Course Description

Looking to get ECBA®, CCBA®, or CBAP® certified or recertified? - This course qualifies for 2.5 PD Hours/CDUs!

THE DEMAND FOR PRODUCT OWNERS CONTINUES TO EXPAND AS MORE AND MORE ORGANIZATIONS ADOPT AGILE SCRUM.  THIS COURSE WILL TEACH YOU THE FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS YOU NEED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT OWNER.

The Product Owner (PO) is the most critical role in Agile Scrum. They are responsible to talk with the business, understanding their wants and needs, and then collaborating with the Development Team to create a product – a piece of software, a service, or a process – that satisfies those identified needs.

In this course, we prepare you for that Product Owner position. We’ll teach you about the mindset, the responsibilities, the activities, the skills, best practices, and the core concepts you’ll need to know to be a successful Product Owner (PO).

Why become a Product Owner in the first place?

1. Potential Earnings – Let’s be honest it’s the main reason we work in the first place. So, you’ll be happy to hear that a typical Product Owner (PO) earns over $100,000 USD per year. And that is only the average. Work hard, continue to increase the value you provide through study and training, and just imagine how much you could end up making!

2. Job Growth – With the abundance of organizations adopting Agile and Scrum, the Product Owner role has benefited with a 24% annual growth (US) and being declared an emerging job by LinkedIn. There is no better time than now to learn the fundamentals needed to be a Product Owner.

3. Career Springboard – The skills you learn as a Product Owner are crucial to a host of many other professions, everything from Business to IT. This career path isn’t just a job, it’s an investment in your future, no matter where life takes you.

4. Fulfilling Outcomes – Being able to positively influence and make decisions that shape the value a product provides to customers, generates a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. And this is probably a big reason the average Product Owner is highly satisfied with their job.

5. It’s Never Boring – Business and customer needs are always changing and evolving, and your product needs to stay up-to-speed. This could mean new features, a change in the workflow, an updated customer experience, or adjusting your product to meet the needs of a new market segment. It is never boring because there is always additional value that can be provided.

So if you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding career, I highly encourage you to take a serious look into becoming a Product Owner!

The BA Guide’s TEACH, SHOW, DO

This course makes use of The BA Guide’s TEACH, SHOW, DO technique – a method I’ve developed over my years of experience in the industry training and managing business analysis and product owner professionals. This technique will help ensure you with total comprehension of the topic at hand and maximum information retention long after you've completed the course.

  • TEACH – You first learn the concept, in detail, from the ground up. But I won’t simply teach you the concept in isolation – you’ll learn HOW and WHEN to use it too.

  • SHOW – Once you fully understand the concept, we enhance that by walking you step-by-step through real-world examples – so you can see exactly how the concept would pan out if you were to apply it in the real world.

  • DO – Firmly cement everything you’ve learned so far and put your new knowledge to the test by completing the included activities and quizzes. Validate you’ve fully understood the concept and greatly increase your ability to retain the information you’ve learned.

Hello! My name is Jeremy Aschenbrenner, but many know me better as The BA Guide, and I'm happy you are here.

I’m a veteran Business Analyst with thousands of projects completed throughout my career. I've managed business analysis projects for companies in diverse industries including health care, telecom, automotive, transportation, consumer packaged goods, car rental agency, food and beverage, financial services, consulting, and more.

Through personal experience, I quickly learned that business analysis can be confusing and even intimidating. There’s endless business jargon, technical terms, techniques, and methodologies to learn, and countless visual diagrams, artifacts, elicitation sessions, interfaces, and KPIs to wrap your head around. I’ve been there and learned all of that. Many years ago, I also learned a valuable lesson about myself: I really enjoy teaching others. This was the inspiration for The BA Guide.

This course was a great match for me as I continue learning Agile and Scrum. It helped me understand the Product Owner role, Scrum Master role, Development Team responsibilities, Scrum events, artifacts, and stakeholder engagement. The examples and quiz questions helped reinforce the material and made the concepts easier to remember. I especially found the stakeholder and Product Owner sections helpful because they connect directly to communication, prioritization, and delivering value in real work situations.

The content of the lecture is good. But it would be easy to connect with the lecture if it were led by using a sample project. I am sure everyone understands that they will never encounter the same scenarios as the sample project. But this way, one can have a better understanding of the concepts and material.

Being only in the middle of the course, I can say that course has been built in very understandable way and provides valuable insights.

By Rachid Sila on 12/23/2025

Overall, I found the course to be of average quality, but well-suited for beginners who are planning to transition into a Product Owner role. It provides a solid introductory foundation. That said, I have two crucial comments—framed as both questions and suggestions—that I believe could further improve the course content and learning experience: 1) Project Mindset vs. Product Mindset In the course, a distinction was made between a Project Mindset and a Product Mindset, with the Product Owner being positioned as more important because they focus on delivering value, while the Project Manager was described as mainly focusing on output (scope, time, and cost). From my experience, this feels somewhat simplified. Project Managers are also strongly accountable for value delivery, especially through stakeholder alignment, benefits realization, and change management. In complex initiatives involving multiple development teams, Project Managers often work very closely with Product Owners to ensure value is achieved at scale. Could you clarify whether the intent was to highlight a difference in primary accountability rather than to imply that Project Managers are not value-focused? How should we best understand the complementary roles of Project and Product thinking in real-world organizations? 2) Product Manager vs. Product Owner I noticed that the course did not explicitly compare the roles of Product Manager and Product Owner. Given that these roles are often confused or used differently across organizations, I believe this distinction is crucial for learners. Could you elaborate on the key differences and overlaps between Product Manager and Product Owner, particularly in terms of strategic versus tactical responsibilities, ownership of vision, and stakeholder alignment? It would be helpful to understand in which contexts these roles are separate and when they are combined.

By Alex Reinhardt on 11/7/2025

Very helpful, broke the concepts down into simple building blocks. Real-word examples helped put things into perspective.

By Ayoub Sammour on 10/29/2025

it is excellent match to what I am doing as a product Owner, where I continuously getting feedback from Stake holders and Selected Clients after Demos, work closely with developers to prioritize and clarify user stories.

By Marc Toulon on 10/17/2025

In our organization we don't follow the Product Owner principles strictly. And while I push back on the "value add" for all work until executives drive the work and priority we are going to continue being in a trap and overwhelmed because if everything is a priority then nothing is a priority. I'm concerned about work quality slippage.

By Ryan Stout on 10/8/2025

This course offers an excellent foundation for anyone stepping into the Product Owner role. It effectively illustrates how the PO collaborates with various stakeholders and teams, providing a clear understanding of responsibilities and workflows.

By Winston A Lopez on 10/7/2025

Great walk through of material regarding the PO role and their interactions with team members, stakeholders, and customers/users. Jeremy gave great examples and simple explanations on how to approach and know the tools that a PO can use to assist the team. Highly recommend for those new in the position as I am and wanting to become more effective as a PO.

By MBANGE NJI Edmond on 6/27/2022

The course was great. The instructor explained the concepts with simple language and took clear examples. His exposés were short, comprehensive and straight to the point
