Kosh Sarkar's course is a short, focused walk through Advanced Roadmaps, the planning tool included with Jira Premium on Cloud. It runs about four hours over 34 lectures in three sections: setup, a sample plan, then a bigger plan for an invented product. It assumes working knowledge of Jira and agile terms. The thread running through it is the iron triangle of scope, time and resources, and how to juggle them into believable release dates. Product managers, team leads and people weighing the tool for their team are the intended audience.

Reviewers like the delivery. They describe it as easy to digest, well paced and clearly structured, and a couple liked being able to try each step in their own Jira as they went. One calls the instructor thorough and knowledgeable, and notes he is upfront about bugs and glitches in the tool itself. Another wanted a Kanban example without sprint planning. The complaint that matters is age. The last update was February 2022, and a French reviewer says it no longer matches Jira, while another calls the interface very old.

Over 5,400 of the 6,177 ratings are four or five stars, so the teaching holds up even if the screens do not. A reviewer who took it recently says the UI had shifted a little but the main concepts still helped. That is a fair summary. Treat it as a way to learn how plans, scheduling and constraints fit together, and expect to hunt for a few menus that moved. It is a sensible starting point, not a current click-by-click guide.

This course walks through all the core features and functionality of Advanced Roadmaps - JIRA’s project planning and agile road-mapping tool, that is now available with Jira Premium.

The tool (previously know as the popular add-on, Portfolio) has proven to be so popular and useful, that it was taken over by Atlassian themselves, and is now included with a Jira Premium subscription on Cloud.

Advanced Roadmaps works off the iron triangle of planning which defines scope, time and resources as your primary constraints and parameters of planning. In this course, you will learn how you can find the best combination of the above to set realistic roadmaps, release dates, and overall project plans.   

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE:  

  • Introduction and setup – Set up Jira Premium and understand the different versions of Roadmaps available.

  • Sample Plan – Set up a project with sample data, create a plan for it and get our first look at the Advanced Roadmaps interface. This section will also take our first high-level look at the functionality

  • Main Project Plan – We will use a made-up product and create the development plan for it. We will revisit the functionality we already saw in the first section and get more practice with it.

I loved the way the course was presented. Its very practical and gives opportunity to try yourself at the same time and see the effect. I also appreciated the references to the changes Atlassian did since before I was always worried I don't get it, but now I am sure all I need is there I just need to search and now I know to search for what. The tutor is thorough and knowledgeable. The issue lies with Jira Advance/Portfolio, as it is an evolving product. He mentioned multiple times that he has encountered bugs and glitches. I genuinely hope that Atlassian staff will also happen to review this and address these issues.

Not sure how to communicate this other than through the ratings. In lesson 22, in demonstrating how auto-scheduling handles re-ordering, you change the stack rank of SYS-5. Jira will not allow this. I had to play around with it and finally learned that you have to remove groupings in view settings in order to re-rank.

Excellent course. The contents and examples are easy to understand. It covers the basics but also the necessary handy tricks and known bugs.
