What A Scrum Master Actually Does

The Scrum Master is accountable for the effectiveness of the Scrum Team. That means you coach people, you remove impediments, and you help the organisation understand why the rules exist.

The job is not administration. You will spend your time on conversations that are difficult, and the Scrum Guide gives you the ground to stand on.

Companies hire Scrum Masters in software, finance, marketing, and hardware, and many of them ask for a certification. A certification proves you know the rules. This course gives you the rules and the practice behind them.

Agile Foundations And The Scrum Framework

You start with Agile and Scrum. You will separate an adaptive approach from a predictive one, see Scrum at a high level, learn the five Scrum Values in real situations, work through the Agile Manifesto and its twelve principles, and understand iterative and incremental development.

Then you learn the accountabilities. You will cover cross-functionality and self-management, and the characteristics of the Scrum Master, the Developers, and the Product Owner.

Next come the Scrum events. You will study timeboxing, the Sprint and its purpose, Sprint Planning and the three topics it covers, the Daily Scrum, the Sprint Review, the Sprint Retrospective, and feedback loops.

The artifacts follow. You will learn the Product Backlog, the Sprint Backlog, the Increment, the Product Goal, the Sprint Goal, and the Definition of Done, including who crafts it, whether it is mandatory, and when it can change.

Practices Teams Use Around Scrum

Some tools are common in Scrum teams but are not part of the framework. You need to know the difference, and the exam expects it.

You will learn Story Points and how teams use them, Planning Poker and the anchoring bias it removes, burndown and burnup charts, the cone of uncertainty, technical debt, and code refactoring.

One Full Example Inside Jira

You then watch a Scrum Team at work inside Jira, so the rules stop being abstract.

You will see how to create a Product Backlog and a Sprint Backlog, how to write User Stories, how tasks get assigned, and how to write a Sprint Goal.

You will also see a high-priority process improvement and how the Scrum Master resolves impediments, an example of the Definition of Done with updates, an example of Acceptance Criteria, and the difference between the two.

Exam Preparation And Difficult Situations

You will look at the top reasons people fail the Scrum Master level 1 exam, and what to do instead. You will also cover the Scrum rules that never change, scaling Scrum, and the Definition of Ready.

Two full practice exams follow, with randomized questions and answers, so you can take them more than once and still get a fair result.

The course closes with judgment. I present fifteen difficult scenarios and the course of action I would take in each one, with the reasoning behind it.
