to the next though and I would've appreciated a bigger breadth of pattern recognition tips instead of sticking to one resource and going through it exercise by exercise.

I started last year and gave up after a week because I did not build up my fundamental bass clef skill. A year later after some hard work, I decided to give it another shot. I found this time I do learn a lot from the instructor. It is an excellent course.

The instructor explains things clearly and has provided helpful external resources that I can also use for self-study and day-to-day progress, such as an app I can practise with on my commute. So far I’ve found the course well structured and supportive for my learning.

Brilliant course. Changed my approach to reading music and took my understanding to a new level. Really helped me to improve at something that for a long time, felt like too steep and slow of a climb.

I thought it would be really hard to learn sight reading. Sam's calm and consistent teaching is really helping me!

good, but in my view it totally overpromises....the claim that in a mere month you will sight-read music AT THE PIANO to any kind of even very basic level, is simply unrealistic, I am an experienced musician and in my experience it took me over a YEAR to start to finally see noticeable results; at the time I researched and learned all I could about this musical super power (it is simply the most important one to have for any musician) and I never came across any music teacher who made the claim that one could learn sight reading in a month at the piano, this is simply a fanciful claim, or either you are a genius.

I enjoyed this course very much. I liked the systematic, gradual way in which musical elements were introduced, and I found Sam's approach of first identifying intervals and then identifying rhythms, before trying to combine both hands, very helpful. As the exercises became progressively harder, I sometimes wished he had set us a slower tempo first (when combining the two hands in the practice video), as I found it hard to keep up, until I had practiced both hands together a number of times first. I couldn't figure out how to play the video at half-speed! So I ended up re-playing the same video many times before getting all the elements right. But that said, I very much enjoyed the course, and look forward to a follow-up course focusing on Exercises 26 to 50! Thank you so much for putting this course together.

I am an adult beginner who has previously dabbled. I think there are some elements which could be better introduced for me as a novice. Skips and steps for example.. And context would be nice. Why is this needed?

This course has helped me increase my reading skills. The pace is relaxed and not overwhelming. It started too easy for my current skill level, but in a way I'm glad for that, as it helped me focus on strengthening individual skills (intervals and rhythm) before doing the actual sight-reading. The difficulty seems to really increase around #20, so I needed to slow those down more than others before reading them well. I like how I can practice the reading examples without printing out the score, but I've also found it helpful to print out a copy of the exercises to practice intervals. Overall I am satisfied with this course and feel like I have structure for my reading now.
