John Robson

John has been playing the guitar since the age of 11. He began his guitar journey on a Woolworths Top 20 guitar, plugged into the mic socket of his Amstrad “music centre” (as stereos were called back then).

Before long he was playing in school bands and started gigging at the tender age of 14. On finishing school he trained as a radio officer for the merchant navy.

Then, after a brief spell working in a test lab for a Japanese electronics company, (whilst plying his trade as a guitarist for hire on the local circuit by night), John “turned professional” as a guitarist in the early 1990s.

Since then he's played in a hugely diverse range of bands, from top-40 covers bands & classic country acts through to alt-rock indie groups & blues bands. He's also carved out a reputation as a session player & sideman for various touring & recording musicians in his native Teesside.

John's influences are varied & include “all the usual suspects” as he puts it, plus a few you may not expect... Eric Clapton; Gary Moore; Jeff Beck; Kenny Burrell; Miles Davis; Joe Satriani; Edward Elgar & Chuck Berry to name but a few.

These days, John puts food on the table by teaching a select group of students from his home studio in Redcar, as well as recording his own brand of original, melodic, bluesy rock guitar music, which is available across all major platforms & via his website

nothing new learned in this course

By Randy Czarnecki on 3/1/2025

Excellent introduction to lead playing. I'm a keyboard player trying to branch out a bit but have only managed to rise to chord playing on guitar. John's relaxed and logical teaching style provides a no-pressure introduction into one corner of the vast arena of guitar soloing, but enough to grasp and sink your teeth into. This is exactly what I was looking for. It's a short course that a slightly-post-novice guitar player can complete in under an hour, and come away with an understanding of what it will take to achieve real skill and proficiency. And this course offers the option of great depth too, should you decide to pursue center stage stardom. One word of caution: your fingers may get sore!

Thank you very much John! I loved this course. I have been a guitar enthusiast for many years and I also knew the typical pentatonic scale patterns in "Am" but I never knew how to use it very well, however, I feel that with this course I learned a kind of secret trick for improvisation and solos that my songs needed. John Robson conveys the ideas in a very clear way and the course is structured in a way that is very easy to follow. Very inspiring, now I'm going for "Play MORE Lead Guitar The Easy Way!"

Great introduction course for a beginning (approaching intermediate) to intermediate player. I had been playing for years and after a long hiatus, I recently decided to pick up the guitar again. I picked up this course to help get me back into the groove again. John's approach to explaining the pentatonic scales I believe is unique and helped me think of ways to tie the patterns together in ways that was not discussed when I first learned them.

I've been playing guitar for years, primarily as a rhythm player and was looking for a course to start improving my lead playing. This course was excellent, just what I needed to get a head start. Right to the point. No filler. Didn't drone on and on. Just really good instruction from beginning to end. I've already started putting it into practice and I love the backing tracks. Great stuff! Just bought his second course too.

I really became informative as lead guitar is begun. The lesson is valuable but I strongly recommend learning on an electric guitar , not the acoustic that I was using. I was too lazy to do the hook up. I loved the video.. thank you John. I will be back for more. I played when classic rock was new. I played piano at 12 Chopin's Polonaise. John, maybe not the best credentials. You are a really good if not great teacher . Wish you healthy and well! AA++ I am 62 years old . Thank you

Well what can i say, This course has made my guitar playing step up a level, i now have a better understanding of how to turn a pentatonic scale into a solo! I already had a good understanding of the scales but i couldn't get my head around turning them into a solo. Thanks to John and his calm, confident and Friendly approach to guitar tuition, i now have a better understanding of the guitar fret board! People buy from people and i will certainly be enrolling in further courses with John. Dan O'Sullivan.

I've had Skype guitar lessons from John in the past (which I plan to resume in the future) and the content John teaches in this course is new to me as it showcases a scale outside of the pentatonic boxes that's proving very useful, and having this course here on Udemy for keeps means I can always refer back to it - and the downloadable resource material - in any situation, so I can definitely recommend this course to set you on your way to lead playing with confidence!... 5/5

Excellent course, especially for those who are just getting started playing lead guitar parts. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years. I played rock music in my early years and was pretty good at improvisation. But I have to admit that I did not understand the theory behind what I was doing because I played mostly by ear, just developing and memorizing lead licks. After a thirty year hiatus from electric guitar, I decided to dive back in. I've been watching John Robson's YouTube channel for over a year and learning a lot there. When I saw his two courses advertised, I purchased both. Already, I've learned a good deal about the theory behind lead guitar playing from this basic course. Looking forward to the next course on the modes for some more advanced theory. Thanks John. Please develop more courses like this! Regards, Steve Lamm Minnesota, USA
