Steve Stine teaches guitar at North Dakota State University, and this is his course on modern or fusion blues. It starts from the 12-bar form and the I-IV-V progression, then moves into 9th and 6th extensions, hybrid and dominant pentatonic scales, shape bending, parallel key soloing, and altered dominant and half diminished scales. It runs about six hours. The description says plainly that this is not a beginner course and that some foundation on the guitar is needed.

Reviewers praise how clearly Stine explains things. One says he organizes the material in a very logical way. Another says the lessons come with direct sound checks and finger positions, and a third says he teaches things that can be played in a band that night. Complaints are few. One reviewer wants a slightly slower tempo, and another says lectures sometimes run 15 minutes or more, which is awkward when pausing to take notes. The one low review in the sample says modules 5 to 7 are thin on application and found the delivery a bit condescending.

Steve Stine

If you haven't heard of Steve before, just know that he's very well known at North Dakota State University and is a highly sought-after Professor of Modern Guitar.

After earning his music education degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead, he went on to play in literally dozens of bands over the last 16 years touring the U.S. and England. He's been a studio guitarist for radio, television and various recording projects. And he even acted in a movie once.

He's taught private, group, and online guitar instruction for over 25 years to literally thousands of students. Many of his students attend colleges nationwide to study music and play in bands, notably, Shannon Curfman, who performs withKid Rock.

He's taught music at Red River Valley Montesorri school for over 10 years. And was guitar instructor at Elevate Rock School in Fargo, North Dakota. And despite the tattoos, long hair, and shredder-style guitar, he's a family-man. And even finds time to volunteer his talents to plays guitar in his church.

This is a truly brilliant course. Steve teaches many concepts in digestible nuggets with clear explanations. I have too many courses where the instructor plays several level 1 examples and then hands you a 5 page pdf with a level 5 playalong to figure out yourself. Steve actually teaches. This is one of my favorite blues guitar courses now.

First, Steve is a great instructor. Extremely knowledgeable, skilled and personable. This course provides endless things to think about and discover. He does a great job of explaining how and when to use 7th's, 9th's, Hybrid Scales, Pentatonics, Dominants, etc., AND when and how to mix them together. This was a great learning moment for me. I always felt very "tied" to a certain type of scale when a certain chord structure was being played, which made my soloing get really bland after a while. This has helped free me up a lot, and really opened the door to endless possibilities. He also provides print outs for each Module, which is also really helpful, and helps follow along. This course will leave you with months and years of information, on top of some really cool licks that he shows. I, personally, am going to go back and do the course a second time, just to help absorb everything even better. A lot of great information in this one. Definitely recommend. Great course, Steve. Thanks!
